I have not forgotten about the thumbnails problem. I know what it is and I know how to fix it, but I want to handle that at the next Mediawiki upgrade. Agricola 05:27, 17 September 2008 (CEST)

thanks for headsup on templates. fixed years and will look at dates later today. Agricola 02:16, 11 September 2007 (CEST)

Amici dignitatis article

Thanks for adding that information about the name and the reasoning behind it. Does the article in general strike you as reasonably fair and accurate? If anything I tried to err on the side of being too positive about the group, on the assumption that there are fewer people around to stick up for it than there are who are likely to disparage it; but as for accuracy, I'm limited by not having been around at the time and being reliant on the public archives of the 'main list', which have holes in them at some important moments (in particular about four weeks of messages are missing between the middle of February and the middle of March 2001 - a rather crucial moment, I imagine!).

I thought the article was more than fair; I was quite impressed with it actually. I think it would have taken someone who was not there at the time to really pull it off. Being able to read our "statement" for themselves will really help those who hear the group mentioned and wonder what all the fuss was about.
I am actually rather concerned about the fairness (or NPOV, if you prefer) of anything I might contribute about events during my tenure. I don't rant about these things...but one must understand that it is impossible for me to be truly objective about them. I think this was understood when I was asked to join the Wiki project. Barring complete objectivity, then, I see my role as a clarifier, an explainer, a filler-in of missing pieces. I've been asked to remember things. To the extent possible, I shall do so without intentionally causing divisions in the community. But the events involving me were divisive in themselves. There's no getting around that. I suspect most of my stuff will still need to be reviewed by a neutral party.

Article on the rixa Fimbriana

Sources

An interesting question. I'm almost certain that we have no policy. In my view there is no reason at all why you shouldn't use any material which is in your possession. That view stands on four legs.

First, I hold it as a general principle that a person who doesn't want it known that he has said something shouldn't say it in the first place.

Secondly, to give someone a veto over any attempt to quote words which he himself has said, even many years ago, would be totally inimical to a well-informed public, to a thriving academic life, and to a free press.

Thirdly, secrecy is essentially alien to the political and social culture of the ancient Roman republic, which was characterized by probably the most transparent government the world has ever known.

Fourthly, most modern legal systems of which I am aware, not to mention the ancient Roman legal system, place minimal restrictions on the publication of private correspondence, limited only to cases in which the correspondents have a right to expect privacy and there is a strong public interest in upholding that right, for example in confidential communications between lawyer and client or between doctor and patient.

So I say go for it.

(This does, however, raise an interesting practical point about whether, and to what extent, we should be publishing primary sources on the website itself. So far the tendency has been to link to primary sources off-site, except for the texts of leges and other documents which essentially belong to the people because the people, or the people's officers, made them in the first place. But now we're talking about primary sources which aren't available on other websites, and I can't see any reason why we shouldn't house them on this website, at least as an experiment. We may have to play around with how much quotation of primary sources we have in main articles and how much we keep on separate pages. Come to think of it, photographs are also primary sources of a kind, and we have quite a few of those on here already.)

I've got two for you already: The issue of the Nova Roma Eagle in which Palladius and Sulla give their side of the story...and a rather pointy e-mail I sent to a friend who needed my end explained. Encyclopediae do quote primary sources...but our article could easily become an 'oral history', and I'm not sure if you want that. -- Marius Peregrinus 22:38, 14 August 2007 (CEST)
Quite aside from this particular article, I think past issues of the Eagle would be excellent things to have on the website. As for the sources for this article specifically, it's always easier to work with the concrete than with the hypothetical, so I suggest you go ahead and insert whatever primary sources you think are relevant into the article in whatever way you think best, and then we can play around with it and see what works best. And since it's easier to cut down than to add, I suggest you err on the side of comprehensiveness when deciding what to include.

Absentia

I am going in for surgery in mid-September. My life for the next few weeks, as for the last few months, will consist chiefly of preparation for this event. I will be basically unavailable (for at least a few months) after the end of August.

I think there's enough now in the Fimbria article for the reader to at least have an idea what the issues were and how it could have become so divisive as time progressed. I won't be up to any more major work on it for a while. However, I am gathering the more readily-available of my sources and assembling them on a "toy Wiki" that one of our sodales, P Nonius Severus, put together last year for other purposes. Anyone who wants a sneak-peek can find my raw materials and rough drafts at Ancient Ways: Talk:Fimbria Controversies (draft) and Ancient Ways: More raw material. -- Marius Peregrinus 08:46, 24 August 2007 (CEST)

I'm back! Be a while before I have the stamina to contribute anything substantial; but I can still haunt Special Pages and help with any other little stuff that desperately needs tweaking. >({|:-) -- Marius Peregrinus 01:59, 20 September 2007 (CEST)

Category

I'm working on linking everything to each other. Considering the number of new pages that will likely be needed to hold all my primary refs, should I maybe create a Category for "rixa Fimbriana" material? -- Marius Peregrinus 23:06, 27 August 2007 (CEST)

Everything should be in some cat. If we make a "rixa Fimbriana" cat, where should we put THAT? What I'm driving at is that this material is part of the larger story of Nova Roma, and for that we have Category:Nova_Roma_History. So I will create Category:Rixa Fimbriana (Nova Roma) inside that cat. Keep in mind that SOME of the documents may also belong to other categories. Agricola 03:54, 28 August 2007 (CEST)

Welcome back

Hope all went well, and hope you don't get too much flak for talking sense to Scholastica (although based on my own experience I'm not too optimistic on the latter point)!  :)

- Cordus 13:39, 23 September 2007 (CEST)

It did, it did! As for flak, I wrote the following to a friend a couple of years ago regarding the rixa Fimbriana; Aula's seen it, and it looks like it still applies <g>:

I have been 'outed' by hostiles in a chatroom, harrassed, denounced, had friends turn their backs on me [...], been exiled, had ridiculous conditions for readmission imposed upon me, had Magistrates lining up to paw through my psychiatric records (which I would not provide), been told this-thing and that-thing would get me what I wanted, found nothing was enough, been called an enemy of the Gods, an enemy of the State, a threat to public order and decency, a deliberate obstructionist, been issued a Nota, even had my voicemail message used as evidence against me...

...After all that, carissima, I'm like that guy who survived the plane crash in Fearless. Nothing--and I mean nothing--can touch me.

Fiction

Salve! I made the fiction cat as a place to put fiction written by NR citizens. We get some from the ludi sometimes, and also back issues of the Eagle. It would be nice if you or anyone would add the cat tag to the fiction we already have. About your own works of fiction, well, what should be done? I very much value your contributions on our history, but is fiction another thing? Agricola 00:47, 13 November 2007 (CET)

2 Design issues

Annalsheader replaces a bunch of different templates. What it lacks in design polish it makes up for in technical aspects. Go ahead and use your user space to improve the look, keeping in mind that simple is good and nested tables are bad.

What do you think about the language bar on this sample page: User:M._Lucretius_Agricola/newMainPage2 We are running out of space for the existing one and this one is all text and very simple... and can hold more. Agricola 07:16, 24 February 2008 (CET)
