Salve Tiberi,

The festival of Jupiter Invictus which started yesterday; the lesser
Quinquatrus that is taking place from June 13 - 15, a festival of
guild flute players who were important in religious ceremonies.

If I have offended you and anybody else my apologies

I thought the clue "Regal " might have helped the Citizens of the Nova Roma Republic to remember that on June 14, 510 BCE Rome became a Republic.

Again my apologies for wasting your time.

Salve G. Iulius Scaurus

I do not dispute that Roman history dates are problematic at best but if we know April 21 or at least think we do then we should know June 14, 510 as well. Talk about a mountain and a mole hill, the question was posted for fun nothing more or less.

Salvete Milites
Drill and weapons training yesterday was great, we are well on our way to becoming a very cohesive group. Currently we have 6 members that are at every Muster and drill which is great to see. I cannot wait till the day we have at least a Maniple to field so we need to get EVERYONE out and kitted out. We had numerous people stopping and watching and asking questions. Staring July 2nd (Wednesday Night) we will be having drill and weapons training every Wednesday in the Field of Mars located by Plautius beginning at 6 pm till about 9 pm. We have a very busy summer season ahead of us.Wednesday morning at the U of C for our TV interview on Global to be aired at 7:15 am to promote the Campus Fair. This Saturday we are at the U of C doing 2 shows the first is for the Alumni the second show is for the Public which I hear may well be televised. July 18, 2003 we have the Italy opening at the Museum of Regiments. August 15-17 we are at the Westin Hotel Down Town for Conversion again 2 shows there but not sure what we can do inside as yet but will come up with something.

This is just the starting people, time to start making the extra effort to show for practices which even Venator our newest Member is pumped about. It is a minimal investment for your Tiro kit to show to practices which is just your Tunica, Caligae, Cingulum. The Legion supplies the Pila and practice Scuta. As I stated this is a weekly thing starting July 2nd. Only way this will be cancelled is if we are doing an event that same morning.

Practices mainly consist of Drill, formations, sword and shield training, pila tossing, We will soon be also looking at getting everyone swimming and weight training as well as other cardio exercises as this is all part of training as every Legionnaire did know how to swim and was extremely fit. Lets get happening as I know Ambrose works at Worlds Gym and can get us a group rate for membership. Its high time we use the resources we have at hand and become the Best Legion in the World.

On other news I have also just completed my First Aid course so we now have that at each event for the off chances of emergencies. I am also starting plans for our next feast in October for the 18th (A Saturday) as we have a Chef willing to cook for us because he is wanting to try his hand at something new and challenging. He also works with Culpatus which is where I will be getting the food supplies at a great rate. I am not sure about the rest of you but I am Pumped to a new altered high as to how far our Legion is heading at so new a stage. We have 2 great shows that should draw many new recruits if we are upto speed and willing to go that extra mile. Would it not be nice to head to California next April where Legion IX is hosting a large event for all North American Legion and we field 20-40 Legionnaires ourselves? I know he has 60 confirmed now OH THE GLORY!!!!!!!!!

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Ludi Albi!
From: "M. Octavius Solaris" <scorpioinvictus@hotmail.com>
Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2003 20:57:05 +0200
Salvete Romani,

Here is the exclusive report from the indoors conducted Ludi Albi. Our
finest charioteers and chariots gathered at factio Albata's private racing
facilities. These were generously paid for by an anonymous censor. Factio
Albata is, in spite of its recent successes, a small factio, but has proven
that bigger isn't always better. In order to ensure that Albata will keep
bringing top level entertainment, the best racing and the most exciting
strategies we decided to hold our internal ludi to see what we could learn
from each other.

So. From the misty valleys of the North, where our own replica of the circus
is located, come the reports of the Ludi Albi!

Here are the contestants:

Impactus Infrenatus
Charioteer: Concordius
Sponsor: Gn. Octavius Noricus

Vita Brevis
Charioteer: Admiratius Magnus
Sponsor: Gn. Equitius Marinus

Fulmen Draconis
Charioteer: Damnator
Sponsor: M. Octavius Solaris

Imperator Invictus
Charioteer: Draco Borealis
Sponsor: G. Vipsanius Agrippia

Alea Iacta Est
Charioteer: Aurelius
Sponsor: M. Tullius Philipicae

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The five players don't waste their time with formalities, and off they go
under cloudy skies in a moody atmosphere. Of the five, Concordius and
Damnator are the veterans, having competed in a lot of races. However
Damnator never managed to win one and this has, to an extent, frustrated
him. Especially now that Concordius did grasp a victory some time ago! The
three others are rising stars, especially Draco Borealis, under the
patronage of G. Vipsanius. Of course all sponsors are also there, cheering
on their drivers! The masters are looking!
Vita Brevis takes a head start and rockets past the others, taking quite a
risk when passing the spina so closely. You'd think that Admiratius Magnus
wants to impress the others. At first they don't really seem to react but
nonetheless the other four are now steadily gaining speed as Magnus comes
out of the curve and the others enter it. A fierce lashing of whips is
heard, and rough cries are filling the morning air. And there it happens:
Concordius begins singling out Alea Iacta Est and its driver Aurelius,
slowly but certainly trying to drive him against the walls! Damnator,
Concordius' partner in crime, grins fiendishly as he passes the duo and
begins to chase Draco Borealis, who is second, and Admiratius Magnus who is
still way ahead of the others.
Admiratius Magnus fails to increase the distance between him and the others.
In the tribunes Marinus, his sponsor, is going out of his mind, but his
accusations that the Vita Brevis has been sabotaged by the other drivers is
nonsense. The others are simply accelerating! In a frantic pace Draco
Borealis and Damnator are closing in on their colleague. Friendship among
the Albi here is a rare thing in this moment. Meanwhile Aurelius has freed
himself from Concordius' grasp but still seems to drive shakily. A
frustrated Concordius is left behind.
There they go, in the bend. The distance closes and keeps closing, until
finally Draco Borealis and his Imperator Invictus reach the Vita Brevis.
Damnator gives it one more try and boosts his span into a higher
acceleration but must give up the chase as they enter the spina curve.
Magnus proves his skill once again by rounding the spina perfectly! However,
the Imperator Invictus is no less capable of doing this and has soon caught
up with him again on the next straight lane. At the same time, the Alea
Iacta Est has found its stability again and is now trying to sneak up on
Damnator's Fulmen Draconis. Latter has noticed this manoeuvre and is
continuously slowing down and speeding up again, moving left and right, to
prevent Aurelius from passing.
However, in all this trickery Damnator only manages to slow down himself and
is forced to let Aurelius pass on the straight lanes. Once again he sees
three chariots in front of him and only one, the equally frustrated
Concordius, following behind. The Alea Iacta Est really seems to have
regained strength and manages to pass the Imperator Invictus... in the
curve! Wow. That's racing skills. Concordius and his Impactus Infrenatus are
catching up with Damnator, who seems to be experiencing problems with his
span. What's going on there?
While the leading three chariots are clearly distancing themselves from the
two veterans - already their sponsors are beginning to doubt their
abilities - Concordius and Damnator get into an ugly dogfight, bumping into
each other and viciously lashing their whips. However it's Damnator who
delivers the fatal blow. A well-placed push against the sides of the
Impactus Infrenatus breaks its frame at its weakest point, and a second blow
mercilessly drives it against the walls. Concordius leaves a trail of
splinters and his span continues to drag around the confused and angry racer
for half a round.
However, all this bravado and violence do not help Damnator. The other three
are too far ahead now.
And sure it's going to be exciting! Admiratius Magnus still leads but for
how long? He can feel the others' breath in his neck. And it's not a
comfortable feeling. And there they go, coming down the last straight line!
Vita Brevis falls back, passed by Alea Iacta Est. Draco Borealis now also
passes Magnus and his Vita Brevis. Still a few metres to go. Will Magnus
make a comeback? Can he? He gives it a last go. Passes Draco. But is
immediately passed by Draco again. It seems Aurelius will win! Or. No. Draco
takes advantage of a sudden direction shift of the Alea Iacta Est and passes
it! There he goes! He's the winner!!!
And these are the full results of the race:
5. Accident!!
4. Damnator - Fulmen Draconis
3. Admiratius Magnus - Vita Brevis
2. Aurelius - Alea Iacta Est
1. DRACO BOREALIS - IMPERATOR INVICTUS
Congratulations to the new Albata champion! This one clearly has the Force
:).
Congratulations, too, to his sponsor, Gaius Vipsanius Agrippa.
Valete bene,
M. Octavius Solaris
A. Apollonius Cordus to all citizens and peregrines,
greetings.
I've just finished reading and taking notes from (it's
a library book, you see) 'Latin Forms of Address' by
Eleanor Dickey (Oxford University Press, 2002).
It's a fairly comprehensive book on how Romans
addressed one another in different situations and
different relationships. The methods by which we
address one another here on the main list are quite
varied, and some more historical than others, so I
thought some of you might be interested to know how it
was done in the old days.
If anyone is interested, please contact me directly
and I'll type up my notes for you.
Consider this my small attempt to compete with the
many citizens who post useful information to this list
with astounding frequency - is it becoming a new kind
of public benefaction? Our electronic way of building
aqueducts, perhaps... :)
I've never owned a Mac, so I don't even know if they
are themeable. (I'm sure the Mac owners will cure my
to purchase a Mac or a bunch of software to do a Mac
version I'll do one. I'm also planning on a KDE
