When a magistracy is vacated before the end of the normal term of office, a replacement is usually elected to serve the remainder of the term. This replacement is called a suffectus (feminine suffecta).

In the ancient Roman republic there was a religious rule forbidding the election of a Censor Suffectus if the office of Censor fell vacant in mid-term; in fact if this happened the remaining Censor was obliged to resign, and no replacement was elected to fill either vacancy. This rule is not observed in Nova Roma.
