Subject: [Nova-Roma] FYI Seven Wonders of the Modern World
From: "Stephen Gallagher" <spqr753@msn.com>

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present
Seven Wonders of the World.

Though there was some disagreement, the following got the most votes:

1. Egypt's Great Pyramids

2. the Taj Mahal

3. the Grand Canyon

4. the Panama Canal

5. the Empire State Building

6. St. Peter's Basilica

7. China's Great Wall.

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one quiet student hadn't
turned in her paper yet, so she asked the girl if she was having trouble
with her list.

The girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because
there were so many."

The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help."

The girl hesitated a moment, but then began reading her list.

"I think the seven wonders of the world are:

1. to touch

2. to taste

3. to see

4. to hear -- she hesitated a little, and then added:

5. to feel

6. to laugh

7. and to love.

The room was so full of silence, you could have heard a pin drop.

Those things we overlook as simple and "ordinary" are truly wondrous -- a
gentle reminder that the most precious things are in front of you.

in any case, "dea" is a better alternative :).

As someone who has operated lists via Yahoo, I can advise that these
problems are common, and if I could afford a different service, then I'd use
it. Missing messages, changing statuses of subscribers, messages
disappearing into the void, lists that don't obey the rules set for them.
All quite normal.

Galerius, if the moderators say you aren't moderated, then you aren't. If
the yahoo service has glitches, then blame it, not the moderators. And even
if your posts *are* being moderated, that doesn't mean everyone else cannot
read them, but that they get approved first, so what?
Five minutes for messages to show up? Gods! That's pretty good for a mail
server. Especially a free one.

Moderators - I recommend pointing out to everyone who subscribes that if
they want a better service, they can pay for it. Better list software and
services exist. But for free? Never.

Salve Curator Differum-Elect,

While I applaud your enthusiasm to assume your offices, just a
friendly reminder that this oath and the one for quaestor is not
valid and will have to be officially taken on the 1st or after and
not just dated on the 1st. Think of yourself as standing before us
taking this oath when the new year turns.

The Lex Cassia Iunia de Iusiurando (which amedned the Lex Iunia

I like this idea! Besides so very many experts on Roman subjects, many of

Well met, amice.

> I looked up recenseo, the verb, and it implies count and review,
>connected to count and numbers, not of quality.

When recensere was later applied to literary texts, it adopted, according to
Lewis and Short, the following senses:

"III. Trop., to go over in thought, in narration, or in critical treatment,
to reckon up, recount, review, revise."

Another example from Aulus Gellius (C.AE. 123 - c. 165) serves to illuminate
the point, when in Noctes Atticae "sed quae procrastinata sunt ab eo, ut
post recenserentur [poemata]," (17.10.6.1) refers to an examination of the
Aeneid according to both edition (the establishment of the raw text) and
meaning (its comparison, for instance, with Pindar's poetry).

>also, aren't we doing the literal translation here?

Not necessarily; "literal translation" is a deadly vice. Although
servicable in school on account of diaphanous structures and a "one-to-one"
relationship, it ultimately impedes native insight. Native insight is
achieved above all when we've forged an immediate relationship to the
language, undistracted by translation and crude mechanisms of understanding.
Only then can we achieve a living communication, and that seldom happens
"literally".

"Graveyards of Chicago", and Patricia Cassia's book "Celtic Wicca",
are both listed in our Macellum's Amazon bookstore at:

From: jmath669642reng@webtv.net
Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 11:08:59 -0500 (EST)
Senator Palladius;

The error of giving the Oath early on the part Of Curator Differum
Tiberius was mine. He asked me, and I indicated that since he would
not be available on or near the 1st of January, that I saw no problem
with issueing the Oath a few days early, particularly since he has
worked so hard, to insure that an issue of the "Eagle" would be ready to
be issued on the 1st of the year, and I felt that it was appropriate
that the Citizens of Nova Roma should be made aware that the office of
Curator Differum which in past years has been abandoned or badly
neglected, had been undertaken by a gentleman full of eagerness for the
task. However, I neglected to survey the Constitution in detail, before
making a reply to this young man, therefore I take responsibility, for
his breach.

He has been an eager young man, and has done an excellent job so far in
an effort to maintain and re-establish "Eagle" to a monthly publication,
filled with news and thereby making a strong reflection of this aspect
of Nova Roma's world. He has taken a strong interest in his new duties
and made a good start in gathering material, staff and significant
support. Far better than some of the past elected "Eagle"
administrators. Further, in my particular case he has been attentive to
reply to my messages and to my suggestions, poor though they may have
been. Such response has not always been available from some past
elected officers in this position.

Yes, you are quite correct in your strict reminder of the letter of the
law. My answer to Curator Tiberius was in error. I very much
appreciate your taking the time and effort to determine and make public
this error of mine, providing the Constitution's wording, and correcting
this breach of the law. However, I beg that you will not hold it
against the Curator Differum Tiberius, but rather will lay this
unfortunate situation at my door instead.

I welcome this opportunity to make all the Nova Roma Citizens aware of
this young man's strong and immediate industry in his new position and
rather daunting task, even at the price of making all aware of my error.

Perhaps in the future you will consider a private warning to others who
violate the Consttitution unwittingly, and allow them to make a
correction themselves rather than subject anyone to a public
embarrassment without first trying to deal with the personage in
private. Of course, this is merely a suggestion on my part, and your
must deal with such a "grievious error" as you see fit as a Senator and
Proconsul.

In closing you and the Citizens of Nova Roma, have my apologies for my
error, and my thanks for your energy in correcting such, in this concise
and timely manner.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens

Senator,
I am confused. Are you saying the correction should be made in private to
spare embarassment, or that we just open the door to other constitional
mistakes? I felt that
Iunius was quite forthright in point, the young man accepted it as such, and
we moved on. Other potentials read the statement, which stopped their oaths
from happening prematurly, if any had planned to do so.
If guilt forces you to set the record straight so be it. But was the 6th

I simply have a mailing problem that is not unique. Other members of

messing up the format which I noticed happened to your post too.

It seems clear, now, that the problem is not caused by the list being

Never.

Salve Pitrinii Atheniensis:

I feared you may have to go through too much trouble digging it up, but
it was too late. I had already put out the post.

I appreciate that, thank you very much.

Vale
Galerius Peregrinator.

VII Kal. IANVARIAS MMDCCLV

SAXUS GALERIO SALUTEM
