"Taxes" in Nova Roma (voluntary membership fee) are not compulsory. However, those paying the taxes receive various privileges, including the right to be elected or appointed into offices and priesthoods, receive enhanced voting rights, and gain access to services from Nova Roma that are not offered to non-paying members. These "taxes" are mandatory for those who are magistrates, officers, priests, senators and equestrians of Nova Roma, or who intend to run for these offices later this year, at the elections held in November.

Nova Roma is asking for your voluntary donation in order to maintain our ever-growing international society and community, our websites, forums and social media platforms, to sponsor and support our events, ceremonies and affiliated reenactment groups, to finance our projects, to support worthy initiatives worldwide.

The treasury of Nova Roma where you send this money is administered by P. Porcius Licinus (Mr Jeff Larson), the curator aerarii (CFO) of Nova Roma. Supported by the two annual elected quaestores aerarii, Tita Popillia Laenas (Dorottya Virág Mák) and Aulus Vitellius Celsus (Vladimir Popov).

Nova Roma optional taxes are very low.

The taxes are made up of two components; the "tributum capitis" ($9 USD) and the "tributum militare" ($6 USD). For the standard citizen this equates to a $15 USD payment in order to maintain your rank and status. You are invited to donate any higher amount over this minimum, as much as you intend to give to our cause ($50 USD per citizen would be ideal). At certain higher donation thresholds, you will gain prestige and further Roman benefits as a treasury tribune equestrian or an eques equo privato. You can learn about the details below.

The deadline to donate your Nova Roman taxes is prid. Kal. Quin. ‡ (30 June) each year. The rates specified only apply until 1 November. After this 1 November deadline, this discount rate will no longer be in force, which means that after July 1, the required minimum for a valid tax payment will then be $18 USD. This raised fee doesn't apply for citizens who became members of Nova Roma after 1 November.

Tax rates are determined by the Senate of Nova Roma. You can read more information about the senatus consultum on taxes through the Senatus consultum de tributis perpetuis.

Simple guide

BASIX TAX:

Pay the basic tax and become a simple assiduus citizen:

• Pay $15 USD (or just $9 USD of you are a member of a partner legion of Nova Roma) via PayPal to novaromatreasury@gmail.com. In the notes section, mention the Roman name(s) of those for whom you are paying for. Learn about the reduced fees below.
• Send an email to the treasury quaestors at the same address how much and for whom you have paid.

EQUESTRIAN TAX:

Pay the equestrian tax and become a noble citizen, a private knight, eques equo publico:

• Pay 135 USD (or just $81 USD of you are a member of a partner legion of Nova Roma) via PayPal to novaromatreasury@gmail.com. In the notes section, mention the Roman names of those for whom you pay. Learn about reduced fees below.
• Send an email to the treasury quaestors at the same address and request the knighthood. Also mention how much and for whom you paid.

TREASURY TRIBUNE TAX:

Pay the treasury tribune tax and become a preliminary equestrian, a treasury tribune:

• Pay $45 USD (or just $27 USD of you are a member of a partner legion of Nova Roma) via PayPal to novaromatreasury@gmail.com. In the notes section, mention the Roman name(s) of those for whom you pay. Learn about reduced fees below.
• Send an email to the treasury quaestors at the same address and request the tribunus aerarius equestris status. Also mention how much and for whom you paid.

BASIC TAX

FOR CITIZENS NOT SERVING IN NOVA ROMAN LEGIONS

If you do NOT hold a membership in a recognized Nova Roman legionary reenactment group, as a civilian or military reenactor, then the required tax includes both the tributum capitis ($9 USD) and the tributum militare ($5 USD) for a total of $15 USD.

Send your tax contributions or higher donations of minimum 15 USD via PayPal to the managing collectors (quaestores), at the following PayPal address:

VERY IMPORTANT: When you have completed the PayPal transfer, please send a message to the quaestores, at the same email address, and specify the amount you donated, including your Roman name. They will update your assiduus (taxpayer) status as a "good standing citizen" at the end of the tax-collecting season.

FOR MEMBERS OF NOVA ROMAN LEGIONS

If you DO hold a membership in a recognized Nova Roman legionary reenactment group, as a civilian or military reenactor, then the required tax only requires the tributum capitis ($9 USD). To be eligable for this tax option, you myst have provided evidence of your membership with a Nova Roman legionary reenactment group. If your reenactment is not already registered on your Album Civium record, be sure to send an evidence about your legion membership to the quaestors at: novaromatreasury@gmail.com

Send your tax contributions or higher donations of minimum 9 USD via PayPal to the managing collectors (quaestores), at the following PayPal address:

VERY IMPORTANT: When you have completed the PayPal transfer, please send a message to the quaestores, at the same email address, and specify the amount you donated, including your Roman name. They will update your assiduus (taxpayer) status as a "good standing citizen" at the end of the tax-collecting season.

You may send just the minimum 9 USD or 15 USD respectively, but ideally -- if you can allow it -- you should send more because our website is under a complete reorganization and the current costs are high (may reach event 20.000 USD), and we have only a few donors. An ideal donation would be about 50 dollars. If you send 20, 30, 80 or more, all will be great help to Nova Roma. Only by your donations can we fully enhance our community.

