Salve Gai Galeri Peregrinator
Thank you very much Gai!. By the way we have very good red wine
(Burgundy or Malbec for example) for export from Mendoza!. Maybe the
Romans and Greeks would have liked it and would have gotten drunk
more often :-) LOL . And the steak is very tasty as usual.
I wish someday I could eat the argentininan way while dressed the
Roman way with a toga :-) . Cheers!

A joyful Saturnalia to everyone, and a joyful Christmas to those who
celebrate it!

Cassius and I are having friends over tonight for a candle gift
exchange and an offering to Saturn. We'll have Roman dice games for
people to play, and clay to make sigillaria (figurines that were given
to children at this season). We don't have any slaves with whom to
exchange roles, but we may let the teen-agers sit on the couch while we
sit on the floor.

In the latest issue of Archaeology magazine, there are two items of interests for NRs. The first is on the Temple to Antonious at Hadrian's Villa. The brief report includes a photo of a statue of the young man depicted as Osiris. The second item is on the last page of the magazine. It has a photo of four Roman military reenactors and a text by Matthew Amt.

Avete et Salutatio Commilitones

MAXIMUS CONQUERS NEW YORK BAR !!!
Our Palus Primus (lead gladiator), Maximus Mercurius Gladius (John Ebel),
has finally triumphed over the New York State Legal Bar Exam!
In his former life as a commercial fisherman, we can be sure that Maximus
had conquered many bar joints in his time; but the New York Bar, where
no sprits are served, proved to be a formidable opponent. The N.Y. Bar is
probably the toughest bar exam in the nation, according to John.
This was the third time John had taken the Exam, being deprived of victory
in his second try by only two points! To quote John, "Hardly anybody passes
the first time and many never pass after many attempts". We should all
be very proud of John and his gladiatorial tenacity in pursuing his quest to be
a New York State Lawyer. We now have a real "Legal Eagle" in our midst.
Gratulatatio!! - Macte!! - Maximus!! Congratulations - Well Done!! John.

NEW MEMBERS
Robert Mowrey came onboard in November and is serving with the
Vexillation unit in Mississippi.

Brendon Allan will be defending the interests of Rome and representing
the Legion as a Vexillation up in the wild north of Edmonton Alberta Canada

This is a brief Vicesima Quarta as things have been quiet. Want to see more
in this Newsletter? Write something for it. Your progress in getting kitted-up?
A report on a new piece of equipment you have acquired? Your view of an
event in an "after-action report"? A historical essay on a Roman battle or
event or Emperor or General? Book Reviews? Get the drift? Right? - WRITE !

BLESSINGS OF THE GODS are extended to all, as their beliefs may dictate, for the celebration of Saturnalia and Winter Solstice and for a most joyous Holiday Season and a most prosperous New Year 2756 (MMDCCLVI) AUC.

Salvete,

The picture in Archaeology also has two citizens of Nova Roma.
>From the Left Matthew Amt, Ron Kenat, Michael Cope (Lucius Equitius
Cincinnatus), and Richard Campbell (Aulus Equitius Graecus). I was
disappointed that they only gave the name of Matthew as we all took
time to discuss the Roman military with Ms. Lobell and her partner.
Each of us gave our name (Roman and mundane) and our hometown.

I've been a subscriber to the magazine for a few years and was really
looking forward to the column and picture. We all contributed to the
discussion, myself discovering the effect of an increase in pilum
distance and accuracy with very little practice with the theory that
a young, healthy man would be very formidable with such a deadly
weapon after daily exercise. I like to set up a haybale and chuck
pila at it for a little while. I found that the next day I can easily
add 5 yards! and hit the target much more often too.

Anyway, Archaeology often has Roman related articles on a variety of
subjects. http://www.archaeology.org/

This is one where Latin sounds heavy-handed and a single word might be preferable. Of course we are familiar in English, with much shorter words, while speakers of Romance languages are familiar with the X de Y format becoming commoner in English.
Still, Book Review sounds slightly pretentious and un-Latin: I would go for Bibliocritica.

Somebody didn't recognise the expression 'from where I sit' as having a significance of viewpoint in English and there surely isn't any such pun available easily in Latin. Could the sense be given quite differently, 'Visus altissimis curulibus' or similar?
