Salve,

I'm not getting that specific message, but the entire archive is
missing from the Factio Veneta list and there have been no new
messages on the Gens Cornelia list in over 24-hours, which is unusual.

Yahoo! does occassionally experience some problems with its mailing
list groups. I see it most on weekends. I suspect that they do some
system maintenance on late Friday night and it occassionally messes
things up over the weekend.

Salve all the money we resize goes to the treasury to pay for the Eagle FIRST and if we make some extra the senate can spend it as they wish.

Great idea!

One question.Take for example, the patron level. After all the perks, does
the balance go to the treasury? or where? Just curious.

I just checked all of mine, and the only one showing
that problem is the NovaRomaProvincae list. Thanks
for pointing it out.

My guess is that it's more of Yahoo's helpful service.
I hope they have the archive restored soon.

Salve L. Suetonius Nerva,

Thank you for your enthusiasm regarding the upcoming elections! Both of the
candidates who replied to your email would be excellent choices ofr Tribune!

As a current Tribune, I don't feel that it is appropriate that I publicly
support one candidate or another. Without mentioning names, I really do
believe that in the past, we have had citizens win an election and then not
do any work, considering Nova Roma to be more of a role playing game. That
said, I find the 2 candidates that you mentioned to be 'doers' rather than
gentlemen who are only looking for a title.

Both Gaius Modius Athanasius & Gaius Popillius Laenas hold other positions
and have already proven that they are extremely interested in promoting Nova
Roma and unselfishly doing work to better her. To me, these are the most
important qualifications. The rest will fall into place if they are elected.

Lucius Didius Geminus Sceptius is also a strong candidate and is very active
in Provincia Hispania. Gaius Geminius Germanus is also a candidate. but
unfortunately, I don't know much about him. How about it Gaius Geminius
Germanus? Like the rest of the citizens interested in this election, I would
like to learn more about you!

From: "Diana Moravia Aventina" <diana@pandora.be>

Salvete Tribune candidates,

Just for fun I have a few questions. There are no right or wrong answers,
but I hope this will help the citizens to get to know you better!

1) What are you doing currently to promote Nova Roma in your area? If you
are not currently promoting NR, what are your ideas regarding how to promote
NR in the future?

2) Which of the following duties of a Tribune do you find are most
important?
a) senate reporting?
b) organizing Plebeian elections?
c) writing new laws?
d) having the right of intercessio (veto) over the edicts made by other
magistrates?

3) If you have previously held or now hold an office in NR, what have been
the most rewarding parts of your duties? And what have been the most
difficult parts of your office?

4) What do you think would be the most personally rewarding part of being a
Tribune? What do you think would be the worst part?

Like I said, there are no 'correct' answers. I mean this email as a 'get to
know your Tribune candidates' email :-)

Valete!

That would be Secunda Cornelia Valeria, the former

long after I joined NR. I not sure if she is still active
or not. She is still list on the AMS listing on the NR webpage.

Salvete Quirites et Diana Moravia,

I see Diana, not that you are safely elected, you start quizzes for
the rest of us ;-). OK, here goes...

>>1) What are you doing currently to promote Nova Roma in your area?
If you are not currently promoting NR, what are your ideas regarding
how to promote NR in the future?<<

Laneas: I currently serve as the Praefectus Regio of the Magna
Flumen Regio of America Austrorientalis, which is the marconational
US states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee. We
have not been nearly as active as I would like. My plan of action
is to conduct a mini-census to determine who is active and then to
plan some regional face-to-face meetings. I believe face-to-face
meeting are the single most effective way to develop Nova Roma into
a real nation.

>>2) Which of the following duties of a Tribune do you find are most
important?
a) senate reporting?
b) organizing Plebeian elections?
c) writing new laws?
d) having the right of intercessio (veto) over the edicts made by
other
magistrates?<<

Laenas: Intercessio would have to be the most important, because it
is the defining duty/power of the Tribunate, and, by its very
nature, is a serious issue. I believe the Tribune's veto should
only be used to defend the Constitution and the personal rights of
individual cives.

