Thank you; I appreciate the clarification. I did note that some people
tended to throw their weight (albeit lightly) toward the legal aspects
of this situation, which in my opinion was not called for. However, most
posters' positions on the matter seemed to me to be reasonable ones: a
good man whose conscience causes him to punish himself for his
perception of having done wrong may need a reminder, a vote of
confidence, from his friends and compatriots - and that was what most of
the posts, including that of Senator Minucius, looked like to me.

I must say that I feel proud to be a part of a community such as this
one, where there are many voices both kind and strong, willing to
support their fellows in a difficult moment; I would have added my vote
of confidence to theirs but for the fact that I am a relatively recent
arrival in NR (however, I must say that what I have seen of Tribunus
Davianus here has left nothing but a good impression.)

Edictum Propraetoricium LIII about the confirmation of the right of
the Procurator to issue a "Decretum" in his own name or in the name
of the Tresviri to bestow an Gradus Academicus upon a student of the
Academia

It is proper and correct to delegate the right to bestow Gradi
Academici (Academic exams) to the Procurator Academia Thules and the
Tresviri Academia Thules. As Propraetor Thules I still will keep my
right to issue an intercessio even in these cases.

I. The Procurator Academia Thules will hereby be given the right to
bestow a Gradus Academicus upon a student of the Academia in his own
name or in the name of the Tresviri according to the rules stated in
Edictum Propraetoricium LII and Edictum Propraetoricium LIII issued
by the Propraetor Thules in the year 2755.

II. The Procurator has the right to bestow the Gradus of Baccalaureus
or the Gradus of Magister to a student, when the student's Libellus
or Propositio has been checked by the Caput Generis Doctrinae and
approved of by the Tribunal. The Procurator does this in a "Decretum"
that he publishes at least at the Nova Roma main e-mail list.

III. The Tresviri has the right to bestow the Gradus of Doctor to a
student through the Procurator Academia Thules, when the student's
Dissertatio Doctoralis has been checked by the Caput Generis
Doctrinae and approved of by the Tribunal. The Procurator does this
in a "Decretum" that he publishes in the name of the Tresviri at
least at the Nova Roma main e-mail list.

IV. The Procurator will _not_ have the right to publish any
"Decretum" in any other issue than those concerning the bestowing of
Academic exams.

V. This edictum becomes effective immediately.

Edictum Propraetoricum LII about the different Gradi Academici (=
Academic degrees) and the requirements of the Academic articles for
those Gradi Academici

The Academia Thules ad Studia Romana Antiqua et Nova is developing in
great strides. Our former dreams are becoming goals and the goals are
becoming reality. We had a dream that the Academia in the future
would "produce" students who could take their Academic exams at the
Academia. Now this dream is becoming a goal, a goal that may become a
reality in the near future. Hereby I establish the foundations for
the Gradi Academici of the Academia Thules ad Studia Romana Antiqua
et Nova.

I. The Gradi Academici (= Academic degrees)
The Gradi Academici are the following (with the English name in
parenthesis). They are listed from the lowest to the highest.

Baccalaureus = Bachelor of Arts
Magister = Master of Arts
Doctor = Doctor (e.g. Philosophiae Doctor, Medicinae Doctor, Theologiae Doctor)

II. Each Gradus Academicus must be achieved by presenting a written work.

The work that has to be done in order to get a Gradus Academicus of
Baccalaureus degree = Libellus
The work that has to be done in order to get a Gradus Academicus of
Magister's degree = Propositio
The work that has to be done in order to get a Gradus Academicus of
Doctors degree = Dissertatio Doctoralis

These Gradi must be achieved within a certain Genus Doctrinae or Study line.

III. The definition of how students can receive Academic degrees and
the policy of giving degrees:

III.I. In order to get a Baccalaureus Gradus a student has to
successfully complete all the courses in a Genus Doctrinae that is
titled Minor (Philosophica Minor for example). Also one needs to
produce a Libellus (a Academic article, "paper" or written work of
this level) to show ones abilities.

III.II. In order to get Magister the procedure is similar with study
lines which names contain Major (e.g. Philosophica Major). A student
has also to be Baccalaureus first, further one needs to produce a
Propositio (a Academic article, "paper" or written work of this
level) to show ones abilities.

