"Far" is a grain used by the Romans from the earliest times to make flour. Though in historical times other grains were more commonly used to make bread and other ordinary foods, far was still often used for ritual purposes such as the making of mola salsa and so-called "spelt cakes".
In English far is called emmer. It is a kind of husked wheat (triticum).
Far is commonly mis-translated as "spelt", which is in reality a different type of grain probably unknown to the ancient Romans.
