The "Nova Roman Xenia Project", or whatever name we will give to this later, is a possible undertaking that was born from the experience of many Nova Romans all over the world who welcomed each other as guests in their homes, facilitating traveling and gathering together the real life relationships between Nova Romans, knowing foreign cultures, and building our own New Roman culture.

The project is now in its first phase, there is much to discuss.

We ask only one thing to you:

Please share your ideas HERE in this NR WIKI page:
The Romans had a word for it...
...Hospitium. A traveling citizen (I'll call him Aurelius) might be taken in for the night, fed a decent meal, put up in a guestroom, then given a change of clothing, a fresh horse, and whatever money or other help he needed for the next leg of his trip. Should his host happen to be passing through Aurelius' neck of the woods, Aurelius would do the same things for him, to the extent he was able. Romans who traveled a lot might establish a whole network of people to stay with along their regular routes, with (again) the honor and obligation being mutual.

I doubt many Novaromani will be in a position to lend each other cars, money, legal and social services; but the idea of "If you'll let me stay at your house, you can stay in mine when you're in town" could carry us all a long way. -- Marius Peregrinus 07:50, 15 June 2009 (CEST)
Requirements / rules for the guests
Perhaps it'd be good to add information about "house rules", e.g. are pets / smoking allowed etc. little, but important information? Or should we develop NR house rules for which could be used as standard set of rules? Would they be mandatory for households wishing to take part into the program? --Caius Curius Saturninus 14:14, 29 July 2009 (CEST)
Caius Curius Saturninushttp://www.novaroma.org/nr/Roman_religionRoman religion2008-12-09T08:18:07Z
Caius Curius Saturninus:

The cultus deorum Romanorum ('cults of the Roman gods') is a collective term for the various cults and rituals which constituted the religious life of Rome until the edict of Theodosius in 390 C.E. barring public cult.

Variety
<onlyinclude>It is difficult to talk about Roman religion as a whole, since it is really composed of a large number of separate cults. In this sense there are many Roman religions. A number of specific terms are in use that let us focus on specific aspects of this large whole. Most inclusively, "Roman religion" could mean any religious belief or practice that was held or performed by any person who ever held Roman citizenship. In addition to the traditional state and private cults, this includes such "foreign cults" as Judaism, early Christianity, various Egyptian cults and much more. Also included would be mystery cults that catered to the individual as well as fraternal collegia</onlyinclude>.

"Numa Tradition"
Romans themselves identified certain aspects of their religion, the Numa tradition, as embodying important attitudes and practices which they sometimes turned to in times of stress. Cicero wrote, "I am quite certain that Romulus by instituting auspices, and Numa ritual, laid the foundations of our state, which would never have been able to be so great had not the immortal gods been placated to the utmost extent."

Sacra Publica
Influenced by their Etruscan, Greek and Phonecian neighbors, the Romans developed a complex state religion that emphasised the patron - client relationship between the gods and Romans: the pax deorum (religio) and maintained it by scrupulous observance of rituals. This is the "sacra publica" and it was concerned with the state as a whole, not with regulating the specific beliefs or practices of individual citizens.

Sacra Privata
The term "sacra privata" refers to the relationships, practices and traditions with the gods of individuals and families.

Roles
There were many diverse roles in the Roman tradition. Religious specialists such as sacerdotes, flamines, pontifices and augures advised magistrates on point of ritual and law. The paterfamilias in his home and the magistrates in public normally performed religious rituals.

Beliefs and attitudes
Romans believed the gods were benevolent and respected the social code of the city. They abhorred superstitio which was a belief that the gods were vengeful, jealous and the attendant excessive and slavish behavior to placate them. Varro said, "The religious man reveres the Gods as he would his parents, for they are good, more apt to spare than to punish" and "The Gods do not want sacrifice, their statues even less."

A perfunctory performance of a ritual, without any feeling, was simply not acceptable. Even Cicero, known for his cynical attitudes toward religion, speaks to the requirement of mental attitude in approaching the Gods, and that material gifts are less important .

