· Album Decuriarum Apparitoriarum ·

A viator is a messenger or a lesser form of herald. Viatores can be appointed by any magistrate having the ius edicendi or by anyone who has been granted this right by law. The main job of viatores is to attend the duties of a messenger and bailiff, including law enforcement and police work, which in our modern context may include contacting, networking, communication and representation, moderation of public forums, but they are not limited by this law to this kind of work.

Previous practice in Nova Roma

Previously, the viator was exclusively an assistant to the tribuni plebis. Only the members of the plebeian gentility could be appointed as viatores.