Senate reporting and organizing elections are certainly important
duties that have to be performed.

I am always happy to contribute to drafting laws, however, I think
the primary responsibility for their promulgation lies with the
Consuls. As Tribune I could only see proposing laws that were
specific to the Plebians and addressing a great need that was not
being met.

>>3) If you have previously held or now hold an office in NR, what
have been
the most rewarding parts of your duties? And what have been the most
difficult parts of your office?<<

I held the elected office of Quaestor last year. My primary duty
was the collection and recording of our first tax levy. Taxation
was, and continues to be, a contentious issue, but I feel revenue
for NR is critical, so it was rewarding to be involved in actually
completing the process for the first time. I also got to correspond
with a number of cives all over our Republic.

The most difficult part was trying to devise an easy way for non-US
cives, who couldn't use PayPal, to remit the tax. Involvement at
the Provincial level (Hispania comes to mind as an excellent
example) was extremely helpful.

>>4) What do you think would be the most personally rewarding part
of being a
Tribune? What do you think would be the worst part?<<

Laenas: Getting to know more about the workings of the Senate and
interaction with the other Tribunes. I would hope it would never
arise, but using the veto to actually protect the rights of a cive
is the very essence of the Tribunate.

The worst: having to organize multiple run-off elections ;-O.

Valete,
Gaius Popillius Laenas
Candidate for Tribune

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Mediatlantica province -- Initial Governor's Report
From: Bill Gawne <gawne@cesmail.net>
Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 11:22:40 -0500
Gn. Equitius Marinus Praetor America Mediatlantica Provincia
Senatus et Civibus Novae Romae SPD:

I assumed the duties as Provincial Praetor (governor) of America
Mediatlantica province on February 7th, 2756 a.u.c. (2003 CE).
Here's what I've been able to accomplish as governor since then:

-- Requested and received from the Censors a census roll for the
province.

-- Sent out a mass e-mailing to all citizens listed on the census roll

-- Purged e-mail addresses which bounced with error messages
indicating that those accounts no longer exist

-- Established positive e-mail, telephone, or in-person contact with 63
other citizens in the province, so that I can now report 64 active citizens.

-- Received significant help from several citizens in tracking down
people who have moved or changed e-mail addresses.

-- More than doubled the membership of the provincial mailing list.

-- Reappointed Legata Merlinia Ambrosia Artori as Legate for the
province with primary duties in Nova Caesaria (New Jersey).

-- Appointed two new Legates, Marcus Ambrosius Incendium and Gallio
Velius Marsallas, for Nova Eboricum (New York) and Pennsylvania,
respectively.

-- Attended two public events where Nova Roma citizens were present,
the SCA Black Gryphon Inn event in Edison NJ, and the Legio XX
Lupercalia celebration in Alexandria VA. Much fun was had by all.

-- Added three new citizens to my census rolls, bringing the total of
registered Nova Roman citizens in the province to 194.

That's all good news. At this point I can report that fully 1/3 of
the enrolled citizens of the province are in communication with me,
and are interested in continuing their Nova Roma affiliation. It
remains to be seen how many of these people will pay their tax this
time, but I'm optimistic that Mediatlantica will return significantly
more revenue this year than it did last year.

On the bad news side, I've established that some people who are on our
census roll were not cognizant of the fact they'd been enrolled as
citizens of Nova Roma. Once I have a complete listing of these names
I will forward it to the Censors, for such action as they may see fit.
These people definitely do not wish to be affiliated with Nova Roma.

We also have the remaining problem of a large number of unresponsive
citizens. The e-mails I send them don't bounce, but the people never
reply. I continue to try to reach these people via telephone in the
evenings as my other commitments permit, but it's slow going. I have
made some contacts this way, so it's not entirely in vain, but it has
not been nearly as fruitful as I'd wish. Once I've attempted to
contact all of my non-responders by telephone, I'll send out paper
mail to those I've not been able to contact. I should have a full
accounting of all the citizens in the province available no later than
the end of March.