Cicero also cites the stoic philosopher Q. Lucilius Balbus' opinion about the cultus deorum:
"Quos deos et venerari et colere debemus, cultus autem deorum est optumus idemque castissimus atque sanctissimus plenissimusque pietatis, ut eos semper pura integra incorrupta et mente et voce veneremur. Non enim philosophi solum verum etiam maiores nostri superstitionem a religione separaverunt." ("We must revere and worship the gods, and the best "cultus doerum" is the most sacred, the most holy and the most full of dutifulness, in order to adorn them always with pure, whole and uncorrupted mind and word. Not only the philosophers but also our ancestors divided the superstitio from the religio.")

Roman religion was embedded in Rome's culture. Because of this it is difficult to make a clear distinction between culture and religion.

Feriae

The Oxford Classical Dictionary (ISBN 0198606419) states the following for Feriae, listed under "Festivals, Roman"

The basic notion included not only the hounouring of the gods, but also restrictions on public life: the courts were closed, some agricultural work was restricted, and in some cases holidays given to other workers.

The word feriae applied to specific days, and in its narrowest sense meant simply 'festival' or 'holiday'. Thus, it is seen in general use in the name of a given festival, to simply mean 'festival to'.

Feriae may be divided into two broad classes: feriae publicae and feriae privatae .

Feriae Privatae
Feriae Publicae
Feriae publicae were of three types:

*feriae stativae, which were held on a fixed date, held annually;
*feriae conceptivae, which were held on a date determined by various officials, also held annually; and
*feriae imperativae, which were decreed by the Senate or various other bodies of the State, and held at the decreed date.

Most feriae were also included in the various Fasti, which have been found in homes, inside and outside temples, and in other places in public view.
__TOC__

The calendar used by Romans. Years are counted ab urbe condita (AUC), that is "from the founding of the city".

Originally, the Roman calendar was what is now considered a lunisolar calendar. It was intended to align with both the lunar calendar and the solar calendar, through the means of intercalation.

The Roman calendar operated through the use of three main days (the Kalends, the Nones, and the Ides), in reference to which all dates were given.

The Kalends, the Nones, and the Ides
See Also: Roman dates

The Kalends (Kalendae), which was always the first day of the month, was sacred to Iuno. The first of the month, following the lunar part of the calendar's operation, was the day following the appearance of the New Moon. On this day, the Rex Sacrorum, together with a pontifex minor, offered a sacrifice to Iuno, and announced, by edict, the date of the coming Nones, which fell on the day after the First Quarter.

The Nones (Nonae), falling on either the fifth or seventh day of the month, came the day after the First Quarter of the lunar cycle. On this day, the Regina Sacrorum offered to Iuno at the Regia, after which the feriae for the entire month were announced. Before the Nones of any given month (with the exception of the Poplifugium), no feriae publicae were held.

Lastly, the Ides (Idus) came, either on the thirteenth or fifteenth day of the month, on the day after the full moon. On this day, a sacrifice was given to Iuppiter, for which reason it is commonly noted as Feriae Iovi in the ancient Fasti. From here, the Pontifices determined the number of days remaining until the next New Moon, which would restart the cycle.

The Ides, also, were always dies Nefasti Publici, given their permanent status as Feriae Iovi, without exception.

Special days in the calendar
These are the rules which are pronounced by the pontifices, and breaking them is nefas (though it can sometimes be expiated).

Dies fasti [F]
*ordinary citizens may do anything;
*magistrates may not hold a meeting of the comitia tributa, concilium plebis, or comitia centuriata.
*curule magistrates may exercise their judicial functions.

Dies comitiales [C]
*ordinary citizens may do anything;
*magistrates may hold a meeting of the comitia tributa, concilium plebis, or comitia centuriata.
*curule magistrates may exercise their judicial functions.

Dies nefasti [N]
*ordinary citizens may do anything;
*magistrates may do anything except hold a meeting of the comitia tributa, concilium plebis, or comitia centuriata, or exercise their judicial functions.

Dies nefasti publici [NP]
*ordinary citizens may not commit acts of physical violence, or begin lawsuits, and should try to avoid quarrels (but robust and lively debate was acceptable);
*slaves are allowed the day off work;
*magistrates may do anything except hold a meeting of the comitia tributa, concilium plebis, or comitia centuriata, or exercise their judicial functions;
*ordinary citizens may not do any physical labour except what is urgently necessary and can't be postponed;
*the flamines and the rex sacrorum may not see anyone doing any physical labour, and may fine anyone they see doing physical labour.

Dies endotercisi [EN]
(also called dies intercisi)
*same as dies nefasti in the morning;
*same as dies fasti in the afternoon;
*same as dies nefasti in the evening.

