Social structure of Nova Roma

An assiduus (assidua, female, assidui, plural), is a taxpayer citizen of Nova Roma.

An assiduus citizen is a member of the social elite of Nova Roma, a privilege open to all citizens who are dedicated enough to pay the small amount of "tax" (membership fee) of Nova Roma. Assiduus citizens are distributed into the 15 rural tribes (against the 4 urban tribes of the capite census citizens) and into the 22 centuries of the 5 classes (against the 1 single century of the capite censi). These instructions ensure that assidui have an overwhelming voting power in all comitia, but specially in the comitia centuriata.

Previous use of this term in Nova Roma

Between L. Sulla (III) cos. sine collega MMDCCLXVI a.u.c.-Cn. Lentulo Alexandro T. Domitio cos. MMDCCLXIX a.u.c., only those taxpayers counted as assidui who had at least 16 or 17 census points. This meant that there were three categories:

  • citizens who pay taxes and have more than 16 census points: these are termed assidui,
  • citizens who pay taxes but don't have more than 16 census points: these are termed taxpayer capite censi
  • citizens who don't pay taxes: these are termed non-taxpayer capite censi