If you fail to submit your taxes, you will lose your offices or ranks (if you have any), as per the law, because taxpayer status is required for holding office.

LATE PAYMENT:
The deadline is prid. Kal. Quin. ‡ (30 June) each year, after that the minimum amount will rise to 18 USD. Late tax donations can only be made up to the end of the prid. Kal. Ian. ‡ (31 December), Rome time. Any tax donations made after this time are assumed to be for the new tax period. There is no late fee for citizens electing to pay the rates of a tribunus aerarius equestris, or eques equo privato after prid. Kal. Quin. ‡ (30 Jun). Citizens who join after the prid. Kal. Quin. ‡ (30 June) in any given year who wish to pay the voluntary tax donation, for any current tax period, may do so without attracting the late fee.

CONSEQUENCES OF NON-PAYMENT:
On Kal. Nov. ‡ each year, citizens who have not paid taxes will be classified as capite censi and will automatically lose any state positions, offices and titles they hold that require assiduus status, including senatorial or equestrian status. The lost state positions, offices and titles will be automatically restored, with the exception of elected magistracies, governorships and appointed state commissioner positions, when the late payment is made (without any time break noted in the records) but only until the prid. Kal. Ian. ‡ (31 December) within the specific tax period. Congruent with other Nova Roman law, only those citizens who have already paid the tax donation for the current tax period are allowed to nominate as a candidate in an election for public office, be appointed to any public office and be appointed to any priesthood.

If provisioned under Nova Roman law, citizens who previously held an assiduus status, who are reclassified as capite censi at any time, may be subject to Census Point penalties applicable to a negligence in tax payment.

BECOME AN EQUESTRIAN

If you decide to donate a larger amount to Nova Roma which is at least 135 USD or more (81 USD if you are a Latinist or a reenactor), you receive the honor of being enrolled, with full membership into the Equestrian Order of Nova Roma, and you become an eques equo privato ("knight with private horse") or private equestrian, in brief. These amounts include by default the 6 USD tributum militare so you don't have to add that.

By becoming a private equestrian you receive the following extra rights, as long as you maintain your annual equestrian tax status:

• to use the title "eques", or "eques Novus Romanus" (Nova Roman Knight or Equestrian);
• to have 400 extra Census Points for as long as you maintain your yearly status;
• to obtain membership automatically in the First Class which gives you the highest influence in Nova Roman elections;
• to have the label "member of the Equestrian Order" in your citizen ID profile
• to wear a tunica angusticlavia (a tunic decorated with a narrow purple stripe);
• to wear the equestrian golden ring;
• to extend this right to your direct descendants and to your spouse (as long as you remain an equestrian);
• to have distinguished seats and to take precedence over regular citizens at public events;

All you have to do is to send at least 135 USD or more instead of the basic donation for your Nova Roman taxes, and you become a distinguished member of the Nova Roman aristocracy, the Equestrian Order. Send your equestrian donation to this PayPal address before 30 June:

REDUCED FEE: If you are a Roman reenactor or a Latinist, you can receive a significant discount, if requested, and you can receive the dignity of a eques equo provato for a donation of at least 81 USD. You will have to prove with photographic evidence (which we might post on our website) that you are a Roman reenactor, or a with a certificate, that you are a Latinist, in order to receive the discount. BEFORE YOU WOULD DONATE, contact the quaestor and request your discount, and we will discuss the sending of your evidences.

VERY IMPORTANT: When you have sent the donation, please send a message to the quaestor Popillia immediately and specify the amount you donated. Only by doing so can you ensure your status will be recorded and registered. Send an email to the same address as given above with your Roman name and specify how much you donated so it can be matched to record.

If you don't inform the quaestor about your tax payment donation, you may not receive assiduus status (taxpayer status), and you will not receive the equestrian dignity.

There is no late fee for citizens electing to pay the rates of a tribunus aerarius equestris, or eques equo privato after prid. Kal. Quin. ‡ (30 Jun).

BECOME A TREASURY TRIBUNE OR PRELIMINARY EQUESTRIAN

If you would like to help Nova Roma with a higher donation, but the amount required for the equestrian status is too high for you, or if you just want to wear lawfully, as an authentic Nova Roman, the narrow purple stripe on your tunica, there is a less expensive way to do that! If you donate at least 45 USD or more (27 USD if you are a Latinist or a reenactor), you receive the title "tribunus aerarius equestris", which doesn't give you full membership in the Equestrian Order of Nova Roma, but you will be entitled to wear the equestrian narrow purple stripes. These amounts include by default the 6 USD tributum militare so you don't have to add that.

By becoming a private equestrian, tribunus aerarius equestris, you receive the following extra rights:

• to use the title "tribunus aerarius equestris" (treasury tribune equestrian)
• to have 25 extra Census Points for as long as you maintain your yearly status
• to obtain membership automatically in a one degree higher class than your current class is, which means higher influence in Nova Roman elections
• to wear a tunica angusticlavia (a tunic decorated with a narrow purple stripe)

All you have to do is that WHEN YOU PAY YOUR DONATION FOR TAXES, instead of the basic tax, you PAY at least 45 USD (27 if you are a Latinist or a reenactor) or more. Pay your taxes with this extra amount of donation, and you become a preliminary member of Equestrian Order. Send your equestrian donation to this PayPal address before 30 June:
