Salvete Omnes,
I live in America Austroccidentalis in the Salt Lake City area in the
state of Utah where there are extremely few if any active Nova Roma
citizens. I have been trying for months now to get in physical
contact with other citizens but to no avail. I even went on a
rigorous recruitment campaign complete with flyers and everything on
my university campus and in the surrounding city neighborhoods, but
still to no avail. And I don't have the means to travel anywhere, so
I've never even met my own adopted family. Now I'm not writing to
complain and I don't want to waste precious NR mailinglist space, but
I need some advice. What can I do to create a Roman community here?
This is directed primerily to those who played a role in setting up
their own local communities or even in Nova Roma herself. I just
need some ideas because I would really like to be an active citizen
outside of a computer context so I can help give Nova Roma a more
real-world foundation.

Thank you for your time and concideration,

Sincerely,
Laecus Galerius Felix

Salve,

Believe me I know how you feel as I am sure many other citizens of Nova
Roma do as well. My best advice to you, as some one who has been working
hard to get his local citizens active and involved for the last 2 years
with mixed results, is to have lots of patience. It may be a cliché but
Rome was not built in a day. Hang in there, keep trying, stay in touch
with your follow civies via e-mail and don’t lose heart. Your efforts
will pay off eventually, the Gods willing!

Subject: [Nova-Roma] the gens Falco
From: "biojournalism" <biojournalism@hotmail.com>
Date: Wed, 05 Mar 2003 05:35:33 -0000
Can anyone tell me whether there was an ancient Roman gens named
Falco? This is my paternal grandmother's last name. I thought it
came from Naples and was probably a farmer's name meaning falconer
or falcon breeder, etc. Is it also the name of a Latin family from
ancient Rome? Just curious. I always thought Falco was short for
Falcone. Wondering as I look through the genealogy records. I'm sure
there are cities because of the number of Di Falco names. Anyone
familiar with whether most ancient Romans after the 5th century took
their family names from famous figures of the ancient past? Thanks.

Salve Laecus Galerius Felix,

I know how you feel. My first bimonthly Nova Roma meeting was lacking any
Nova Roman besides myself and my partner. Luckily,2 of his friends came
along to hang out and people from my pagan group came too so we had a total
of 8 people. The thing that made me feel bad was that after I emailed every
NR citizen in Gallia only 3 citizens bothered to answer (but those 3 were
very supportive-- they just lived too far away to come).

But ok I think what you are doing with the flyers is a good idea. I'm going
to do that too. Another idea is to put the flyers in the local libraries as
well. And like Hadrianus said 'keep trying' and I'll do the same.

Vale,
Diana Moravia

Flavi Galeri to his cousin Laeci Galeri. Salve.

It has been my experience that the best place to look for potential Nova Romans are in existing groups. You should go to the Roman military reenactment sites and see if any members are in your area. The same goes for contacting the local SCA, especially the SCA/Dagohir Romans, because many of the medievalists would prefer to be Romans. You might also go to the Archaeological Institute of America website and see if any teachers or professors in your area specialize in Graeco-Roman studies. They might provide you with the opportunity to present a brief presentation on NR at one of the local lectures that AIA sponsors at universities and colleges. One last possibility is to access your local Public Television (which runs their NOVA shows on building a Roman bath or aqueduct occasionally) or NPR station (see about presenting some Roman music) to see about them scheduling some programs about Roman history and doing an interview about NR on the air.
Also, you should enlist the assistance of the provincial governor's office. Perhaps they have a proposal for a colonia or provincial meeting but do not have sufficient volunteers yet or are waiting for the taxes to be distributed to the provincial fund. May the gods grand you good forture in your endeavors. Vale.

Not bas but the declensions are wrong.
Triumphans : more or less OK, but usually is an adjective which means
belonging to o Triumph. Perhaps Trimphator would perhaps be better
in both cases usually it is followed by 'de' or 'ex': Over, which I
think is not exactly your intend or is it?
So in + ablative seems correct

But New York Law should be rewritten as Law of New York meaning a
genitive for Nova York.
And York has a latine name which could be used: Eboracum

Finally Law is usually lex, legis but norma (rule/norm) could be used,
but the Law is anyway the collective of a lot laws and should be
translated in the plural. For norma you can keep the singular:
the rule of New York

SO your version with correct declension would be:
Triumphans in Novae York norma (or normis)

and probably it would be better:
Triumphator in Novi Eboraci legibus

Its great to hear that there are citizens out there really trying to grow
our organization. You are truly kalos kai agathos. I've thought about the
same question myself, and here is the plan I've developed. First, I would
need someone not related to me in my city who is also a citizen of NR. Then,
get your togae on and go give presentations to any group that will listen to
you about NR. You've got to get one other person to do it with you, because
on your own I think you'd be considered a nut. If you can convince just one
other person to do it with you, then it adds credibility to your effort.
Believe me, you will get people to join. I've always wanted to go to a Ren
Fest and recruit for NR, but I don't know what the SCA would think.

