Overview

In the current year, Decimus Aurelius Ingeniarius is serving as elected co-consul, international president and head of government of Nova Roma. He is the first such consul to originate from Australia and Oceania in Nova Roman history. He rose to prominence through his service as a senate-appointed governor, regional president, to Provincia Australia, which he has fulfilled since Oct of Sex. Lucilio (II) A. Tullia (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXV a.u.c.. D. Aurelius holds a permanent seat in the Nova Roman senate as an adlected senator and also holds the prestigious title of eques publicus, official public knight of the equestrian order of Nova Roma.

Since first becoming a plebeian citizen in Q. Arrio P. Annaeo cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXII a.u.c., D. Aurelius has developed a passion to expand Nova Roma and for understanding the policies, processes and governance of Nova Roma. Much of his current Nova Roman passions stem from his long-time appointment as scriba to the cuator rei informatiae (Chief Information Officer). Through his work in developing the Forum Domitium (Nova Roma Discord Server), he was appointed as the first Praefectus Vigilum, head of the Cohortes Vigilum (public moderators). D. Aurelius went on to establish the Nova Roman Collegium Iurisprudentium, a state-sponsored institution dedicated to the study of law and training of advocates and jurists, for which he continues to serve as one of the co-magistri.

D. Aurelius is allocated to the equestrian centuries, Equites equo publico supra classem, Centuria IV, and the Papiria (XI) assidui rural voting tribe. As part of gentes Aurelia, D. Aurelius is allocated to the old ceremonial tribe of Tribus Titiensis and the Curia Septima .

Biography

D. Aurelius Ingeniarius, governor, is the magistrate guest of honor at his first live event, at the celebrations of the Ludi Romani in Provincia Australia, 2778. This annual event hosts one of the largest gatherings of Romans in Australia. This year had attendees from Cohors I Praetoria Australis, Legio II Augusta, Legio IX Hispana Australica, and guest legion, Legio VI Victrix.

D. Aurelius Ingeniarius is often regarded as a late arrival to the ancient Roman world. Although he developed a passion for history at an early age, his specific fascination with ancient Rome emerged much later in life.

His journey toward Nova Roma citizenship was shaped by two longstanding interests. From childhood, he was captivated by political science, geopolitics, nation-building, and, in particular, the study of micronations. He devoted countless hours to reading, research, and documentary viewing, and eventually delivered several university presentations based on the creation of his own fictional micronation, complete with an integrated national history.

His interest in ancient Rome arose through another hobby: board gaming. After hosting multiple sessions of The Republic of Rome, he became fascinated by the intricate political mechanisms of the Roman Republic. Initially, his ambition was to design a sequel set during the early Imperial period. To achieve this, he began studying Roman magistracies, institutions, and legislation in detail, examining how the game's mechanics might be adapted to a different era of Roman history.

During this research, he discovered the Nova Roma website in late C. Claudio T. Domitio (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXI a.u.c.. Inspired both by his growing fascination with ancient Rome and by the nation-like structure of Nova Roma itself, he registered as a citizen on a.d. III Non. Iun. ‡ Q. Arrio P. Annaeo cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXII a.u.c. Inducted by A. Tullia Scholastica, he adopted the cognomen Ingeniarius ("engineer"), reflecting his professional occupation.

Early Citizenship and Provincial Service

During his first years as a citizen, D. Aurelius focused on developing Nova Roma within Australia. Motivated by a strong enthusiasm for community-building, he undertook recruitment initiatives that included leaflet distribution campaigns and online advertising. At the time, Nova Roma was emerging from the difficult period commonly referred to as the Third Civil War. Provincial leadership in Australia was limited, and coordinated activity was scarce.

His efforts quickly attracted positive attention. Working closely with the then Proconsul of Provincia Australia, Cn. Cornelius Lentulus Alexander, he was appointed legatus and praefectus provinciae Australiae administrandae in October Q. Arrio P. Annaeo cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXII a.u.c..

Quaestor and Military Service

In Q. Arrio (II) T. Domitio (III) cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIII a.u.c., D. Aurelius entered the cursus honorum as one of eight elected quaestors. During this year he contributed to a Nova Roma currency development working group and began a long record of apparitorial service, receiving appointment as scriba editor situs internetualis publici within the Officium Rei Informaticae. In this role he would go on to make thousands of edits over the next five years, auditing and maintaining the Nova Roma website.

The same year marked the beginning of his military service as a legionary in Legio X Fretensis of Melbourne, Australia. Under his involvement, Legio X became the first allied legion formally partnered with Nova Roma in October Q. Arrio (II) T. Domitio (III) cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIII a.u.c..

Tribune of the Plebs

Elected as one of five Tribuni plebes in Q. Arrio (III) A. Tullia cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIV a.u.c., D. Aurelius became known for his active advocacy of plebeian representation in both the senate and public life. To increase civic engagement, he launched "Tribune Talks", a live discussion program streamed through Nova Roma's Twitch channel, where he provided commentary on contemporary events and public affairs.

The channel gained increasing recognition during the year, leading to his appointment as praefectus editor principalis canalis Twitch Novae Romae. In this capacity, he coordinated the channel's development and organized Roman-themed content creators and streamers.

He also served in several additional apparitorial roles, including accensus consularis, where he assisted a consular legislative revision task force.

