The payment is entirely voluntary. Those who do choose to pay are called "assidui" and have all the rights and priviliges of full membership, including the ability run for elected office, to hold appointed offices, and to have a full-strength vote. Those who choose not to pay cannot hold office and have much weaker voting power; see the Lex for full details.
Payment is due by April 30th. After that, payment of a late fee of 50% will be required.
The amount varies by country, and is proportional to the per-capita GDP of that country. A partial list is shown here for the countries with the largest numbers of citizens:

The COMPLETE LIST is included in the
Consul's Edict.
Citizens under eighteen years of age are exempt.
Payment may be made by any of the following methods:
To avoid the fees associated with international transfers, some provincial governors are accepting payments and forwarding them to the central treasury. If you are outside the United States and Canada, please contact your propraetor to determine whether this will be occurring in your country. The propraetores' contact information can be found here.

Transfer funds electronically through the Internet using PayPal.com. This free service, provided by a company independent of Nova Roma, allows anyone with an email account and a credit card to send or receive money instantly. Even if you've never used PayPal before, the signup process takes only a few minutes. Be sure to put your Roman Name in the "Special Instructions" field so that you can receive proper credit for having paid! If you are paying for someone else, list their name instead; if you are paying for multiple citizens at the same time, list all their names. |
If you'd like to make payments on behalf of another citizen in addition to your own, just add $18 for each additional citizen, and place their names in the "Special Instructions" field in addition to your own.
If you have any questions please contact the Consuls' Quaestores at payments@novaroma.org
We strongly prefer that you use the PayPal.com service. It is secure, convenient, quick, handles international currency conversions automatically, and can be tracked using tools on their site to ensure that no payment is lost.
However, if you cannot use PayPal, you can pay through the mail. Citizens residing in the United States can pay by cash, check, or money order. Citizens in other countries must obtain a money order denominated in US dollars, which can be obtained from a local bank.

Be sure to include your Roman Name on your check, money order, or cover letter, so that we will know who to credit the payment to. Payments must be postmarked by April 30th.

You will receive email confirmation when your payment is processed. To check that your citizen status has been updated, go to your personal Album Civium page, and look for a note that reads "Assidui 2003". If it instead reads "Assidui 2002" or "Capite Censi", that means your status has not yet been updated. If you don't see Assidui 2003 within a few days, contact the Quaestores.
