I don't personaly know of such a place Lili, but it occurs
to me that someone in the Sodalitas Latinitas may. Have you
asked there? If not, I could ask for you, or you could join

Nova Roma is having a Latin course at the Academia Thules online at the
main-site. The course going on right now isn't accepting any new members
though. They'll probably have another course starting up fairly soon.

The Oxford Classical Dictionary says of the word tribune, "The word is
evidently connected with /tribus/, but it is uncertain whether the
tribunes were at first chiefs of the tribes who later became officers of
the /plebs/... or whether the title imitated that of the /tribuni
militum/ already existing." The OCD makes no mention of roads, triple
or otherwise, in the section discussing the tribuni plebis.

I suggest that your definition is not the one accepted by the majority
of modern historians. And, as I do not remember* coming across the
"three-road" interpretation in my rather extensive reading on the
subject, I'd greatly appreciate knowing its source.

(*I may have encountered it; I make no claim to a perfect memory.)

The Title "Tribunus" predates the Tribuni Plebis by
hundreds of years, so there is no way any duties
performed by the Tribuni Plebis could have had an
effect on the name.

Smith's has an on line page that anyone can check out,
complete with citations from the ancient sources, on
the various offices called "Tribunus"

The three way crossroad was the ViaTrames. Often info in the form of
handbills were posted there at the mile column.

This is because of the election period (no new citizens are accepted

My Lewis and Short backs up this definition as well. Not a word about
3 way roads meeting under tribunus.

No, but besides Caeso Fabius' suggestion of the Academia Thules course, you
can always try those CD's and books sets like 'Teach Yourself'. Not ideal, I
know, but it is a good way to start and they do help. I learned to speak
the basics of Dutch and German with these books, so they do work. <MO

Anyway, the ONE advantage that we have in Belgium is that Latin & Greek is
still part of the school curriculum and lessons can easily be taken at the
local Cultural Centers.

Honestly, that is what I did with maximus 3777. No Roman name, & no clue in
the email header. At first I thought it was Q Fabius Maximus, but 2
sentences into the email I realized that it wasn't. Another reason that I
like to see the full Roman name is because I like to look up the names on
the Albium Gentium and see what Gens the person is in, if they hold an
office etc. etc. It gives me a better idea of who they are, why they have

Greetings all,

My name is Ivstinvs Arcanvs Latomvs, and i am a new civis in NR. I
am a linguistic student at a university in north Florida, with a
minor in history. One project that I want to work on within NR is
tho study the mystery religions as practiced throughout the Imperium
and to revive them into actual practice. Another project is to
create a very concise Latin lexicon online to be available for all
members of NR, especially those who have no knowledge of Latin and
would like to learn the lingua franca of this micronation and its
inspiration. If anyone here would like to work with me on either of
these projects, my e-mail address is heosphorus at yahoo.com and we
will get started. Thanks.

I must admit, I'm guilty of the same thing. When I realized that maximus3777
wasn't Senator Fabius (as well as the fact that it came to me as a moderated
message), I didn't know who it was. So I read a little further, and came to
find out that I had no idea who it could be. And I still have no idea, for
that matter.

Anyway, I can see where you have a point for asking for the full signature
(or at least something that we can all identify one as) from those who post to
the mailing list. Perhaps the Praetors of next year may add this to an
introductory message for newcomers to the list, as part of a "common courtesy"
effort, or something.

Just an idea on an idea.

Salvete Omnes,

As our official timezone is that of Rome, it is Roman time that determines
when the year ends. The year 2756 is a little more than six hours away,
and the imperium of the current magistrates will expire then.

Shortly after 17:00 Central email aliases such as "consuls@novaroma.org" will
be altered to forward to the new officeholders; the Magistrates page on
the website will be updated shortly after. New magistrates can make their
oaths beginning at that time.

Thanks.

Ad maiorem Romae gloriam,

Vale Ivstinvs Arcanvs Latomvs

Salve Diana!
Anyway, the ONE advantage that we have in Belgium is that Latin & Greek is
still part of the school curriculum and lessons can easily be taken at the
local Cultural Centers.

MOS: I might add that it's only part of the school curriculum in the ASO-type of education (meaning you can't combine Latin with say metallurgy or more practical oriented educations), and only if you choose it out of a list. And "the one advantage"? There are more advantages, methinks! :o)

Happy New Year to all by the way!

Vale bene,
Solaris

I wouldn't mind assisting with compilation, etc., in the service of a
a well-formed, disciplined end.

You realize, however, that lexicography is a violent undertaking; the
fruit of selfless piety?

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Senior Consul's Year-End Address, MMDCCLV
From: Marcus Octavius Germanicus <haase@konoko.net>
Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2002 15:39:16 -0600 (CST)

Salvete Omnes Cives Novae Romae,

Today, pridie Kal. Ianuarias MMDCCLVI, is the final day of my
Consulship.

This has been an eventful year. It began with a debate concerning the
authority of the Censores to exercise their Constitutional powers;
the results of which caused one of our two Patres Patriae to depart,
and ultimately led to the relocation of our mailing list.

In June, I defended our Constitutional balance of powers by thwarting
an attempt to severely limit the Censores' ability to control the
appointment of new Senators.

In the months that followed, the Senate discussed a reform of our
unhistorical gens system. In spite of our best efforts, neither the
Senate nor the People were permitted to vote on this important issue;
but I have great hope that it will be addressed in the coming year.

Though much of the year seemed to be devoted to squabbling, there
were some important accomplishments:

* Gatherings of citizens took place in Rome, Belgium, Maryland, Ohio,
Ontario, and twice in Spain.

* Much of the website has been translated into Portuguese, German, French,
Spanish, and Italian, with some important pages also in Latin and Swedish.
Citizens were able to vote in any of six languages, and newcomers could
apply for citizenship in three languages.

* The number of centuries was reduced, allowing the election for Consul
to conclude in the first round. The system is still not perfect, as
shown by the lack of new Praetores, but it has improved.

* NOVA ROMA was registered as a Service Mark in the United States, which
protects our name from misuse by competing organizations. In a few
months, this process will be finished, and we will be entitled to
use of the "(R)" symbol.

* The membership fees have been adjusted to be more easily borne by citizens
outside the wealthier nations of North America or Western Europe,
enabling more citizens to participate in our system.

* The Senate was expanded by five members, and its geographic diversity
increased: two North Americans, two South Americans, and one European
were admitted.

* Four years of mailing list archives, and a search engine, were added
to our web site.

And, finally, the citizens made the best possible choices for next year's
Consuls; two of the most hardworking and morally upright Senators it has
ever been my pleasure to know. The new year of MMDCCLVI will be a
momentous year of progress in which we can expect superbly capable
administration and well-written, fair and beneficial laws.

I thank you all for allowing me to serve as Consul.

Valete,
M. Octavius Germanicus,
Consul.
