Album Civium

Praetorian senatrix M. Hortensia Maior Faustina is currently serving Nova Roma as tribuna plebis, and she is the flamen Carmentalis of Nova Roma. Hortensia Maior became a Nova Roman citizen on a.d. VIII Id. Ian. M. Octavio L. Sulla (II) cos. MMDCCLV a.u.c. and as a senatrix, flamen and magistrate, is one of the most active citizens of the Res Publica Nova Romana. She was a writer and producer of Vox Romana podcast.

Evolution of a famous Nova Roman name

When she applied for citizenship in Nova Roma for the first time, she chose the name Minervina Salicia Carmentis, however, she could not participate at that time in Nova Roma, and after having not participated for a couple of months, she renounced her citizenship in the same year. She became first known publicly for a few days before restoring her Nova Roman citizenship (in May-July it seemed her citizenship would be approved with this name, but finally it wasn't) unofficially as Urania Calidia Antonina, but she officially resumed her citizenship as Pomponia Fabia Vera Attica on a.d. XIII Kal. Iun. K. Buteone T. Labieno cos. MMDCCLVI a.u.c.. As an effort to make her name better fit classical standards, she changed name to Septima Fabia Vera Fausta on a.d. V Kal. Mar. Cn. Salvio Cn. Equitio cos. MMDCCLVII a.u.c., and further classicized it to Sp. Fabia Vera Fausta on prid. Kal. Apr. [1] . Soon she got adopted by M. Arminius Maior Non. Iun. and became Sp. Arminia Fabiana Veriana Fausta (also used as Verana) for a short time[2] , but she immediately adjusted her name as M. Arminia Maior Fabiana to fit Roman conventions for adoptive names on Non. Quin. Cn. Salvio Cn. Equitio cos. MMDCCLVII a.u.c.. After the gens reform, she created the gens Hortensia and finalized her name as M. Hortensia Maior a.d. VIII Kal. Feb. Fr. Apulo C. Laenate cos. MMDCCLVIII a.u.c., working and obtaining fame under this name in the next 6 years. After her resignation from citizenship in P. Memmio K. Buteone (II) cos. MMDCCLXIII a.u.c., she returned to her previous name Septima Fabia Vera Fausta (later Faustina), and used it outside Nova Roma in the next 6 years until her return, when she unified the two sets of names she had been using for the longest time, and her name was settled permanently as M. Hortensia Maior Fabiana Faustina.

This final name of hers represents someone who started her Roman life as member of the gens Fabia, as Septima Fabia Vera Fausta (the parts "Fabiana Faustina" refer to that), and was later part of the stirps of the Arminii Maiores (the part "Maior" refers to that), and finally settled as one of the gens Hortensia.

Self-exile and return

She renounced her citizenship on a.d. VI Id. Sept. P. Memmio K. Buteone (II) cos. MMDCCLXIII a.u.c. as a protest against the abuses of the Sullan-Caesarian faction conducting a so called "civil war" (bullying campaign) in Nova Roma as part of their fight for power. Hortensia's citizenship was reinstated by the tribuni militum consulari potestateto Nova Roma on a.d. VI Id. Sext. Sex. Lucilio C. Claudio P. Annaeo Q. Catulo tr. mil. cos. pot. MMDCCLXX a.u.c..

She was elected praetrix for the second time and thus resumed her senate seat, as well, and the collegium pontificum re-appointed her as flamen Carmentalis.

Hortensia Maior made many contributions to this site.