Dies fasti publici or principio [FP]
There are two interpretations of this designation presented by scholars. They are:
*as dies fasti principio:
**same as dies fasti in the morning;
**same as dies nefasti in the afternoon and evening.
*as dies fasti publici:
**same as dies nefasti publici.

Quando Rex Comitiavit fas [QRCF]
*same as dies nefasti until the rex sacrorum appears in the comitia;
*same as dies fasti after that.

Quando Stercus Delatum fas [QSDF]
*same as dies nefasti until the Temple of Vesta has been cleaned;
*same as dies fasti after that.

Dies atri and dies religiosi (or vitiosi)
Dies atri and dies religiosi are less formal but widely observed.

Dies atri: unlucky days;

*try to avoid making journeys, starting new projects, or doing anything risky;
*certain gods, including Iuppiter and Ianus, may not be named.
*these days are ill-omened to begin any new project, and any new project would necessarily begin by performing a rite calling for the assistance of the gods. Such religious rites, beginning something new, are not to be performed.
*Normal work would still be performed on dies atri, and as part of performing any work one performs rites for the patron deities, geni locii, and other appropriate deities. Naturally enough, the daily routine is also performed before the lararium.

Dies religiosi (vitiosi): like dies atri, but less bad:
*no private religious rites may be performed, but public rites may, subject to the same exclusions as for dies atri;
*try to avoid making journeys, starting new projects, or doing anything risky.

Nundinae and nundinal letters
Nundinae were originally market-days, held every eighth day, on which Romans came into the city to trade and do business. On Roman calendars the days were given nundinal letters (A to H) to help people see when the next market-day would be. The markets were held on a different day each year.
As it is well known that the calendar will, from year to year, stay fairly regular, the Pontiffs of Nova Roma have decided that it would be more convenient and expedient to declare a perpetual calendar. In observance of the Lex Hortensia of CDLXVII, the Pontifices will declare, each year, the day on which the nundinae shall fall for the following year.
The aforementioned perpetual calendar shall be as follows:
Lucius Vitellius Triarius

Along the southern summit of the Mons Capitolinus

lay the cliff of death so steep, first used by Tatius, called Titus.

The rupes Tarpeia,

the Tarpeian Rock,

great fear of it inside us.

The Sabines came with bands of gold,

Fine bracelets on each arm,

And Spurius did debate with them,

A trade for daughter’s charm.

The governor of the citadel opened the gates,

Despite the warnings by his peers.

Betraying the Romans, determining their fates,

The great mistake of all his years.

To please his daughter of great charm,

He gave up the Roman lands.

He thought not of her life and harm,

At the will of Sabine hands.

Crushed to death with Sabine shield

And thrown down from the rock

The Vestal Virgin, Tarpeia, did yield

After her father undid the lock.

A Sabine trick, a promise not kept,

Their familia’s fate was sealed,

Her father cursed and knelt and wept,

but alas he never healed.

In the year five hundred, Superbus

was the seventh legendary King.

He leveled the top of the Tarpeian Rock,

Removing the shrines of the Sabine fabrum ring.

Upon this rock, he built anew,

The Temple of Iuppiter Capitolinus.

On the intermontium, he did renew

The grandeur of Mons Capitolinus.

Saturn’s Temple was built with no alarm,

On this rock from treasures that were won.

The Roman Treasury, safe from harm,

Till Caesar crossed the Rubicon.

No Pleb would dare to take from there

And be seen by Saturn’s watchful eye.

If Plebs did attempt to take his fare,

They would surely expect to die.

The Plebs, they knew, the Tribunes’ way,

Singing each day their same old riff,

“Uphold the law from day to day,

Or be flung off top the cliff.”

The Tribunes of the Plebs they did,

This Roman rock use very well.

They flung off the traitors, murderers and did rid

The crazed and lame, as well.

From Tarentum to Manlius,

Rebellion and sedition,

Each Pleb knew the rock on Mons Capitolinus

Was unhealthy for their life’s future condition.

Plebs, as you pass this rock each day,

Stay on the straight and narrow,

One wrong, not right, and they say nay,

And you’ll be crushed bones and marrow.

Along the southern summit of the Mons Capitolinus

lay the cliff of death so steep, first used by Tatius, called Titus.
