The gens Galeria was a very ancient patrician family, which already existed at the time of Romulus, and probably included in the original hundred gentes remembered by the historian Titus Livius. According to Theodor Mommsen the antiquity of this family can be deduced from the fact that it gave its name to one of ancient rural tribes, the homonymous Tribe Galeria.

The origin of Gens Galeria was probably Sabin, apparently due to a family group from the area of Rio Galera, river flowing east of Lake Bracciano, which took its name.

Because historical representatives of Gens Galeria are only of plebeian class, Mommsen believes that the patrician family had extinguished early.
