Master G. Porticus Brutis and all new citizens to Nova Roma;

Sir, I am flattered by your response to my message of welcome.
Unfortunately for the distance between us it may well be some time
before I am able to come to your part of the world. My present home is
in Connecticut, athough at heart I am a Western Boy, and not really
comfortable East of the Mississppi (Grin!!!!!!!!!!!). However, my dear
wife has supported me through two separate careers, and I think it only
fair to remain here in the East to support her in hers.

I applaud your setting up a Roman Table for friends in the area. This
is really how Roman get togethers begin. Senator and Beneficarius
Strabo, Senators Cassius and Cassia Julianus, Senator / Censor
Cincinnatus, Commander Gallio (XXIVth Legio) and many others here have
the details of how to begin to organize a "Market Days" or a Roman Show
in your area.

I would strongly suggest that you gather ideas and those that strike you
as doable in the time and resources that you have begin to put together
a plan. You should of course work through your Provincia Organization,
as they may well have some good ideas and local contacts. As we become
more sophisticated in our events we will be able to make a greater
impact on our local communities as well as those more distant from us.

If you have a limited number of local people, then perhaps a garden
party, or a Roman Dinner will be a suitable get together. The XXth
Legio has a long record of get-togethers based on building armor, making
caligae, and sewing garments. These events can be a lot of fun and be a
draw for those interested in the Roman Way. Listen to other ideas as
your circle of Roman friends grow, because as the number grows, also
will grow the list of resources available to you. Learning how to
identfy, and utilize resources is one of the main keys to a successful
local event.

As to "teaching" anyone, I am a person who is fond of individual
freedom, so I do not collect clients, and I have a small but select
Patrician Gens who are fiercely independent and from what they tell me
are satified to be so. My knowledge and skills such as they are are
available for those who have questions. I am a lousy politician, since
I am not very good at gathering support for a planned movement, trading
favor for power or support, and in general taking advantage of any
position to make myself a greater person than I am. Many here in Nova
Roma think me foolish for not taking more advantage of my position, but
I am content in my apparent "unawareness" (Grin
again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Do not mistake, I pray, that I am anything but a cantankerous old man
who is opinionated, forward, irritating to many and downright disliked
by a few-----has a bad attitude generally speaking and is militant by
nature and tends to think in terms of organizational blocks, rather that
going outside the lines.

However, as some here have very generously said, I do "have my moments",
however few and far between they may be (Grin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

I welcome you to the Militarium and the Egressus, either or both, and
all that is required to join is a message to Beneficarius Strabo:

Trog99@hotmail.com

requesting to join. Once there the archives will be open to you
regarding the purposes and goals of two Nova Roma Sodalitas.

I made an offer some days ago to anyone who was interested in doing
something significant in Nova Roma, that I would be willing to review
thier interests and thier backgrund and provide them with a list of
ideas and at least one firm offer of a position in which they could
further Nova Roma in some way while earning the service and knowledge of
Nova Roma in the bargain. That offer is still open to all newcomers
that may have an interest in such, have some time to devote to such, and
be willing to work at a task for at least one year.

Be warned, that I am not a person who is easy to wok for or with, but I
think I can guarantee and interesting time for your investment of
effort.

Best of Luck and Good fortune here in Nova Roma, and if there is any way
in which I may assst you in finding your place in NR, you have but to
ask.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens

If it is super super urgent, anyone can always call me on my mobile and I'll
pass the phone to Caeso Fabius Quintilianus or any of the other NR
Rally-ers. Number +32 498 758352. But it's a mobile so it would be an
expensive telephone call!

Don't forget to bring cameras! This event is important, and should be
recorded in the Pinacotheca and the Annales.

Salvete Omnes!

I am pleased to give you a short report on a Roman gathering which took
place at Fort Malden, Amhearstburg,Ontario near the Windsor/Detroit border
this past weekend.

The event was a military timeline, with representation of military and
civilian reenactors from time periods throughout history.

The Military of Rome was represented by Quintus Fabricius of Legio XXIV, MD,
Canada Orientalis Legatus Marcus Darius Firmitus of Legio XII QC, and a
couple of legionaries of Legio X of Detroit, Magnus Laci.

Magnus Laci Provincia citizen L. Valeria Secunda Ianuaria was present with
her husband Paulus, who has just been granted citizenship. They looked just
great; he was togate and Valeria wore a lovely linen orange stola with the
arms graced with fibulae. This couple modeled in the fashion show (pictures
soon!)

Marcus Darius brought his two sons, who wore tunicae and were enjoying the
opportunity to pose in the helmet of their father.

Quintus set up a canope tent, and he, along with the other legionaries
displayed their gear, armour and weaponry to the public, and participated in
the drill maneuvers demonstrations. Nova Roma and Legion XXIV literature
was provided to the public. Valeria and myself had the opportunity to
entertain the public by answering questions when the men were off on
maneuvers, plus questions about fashion, food and other customs.

TV Cameras were present, and many a picture was taken by the public!

Combined Saturday and Sunday, we had a total combined turnout of 11
persons...9 Romans and two Barbarians :) My brother came with me, as well
as my son, and he was good enough to occupy my son, after he decided that
the cannon fire had a little too much 'boom' for him :)

Nine of us engaged in a Roman Feast, consisting of hard boiled eggs,
seasoned pork tenderloin with dipping sauce Hmm!), Pasta with Pesto Sauce,
figs, dates, grapes, melons, breads, an excellent garum made by Valeria, and
of course, Falernian.

By the way, Valeria brought figs and dates! I 'bought' figs and dates, too
:) but I somehow overlooked the fact that I have to bring things with me,
rather than leave them in my fridge.....doh!!!! Silly Po!

After the feast, Valeria performed a ritual in honour of Ceres, then we
enjoyed conversation.

Valeria and Paulus brought pictures of their recent trip to Rome and Greece,
which made for excellent conversation throughout the trip.

My personal thanks to Valeria, who brought me a container of water from the
Sacred Springs at Delphi. I shall treasure this always, and the thought
behind the gift, amica.

Last year, our Provincia presented a grass crown to the reenactment unit
who, in the estimation of our legionaries, displayed exemplary uniforms,
tactics, etc. This year we presented it to a group of Reenactors,
reenacting the Polish army in the 1600's. I learned a good deal of this
period of history from speaking to the reenactors. And, my, the armour, red
uniforms, and yellow boots were absolutely striking. These gentlemen got
their kits and gear together in less than a year, after meeting eachother on
line.

Last year's recipients of this crown, the 1812 Reenactment Unit stationed
throughout the summer at Fort Malden, still have their crown, and engaged in
a surprise formal march and salutum of the Roman contingent Sunday morning.
And, after the Commander addressed me as "Miss Strabo", said that there was
a write up about their winning the Grass Crown in the Parks Canada
Newsletter....cool! We are moving up in the world, quirites! Marcus Darius
Firmitus and myself walked over to speak with them afterwards, and to view
the article.

Oh I could go on and on...

Before the event ended, we were already talking about next year's Fort
Malden, and future Roman Events.

Praefectus Gallio Velius Marcallus, we missed you!! We hope to enjoy your
company next year, with maybe, maybe....Marcus Minucius Audens :)

See what you started, Sir????

Bene valete!

Benefacarius Praefectum Sodalitas Militarium
