Greek philosopher, founder of the school of Epicureanism.

His disciples were Metrodorus, Hemarchus Leontius, Themista, Leontion both women, Mys, his slave and many others. Women and slaves were permitted to attend the Garden (κηπος). Epicurus directed in his will that the 10th of Gamelion, and the 20th of each month be celebrated in the community. The former was his birthday and the latter was in memory of Metrodorus and Epicurus. This was the start of epicurean hero cults.

Later heads of the Epicurean school in Athens were:

Dionysos
Phaedrus 75-70 B.C.E
Patro
Popillius Theotimus