During the census of that year, the censors elevated him to the rank of eques equo publico, recognizing him for:

extraordinary honor and virtue in exemplary public service to Nova Roma and Provincia Australia; outstanding reorganization of civic life and activity in the province; and the recruitment and establishment of a new allied legion for Nova Roma.

Praetorship and Senate Appointment

In Sex. Lucilio (II) A. Tullia (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXV a.u.c., D. Aurelius was elected praetor. Serving alongside his co-praetor C. Cornelius Cethegus Barosus, he continued work on the refurbishment of the Tabularium Novae Romae and the expansion of the Codex Iuris. Nearly all the upkeep and accuracy of the tabularium has been solely by the effort of D. Aurelius since Q. Arrio (III) A. Tullia cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIV a.u.c.

He also played a significant diplomatic role during merger discussions involving the dissolving Canadian Roman Republic, serving as secretary to the Nova Roman delegation.

In recognition of his dedication and service, the censors adlected him into the Nova Roma senate, granting him permanent senatorial membership.

Religious Studies and Community Leadership

The year C. Cethego Q. Arrio (IV) cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXVI a.u.c. marked the beginning of his formal studies in the cultus deorum. Dedicated to the goddess Minerva, he was appointed camillus and began studies under the guidance of the Collegium Pontificum.

After relocating within Australia, he joined Legio XII Fulminata and helped guide its recognition as an allied legion of Nova Roma.

Although he held no major elected magistracy during the year, he served as scriba aedilicius princeps, leading the Aedilician office. In this role he promoted innovative public entertainment initiatives, including the interactive Ludi Circenses Supremi Novae Romae he created.

Legal and Administrative Reform

In M. Cotta C. Petronio cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXVII a.u.c., D. Aurelius returned to elected office as one of the decemviri stlitibus iudicandis. Among his most notable accomplishments was helping establish the state-sponsored Collegium Iurisprudentium. As one of its first two magistri, he has continued to serve the institution since its foundation. Having moved residence in Australia once more, he took the opportunity to form a new partnership for Nova Roma with Legio II Augusta, of Canberra.

The same year saw the creation of the Vigiles of Nova Roma. He accepted appointments within several cohorts and became the inaugural Praefectus Vigilum.

He also entered censorial service as scriba censorius, assisting with citizen inductions and administration of the Album Civium.

Second Praetorship

D. Aurelius Ingeniarius, consul and patron, presides over the sacrifices to the gods, with other magistrates, for Parilia and the cleansing of Rome. XI Conventus of Nova Roma, held in Rome during the Parilia at the Natale Di Roma festival in M. Metello D. Aurelio cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIX a.u.c..

In P. Aurelio C. Flavio cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXVIII a.u.c., D. Aurelius served a second term as praetor alongside Ti. Iulius Nerva. During this period he intervened in significant governance issues affecting the Curiae Discord server, deploying the cohors vigilum officialium variorum to restore order and enforce existing regulations.

Seeking to expand opportunities for citizens, he established the Officium Implicationis et Opportunitatis (Office of Employment and Opportunities). He also issued the edictum praetorium de lictoribus curiatis pullariisque, clarifying procedures relating to apparitorial reviews and advancing a controversial interpretation recognizing the Curio Maximus as possessing ius edicendi.

Perhaps his most consequential initiative was the promulgation of the edictum praetoris, establishing standardized court record-keeping procedures, reforms that would continue to influence Nova Roma in subsequent years. He would also continue to forge new Nova Roman partnerships with agreements being reached with two more Australian reenactment groups, Legio IX Hispana Australica, and Legio IV Urbana. As if that wasn't enough, he would also help establish a unit of praetoriani for Nova Roma, based in Adelaide, the Cohors I Praetoria Australis.

Consulship

In M. Metello D. Aurelio cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIX a.u.c., D. Aurelius attained the highest magistracy of the Republic, being elected consul at thirty-six years of age. Prior to the election, the senate granted him a rare age exemption, although the exemption ultimately proved unnecessary, as he comfortably secured election alongside M. Caecilius Metellus Tocaiensis within a limited candidate field.

His consulship was characterized by an active and energetic leadership style. Admirers praised his commitment to legal consistency and institutional reform, while critics viewed his efficient approach as politically aggressive. He championed policies designed to support volunteers and apparitores through tax incentives and administrative reforms, while also seeking to eliminate outdated legislation and improve governmental efficiency.

A major focus of his consulship was increasing accountability within the Republic's bureaucracy. He frequently challenged the senate over its mishandling of various departments and magistrates over procedural shortcomings and administrative burdens placed upon active citizens.

During the same year, he initiated the first constitutional court action under the current legal framework, challenging the exercise of ius edicendi by the office of the curator rei informaticae. Although the court ultimately ruled against his position, he regarded the case as a success for establishing judicial precedent, exercising the constitutional court system, and resolving a significant legislative ambiguity.

He would hold the privilege as the patron for the XI Grand International Conventus of Nova Roma in April, celebrating the Parilia - Dies Natalis Romae festival in Rome, Italy. There, he would be recognized again with an honorary membership with Legio X Fretensis Melitensis, of Malta.

Originally from Australia and now residing in Italy, D. Aurelius holds international certification as an aerospace engineer with a bachelor of electrical engineering and a master of space operations. He is married and the father of two children.
