From: Hedea Bianchia Dryantilla <hedeabianchia@unc.edu>

For starters, please let me calrify: I am NOT asking for help. I take the
honor code at my school seriously, and even if it were not there, I have my
own honor as a student and integrity as a person that I take even more
seriously (maybe I'm outdated, or maybe all my peers need help).

I am however, excited about my assignment for my Western Civilization
class, and I thought I would share it:

Select 3 primary source documents from our readings between February 7th
and March 7th ? they must all be from different centuries. Focusing mainly
on the contents of these documents and an analysis of the way they use
and refer to the Greco-Roman past, write an essay, 2-3 pages in
length, discussing how the idea of the classical past, especially Rome (and
Greece too, if you choose sources that mention it), persisted in Medieval
Christian culture. Are Rome and Athens just places? Or do they exist as as
some sort of ideal, as sources of identity, as sources of civilization and
its institutions? How does this classical identity link up with a Christian
cultural identity? You may want to refer to visual evidence from
pictures of manuscripts, sculpture, architecture, artifacts, etc. in your
book.

I love this class, and I am very much looking forward to this particular
assignment. (I am such a history major)

On the subject of this class, I do have something I would appreciate advice
on. We have an art history project that follows this essay. I've already
decided I'm making a webpage. This class goes through 1650 - so if anyone
has any good ideas on art from the begining of known civilization to 1650,
feel free to suggest away. I'm leaning towards something french danse
macabre myself, but I'd love to hear what others would suggest.

Salvete Quirites,

I Have just unsubscribed from the "For The Muses" list
due to offensive macronational political spam from a
non list member. This was made possible because the
list is set up where anyone can post, rather than
limiting posts to members.

This is to advise all modarators of lists that are
associated with Nova Roma that this problem is
occuring, and that it might spread to other lists. If
your list is set up where anyone can post, it could be
spammed next. I Advise all modarators of mailing lists
to set them so that only members can post, so that
your list isn't the next victim of a spammer.

That's the default setting for most lists. But it takes only seconds
to become a "member" and gain full posting priviliges.

The solution is to do as this list does: anyone can join, but all new
users are placed on moderated status until they've posted enough
that they are recognized as legitimate. That has kept this list
completely spam-free, even during the worst of the wave of porn
site adverts a few months back.

Fascinating site. Good example of clothing from the Roman period on

Just for the record I have to restate here what I have stated before

far as it robs the Tribunes of its agenda setting powers granted to

Sorry to be a nag, but this is just a friendly reminder that the voting for
the 2 vacant positions of Tribune is still going on! If you are a Plebeian
citizen and haven't voted yet, please do so now! Voting will continue until
March 6 1801 Roman time, 12:01 noon EST and 9:01 am PST. If you don't know
what to do, please see my email below.

Salvete Plebeian citizens!

The third run-off election for the 2 vacant offices of Tribunus Plebis is
now under way! If you are a Plebeian citizen, please go to
http://www.novaroma.org and click 'VOTE NOW'. Voting will continue until
Thursday March 6, 18:01 Roman Time, but why wait? Vote now!

Only Plebeian citizens may vote in this election. Not sure if you are a
Plebeian? No problem. Just go to http://www.novaroma.org/bin/view/gentes
Find the name of your gens (they are listed alphabetically). Two columns to
the right of your Gens name, click on the 'number of cives'. A new page
opens that contains a listing of all the citizens in your Gens. The word
'Patrician' or 'Plebeian' will be written on the left beneath the name of
your Gens. If it says 'Plebeian' then you need to vote!

If you don't remember your voter code or are a new citizen, again, no
problem. You can have it automatically mailed to you by doing the following:

Follow the same procedure as mentioned above. When you reach the page
listing all of the citizens in your Gens, locate your name and click on the
link. On the new page you'll see a box which contains information about you.
Click on "Get voter code". On the new page, enter your year of birth and
click 'request voter code'. Your voter code will be emailed to you. Once you
have your voter code, go to http://www.novaroma.org and click 'VOTE NOW'.