Praetor, America Mediatlantica Provincia

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Are there any other senior citizens in Nova Roma?
From: "biojournalism <biojournalism@hotmail.com>" <biojournalism@hotmail.com>
Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 19:25:10 -0000
Salvete Omnes:

Just curious: Are there any other senior citizens in Nova Roma? Do
they meet at senior centers or other comfortable places to gather
and talk about books or other subjects related to Nova Roma or any
aspect of Roman history, art, architecture, inventions, etc?

Also curious: Any members in Sacramento? I'm looking for groups to
join where there are many people my age--over 60. This could be to
view films, discuss books, a writers or artists group, design, etc.
What Nova Roma could take advantage of is the free meeting space in
senior centers devoted to an interest in classical arts, history,
writing, science, etc. We have in Sacramento the Renaissance
Society, for retirees interested in listening to lectures and
participating in lifelong learning of new subjects. Perhaps someone
would like to form an ancient Roman studies class. There's an
ancient civilizations class, but it's off a bus line, so most of us
seniors who don't drive can't get to it.

If you do form a group keep it at noontime or during daylight hours
to give seniors traveling far a chance to get there by bus and get
home before dark for safety reasons. Good places to meet are in
library conference rooms (always free), university auditoriums, as
where the Renaissance society can meet, if in Sacramento, and the
large recreational halls of senior centers, wherever you live.

Reason: We seniors have a lot of time on our hands to do creative
things or listen to discussions. For example, I'm writing a novel on
ancient Rome. Someone else might be an artist. Someone else might
create a video on Nova Romans around the world or in the US, or
their state, etc.

The image of Nova Roma is of young people, but I know there are lots
of senior citizens out there, retired or not, who probably have the
time now to focus on hobbies and creative projects. At least I do as
far as writing fiction set in ancient Rome. Maybe we writers should
join up with the graphic artists and the videographers and produce a
video for the schools on Nova Roma or on the study of these related
subjects. Topics could range from ship building in ancient Rome, for
example, to inventions such as the water wheel, to anti-bacterial
herbs such as honey and cinnamon or recipes, writing plays, or any
other subject, artistic, historic, military, or scientific. Projects
like these may be of help to teachers and even poets in the school
projects.

I guess that depends on how you define "senior citizen." If you
use age 50, as the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons)
does, then I have several in my province. If you're looking for
people over age 60 (as you suggested later on) then I'm sure of
two just off the top of my head and there may well be more.

In Portuguese, Spanish and I guess French languages we still say "libra" for
both weight and money measurements, even though we don't use them (we use
the international metric system and our own currencies insted).
So, how and why have the only peoples who still use them changed its name
from "libra" to "pound"??

Pound is also derived from Latin. Websters Dictionary
gives the following Etymology,

Middle English, from Old English pund, from Latin
pondo pound, from ablative of pondus weigh

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Veto of one item in "The Eagle and your Patronage"

Salve Illustrus Tiberius Galerius Paulinus!

I acknowledge the ambitions that You have when it comes to the Eagle,
this is well and good, but it is the Senate that takes all decisons
about the budget according to the Constitution V. B.

Because of the present discussion in the Senate about a modification
of the Budget where the Eagle is one of the main issues I must VETO
item 3. (below) in your latest message according to the power given
to me by the Constitution IV A. 2. d.

The Senate is at the moment discussing a decision that involves a
decison about such longtime undertakings and it would be to
anticipate the decision of the Senate to allow such a project on your
part.

LOL!!!!!

Granted I agree with the veto...but he has alot to learn about explaining his legal justifications. <g>

He could simply have stated that the Cureator differum has not jurisdictional authroity to promulgate edicts that deal with financial matters because Section V of the Constitution gives the Senate that authority.

Vale,

Sulla
