A scriba (plural scribae) is an appointed clerk or assistant of a magistrate. A scriba is an apparitor.

The current constitution permits holders of the office of Censor, Praetor, Aedilis Curulis, Aedilis Plebis to appoint scribae. An assistant to a Consul is called an accensus. Any citizen can be appointed scriba, because it is not a requirement for an apparitor to be assiduus, but it is up the magistrate to decide his own policy in appointing his apparitores.

The Lex Apula de magistro araneario permits holders of the office of magister aranearius to appoint assistants, also sometimes termed scribae, although the term Wikimagister is also in use.

Holders of the office of Tribunus Plebis cannot appoint scribae as such, but can appoint messengers called viatores.