III.III. In order to become a Doctor one has to be Magister first.
Then he must make an agreement with the Caput Generis Doctrinae about
which subject he has to do his Dissertatio Doctoralis (a Academic
article, "paper" or written work of this level). Once finished the
Academic article will be graded with the grades Probatus (yes) and
Non Probatus (no) and with these two grades the Tribunal either
recommends the student to be granted a Doctorate or does not
recommend it, and the recommendation of the Tribunal is sent to the
Tresviri. If the Tresviri sees it proper they will grant the title of
Doctor to the Magister.

IV. If a student cannot complete his/her courses within the specific
Genus Doctrinae he will not be able to write a work to get a Gradus
(degree).

V. Grades
All Academia articles or tests (except the Dissertatio Doctoralis)
will be graded with the following system. (individual courses can
have other grades if needed.)

5 points = M = Licentia Magna cum Laude = Excellent
4 points = C = Licentia cum Laude = Very good
3 points = P = Licentia Primi Ordinis = Good
2 points = S = Licentia Secundi Ordinis = Mediocre
1 point = T = Licentia Tertii Ordinis = Accepted
0 points = I = Improbatur = Failed

The grades should be contributed with Gauss-function like, that means
that most of the grades should be between 2-3 points, 1 and 4 being
lesser and 0 and 5 very rare, with the following approximative
percentages:

0 = 5%
1 = 10%
2 = 30%
3 = 30 %
4 = 15 %
5 = 10 %

VI. The requirements for the produced Academic articles
(Baccalaureus, Magister, Doctor) will be:

VI.I. The papers should be written in whatever time-frame student
wants to use for the work. Recommendation would be within a year of
starting the assignment, but this is just a recommendation, not rule
in anyway. The theme of the paper should be constructed in a way that
it is:

VI.I.I. not similar to a previous Academic article (written work)
that have been accepted (The Academia web-site will contain an
on-line archive of previous papers), questions about similarity is
arranged in a way that it is Caput Generis Doctrinae who initially
checks the validity of the theme, and takes it into account when
rating the paper(written work).

Furthermore the Tresviri has the power to declare the paper (written
work) to have Improbatur in a case of too much similarity to any
previous paper(s). The paper has to be directed towards finding,
evaluation or researching some new facts, rather that reciting old
facts.

VI.I.II. The theme of the Academic article must be approved of by the
Caput Generis Doctrinae

VI.I.III. The length of the Academic article should be approximative
the following:
Baccalaureus 20 A4 pages (14000 - 16000 words)
Magister 40 A4 pages (28000 - 32000 words)
Doctor 80 A4 pages (56000 - 64000 words)

The page settings should be so that there will be approximately
700-800 words in a page.

VII. The Academic article will rated with the scale presented earlier
and the percentages should also follow the previously presented
directives.

VIII. The Academic Gradus (degree) will be given only after either
the Procurator (Baccalaureus, Magister) or the Tresviri (Doctor)
accepts it

IX. The contents of a Academic article, length of it and the approval
of it are thus regulated. The rest will be the responsibility of each
student. How many students will be given a degree is also regulated.
The requirements for different degrees are constructed in a way that
the first degree is quite easy to obtain while the others will be
harder.

X. The number of courses in a Genus Doctrinae shall be:

X.I. Minor: a minimum of 3 courses with a total minimum of 30 lessons
(30 weeks)
X.II. Maior: a minimum of 6 courses with a total minimum of 60
lessons (60 weeks)

The maximum length will not be not implemented as subjects vary so much.

XI. This edictum becomes effective immediately.

Given July 24th, in the year of the consulship of Marcus Octavius
Germanicus and Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix 2755 AUC.

me is interesting. However, until you are able or willing to inform me
of the exact name of the unwanted spam which I have rejected and blocked
(I am pleased to hear that the blocking service actually works) then I
can do nothing about it. Perhaps a "Snail Mail" letter might be
appropriate. I have often used them in the past for important messages
and although delivery is somewhat slow, this medium seems to work rather
well.

Respectfully;

Salve,

This is the IV (or V) translation to Portuguese of the Nova Roma documents. The Articles of Incorporation.

The html text is in my office: http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/lafaustus/trad/incorp.html

The Decuria of Interpreters, with the sponsor and blessings of our honorable Curator Araneum Octavius Germanicus, has the objective to do a Nova Roma for many languages and its citizens. Everyone is invited to help. Translations are a lonely work - "Fight the words is the vainest fight...", how said the poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade.
