Subject: [Nova-Roma] Roman Chariot Racing
From: cassius622@aol.com
Date: Sun, 1 Dec 2002 22:18:46 EST
Salvete,

There was just a great show on TLC about Roman chariot racing called "Chariot
Race 2000". The show reconstructed an ancient Roman race track, period
chariots, and had four teams of horses do an authentic race.

I was really quite surprised! The whole thing was much more interesting than
I'd have thought. I'm not much for sports, but think I could have gotten into
Chariot racing. Especially since each color represented a different season,
qualities, and deities...

There is information about the program on www.tlc.com. It's worth checking
out, and perhaps they'll run the show again sometime!

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus

Maybe this will be the start of a new reality series for
TV or if enough people see it the beginning of a New Old
sport. NASCAR fans probably would love it.

Salvete Omnes:

I feel compelled to clarify the following issue which has come to my
attention:

Apparently, at some point, a certain magistrate has issued emails to
atleast one citizen, possibly more, telling them to more or
less 'keep quiet' on the list about given issues, on my behalf, while
I was Praetor and Moderator of this List.

Let me be perfectly clear, in that I gave no such authorization to
any magistrate. My scriba had her instructions, and generally
speaking, I would issue my own warnings, comments if I had a problem
with anyone's communication. My scriba would advise me of any
concerns she had.

Any magistrate issuing communication warnings to anyone here was
doing so on his own behalf, and without direct authorization from me,
to act in loco Praetoribus (hope I spelled that correctly).

I tried to adhere to the constitution of Nova Roma and the list
guidelines, which are based on this constitution, and not any other
manifesto of governance, during my tenure.

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Gens Moravia.org website and question for the Paterfamilas'
From: "Diana Moravia Aventina" <diana@pandora.be>
Date: Mon, 2 Dec 2002 15:45:08 +0100
Roman BriefpapierSalvete,

The http://www.gensmoravia.org is about half completed. If some of you have
time, I would like you to take a look and let me know what you think. The
first 6 pages are completed.Constructive criticism is welcomed! Basically, I
am interested in how fast/slow it downloads, user friendliness, etc. Since I
have a super fast cable connection, I am not a good judge as to how long it
would take for someone with a regular telephone connection to download the
site.

Also, a question for the Pater/Materfamilias' in Nova Roma: What criteria do
you use (if any) to accept new citizens to your respective gentes? I have
written a few sentences on the website under 'contact us' and would like to
know what you think. Ten days ago, I received a request to join Gens Moravia
and the person's email to me only said 'request permission to join the
gens'. There wasn't even a 'Dear Diana' or a 'from John Doe written. I am
sure that he is a good person, but since I had never heard of him, I
basically wrote to him asking him to tell me a bit about himself (pretty
much what I have written on the 'contact us' page). I have received no
answer from him, so I am wondering if maybe I've asked too much :-p My goal
is to have a gens of citizens who are at least slightly active on one of our
many NR elists. We have many people who join Nova Roma on a whim and then we
never hear from them again.

Anyway, I would appreciate hearing what your opinions are in the matter of
approving new citizens. You can always email me off list at diana@pandora.be
if you'd prefer.

Valete,
Diana Moravia Aventina

Salve Moravia:

That could be the same that happened to me when I first joined. There
is the citizen application in the NR website, and one fills that out and one
of the questions is to check which gens the applicant wishes to join, and
one checks that and doesn't know he also needs to write to the head of the
gens. It doesn't say so in the application.

It's there, on the third page:

You have elected to become a member of gens ${G.nomenf} and use
the nomen (surname) of ${nomen}. To join this gens, you must have
the permission of the ${PLABEL}, the head of the family:

Salve,

In the USA most states have, through the Department of Motor Vehicles, a program for organizational plates for cars and trucks. In Maryland you need a small number of people to get the plates but in California you would need 7500. Money goes to the organization for each plate sold and renewed and it would be great advertising for Nova Roma. The money could go to the NR treasury or split between NR and the province that has a workable program. Just an Idea. If you live in a state outside of Maryland and California maybe you can look into your states program. Is there a similar program in other countries?

Salve Diana Moravia,

The mater can have whatever discussion's she wishes with the
applicant via personal e-mail. Some families have websites that
outline what the process is.

http://home.earthlink.net/~adherbal/joinus.html

I'm sure there are others. I post the link to my own, unfortunately
I lack the expertise to establish a site.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Latest McCullough Book
From: "gaiuspopilliuslaenas" <ksterne@bellsouth.net>
Date: Mon, 02 Dec 2002 20:02:02 -0000
Salvete Omnes,

For those who may be interested, the most recent (and last) "Masters
of Rome" novel by Colleen McCullough titled "The October Horse" has
been recently released in the US (and perhaps elsewhere???)

Here is a brief note from amazon.com:

>>From Publishers Weekly
Caesar may be the nominal protagonist of this last novel in a series
of six chronicling the demise of the Roman Republic, but the
presiding spirit is that of Octavian (later Augustus), Caesar's
successor and Rome's first emperor. McCullough's Octavian is as
complex and gifted as her Caesar, but far less moral, just or
merciful-a fitting ruler for a Rome grown too unwieldy for
republican government. McCullough's heady novel begins with Caesar
as dictator of Rome. Brilliant, ruthless, ascetic in his habits and
devoted to the welfare of Rome, he enacts a series of reforms while
consolidating his power and fathering a son with Cleopatra. The
Egyptian, here portrayed as spoiled and shortsighted but
passionately in love with Caesar, is just one in a panoply of richly
imagined characters: Cato, obdurate republican and traditionalist;
Mark Antony, a crass brute with a streak of animal cunning; decent
Brutus, batted between his mother, the poisonous Servilia, and
Porcia, his vengeful wife. Caesar is a bit too perfect in
McCullough's telling, and Antony too monstrous; the novel also
suffers from a sameness of voice throughout. But the skillfulness of
McCullough's portrait of Octavian will make readers wish more novels
were in the offing. Introduced as a guarded, talented youth, he is
transformed by Caesar's assassination into a merciless, retributive
man-or perhaps he simply shows his true colors. The book ends in a
dark blaze of vengeance with his pursuit and destruction of Caesar's
assassins.<<

Gaius Popillius Laenas

An interesting suggestion, Galeri Pauline.

In the European Union at least, number plates are issued and defined by
each national government, with a common identifier in most cases (the
twelve yellow stars in a blue field, with a letter representing the
state below them). But there are no personalised number plates. So this
would be impossible.

I don't know about the rest of the world, though.

However, we should not forget we are children of Rome. We still enjoy a
horror movie, are fascinated by pictures of tragedies, or enjoy competitive
sports. This is one of the reasons I think the viewing of NASCAR racing has
spiked because of increased chance of death or maiming by using the speed
governor. It sets the final approval on the victory. It now takes driving
skill to succeed not just brutal horsepower. Man has been tested in his
metal cages, and has conquered. The pleasure that results is a primal
feeling going back to the dawn of time. I believe if we had Ludi today they
would be well attended, much like the races today, with all sorts of betting
in Las Vegas.