Thank you for your interest in this election!

Valete,

A. Apollonius Cordus to Consul & Senator T. Labienus
Fortunatus and all citizens and peregrines, greetings.

Many thanks for your exposition of Senate procedures -
I feel I can better imagine now what goes on.

And just to clear up a minor point:

You said:

Goodness no! I've never heard 'declaim' used in a
pejorative sense, and I can't quite think how it would
come to have one, unless by just sounding rather
formal and stuffy. Perhaps there's a divergence
between usage in North American English and my native
British English. At my secondary school a few pupils
were honoured by being asked to give 'declamations' at
the annual prize-giving ceremony. But then that was a
slightly archaic school.

Apologies to yourself and the rest of the Senate if my
choice of word offended.

I, too, raised that objection both on the main list and privately to Fl Vedius
on more than one occasion. He and I had a rather vigorous off-list debate
about it when we were revising the powers of the tribuni plebis. He wanted to
remove the tribunes' ability to convene the Senate completely, and I argued
that it was unhistorical to do so. In the end, we compromised by keeping the
status quo.

In any case, the argument for the status quo being constitutional is based upon
the separation between convening the Senate and setting its agenda. Those who
disagree argue that this violates the spirit of the tribunes' ability to
convene the Senate.

Quite possibly. To declaim usually means to recite a formal speech. However,
it can also mean to deliver a bombastic and essentially empty harangue or to
debate trite matters at length.

> Apologies to yourself and the rest of the Senate if my

I can't speak for anyone else, but I wasn't offended, given my Stoic bent and
the context of your use of the word. I took it as a suggestion that someone
should give an explanation to counter the appearance that Senatores are simply
windbags who don't give the subjects upon which they vote enough consideration,
rather than an implication that Senatores actually are such windbags.

I have been having problems with my yahoo acount which has resulted in my account being deactivated with all my Nova Roma related lists. Consequently all posts to me are bouncing.

If you are an owner or moderator of a list to which you think I once belonged, I would appreciate it if you could reactivate my account. "triumpho -are" is the stem you'd use

"Norma" means rule or standard

having taken the bar I consider it more of an interrogation than a test,
thats why i chose interragotio. laureola -ae (f) is a more scholastic form
of the word triumph, at least in modern usage. But you are in the ballpark.

T Labienus Fortunatus Consul Quiritibus SPD

Nova Roma
PO Box 1897
Wells, ME 04090

(cn.octavius.noricus@gmx.at).

alfabetico.

Subject: [Nova-Roma] List Bandwith
From: "Gnaeus Salix Astur <salixastur@yahoo.es>" <salixastur@yahoo.es>
Date: Tue, 04 Mar 2003 20:53:01 -0000
Cn. Salix Astur Quiritibus S.P.D.

Ex Officio Praetorio.

I write this lines to keep you informed about an important issue
concerning this very same mailing list.

Yahoo! provides a limited amount of free memory to this mailing list.
We are pretty close to fill that limit. The praetores have already
prepared a plan to solve this problem, by transferring some of the
archives found on this list to the Nova Roma web site, thanks to the
continuous aid of Marcus Octavius Germanicus. So you don't have to
worry :-).

However, given that we have a limited amount of space, I would like
to invite you all to take this into consideration when posting
messages to this list. Please trim your posts of all irrelevant
information. Not only will that save space; it will make your posts
clearer and easier to read as well.

No action whatsoever will be taken by these praetores against those
who fail to trim their posts, so, once again, you don't have to
worry ;-). But it is always a Pretty Good Thing to be polite towards
your fellow citizens, so please take this words into consideration.

CN·SALIX·ASTVR
PRAETOR

Ave Marcus Minucius Audens:

I can't offer much, but the ancient city of York was called "Eboricum" or
"Eburicum" (after a local deity). The spelling varied; plus, i'm not sure
of the case endings you would need....

Salve,

Cn. Iulius Strabo