I'm glad you took no offence. The intent of my comment
was not even to suggest, as you read it, that there
was an 'appearance that Senatores are simply
windbags', but merely that one might imagine them
making formal speeches. In either case, no harm done!

Well, it is debatable, but it's hard to think what
else to call it - 'American' would cover variants of
English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and any native
languages which are still spoken... perhaps
'U.S.A.ish'... :)

Whatever it's called, it's rapidly replacing the
Queen's English as the native language of the U.K.
anyway, so it may soon be perfectly accurate to call
it English. Ah well.

Salvete Omnes!!

Air is salty, wind blows the sails of the armed ships. The Captains stared at the horizon waiting for the crucial meeting. M. Atilius Regulus and Manlius Vulsus knows that Sicily and the war against Carthage lays upon their shoulders. More than 300 Thrirremes awaits for their command. The sailors and soldiers can see the lights of Agrigentus, and even hear the gladius hitting the shields. They do the same and surrounded by this warrior drum set the will for the upcoming battle...

Citizens of Nova Roma, this is the first time you can join one of the hugest and most fantastic spectacles of Ancient Rome. The First Naumachiae is in progress, and from now in advance you can join it. How? Quite easily. :-)

The Naumachiae is a Spectacle of ships and boats fighting in a flooded Amphitheater or an artificial lake. Navalis Proelii Spectaculum. Now we are going to call all the Citizens to join one of the 2 teams: Be a Roman and command your own ship against the Carthagineians or choose a Punic ship against the rising power of Rome. We are aprox. in the year 500 A.U.C, and the Cape Ecnomus, Sicily, is a boiling point for the 330 ships of the Roman Consuls and the 350 ships commanded by Amilcar.

Who will win?

Visit now the FAC. Cohors Aedilis web-page in http://aediles.novaroma.org/apulus/ludi/naumachiae.htm and after reading the rules send a message to sceptia@yahoo.es. You can choose your ship until 24th of March. The battle will be set for Ludi Megalesia 9th of April.

The roaring sea cries under the steers... blood and fire, wind and salty water; The very First Naumachiae of Nova Roma has started.

Vale bene,

L·DIDIVS·GEMINVS·SCEPTIVS
SCRIBA·AEDILIS

Salvete,
Thank you all very much for your suggestions, I will take them all to
heart and keep you all updated on our progress here at the far
reaches of the Republic.

Oh, also, I've been noticing that people have been introducing
themselves to the mainlist, which I didn't know was in good order to
do. So now's as goog a time as ever, right?

My name is Laecus Galerius Felix, I am a 19 year old student at the
University of Utah and extremely interested in history and
linguistics (and the combination thereof: historical linguistics).
I found Nova Roma through an internet search on roman religious
practices and was so impressed that after having read the
constitution and most other legel documents along with every possible
branch of the novaroma.org page, I joined up.

So any way, I just wanted to formally introduce myself, thanks for
your time,

Laecus Galerius Felix

This would make me not the only college student. Except I'm only 18, and
attend University of North Carolina (as a math and history major, my
concentration in history being, of course, ancient/medieval).

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Translation
From: jmath669642reng@webtv.net

I would like to take amoment to thank most sincerly those gentlemen who
have assisted me in my translation problems. I had previously asked for
help with the phrase:

"Triumphant in New York Law"

This phrase in Latin will be carved upon a Rudius (Wooden Sword --
Symbol of a Gladiator's Freedom) and presented to a very good friend of
mine, and Nova Roma Citizen (not yet on line) who has just passed the
New York Bar Examination. As I undersand it, New York has one of the
most problematic of the state bar exams in the U.S.

The phrase selected by those who are to complete the carving is:

"Triumphator in Novi Eboraci Legibus"

My very sincere thanks to:

--Cn, Iulius Strabo;

--Manius Villius Limitanus;

--Gaius Bacillicanus Agricola.

For thier very valuale assistance.

While I was in Norway, I purchased a Latin / English Dictionary by
Harper - Collins in Great Britain (just so I got the "real" thing
(Grin!!!!!).

After puzzling over the "grammar" portion of the dictionary for some
time and wrestling with the Verb Conjugations and Tenses as well as Noun
Cases and Declensions, I am even more appreciative of the assistance.
Once again my thanks.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens

Fair Winds and Following Seas!!!

I'd go with Villius' translation. It is the most accurate.
