With this email, I start the groundwork for a school
which will teach citizens of Nova Roma the ways of
warfare. This school will be partly online as the
Academia of Thule, but for those of adventurous heart,
once a quarter we will hold an in-person, hands-on
training day where you will push miniatures around to
conduct "wargames", get a hands on feel of weapons and
equipment (provided by one of our local Legio), and
you will be trained in the ways of combat with the two
main weapons of the Legio, the pilum and the gladius.

In addition, we will begin construction at the end of
the year, of either a fully functional catapult or
ballista.

Also, for those of you in Ohio and surrounding area, w
are forming a branch of the Adrian Empire, which is
similar to the SCA, but puts more emphasis on arts and
sciences, and instead of sticks, you use live steel.
(It is actually a lot safer than SCA combat.)

If you are interested in getting involved with the
production of any of these projects, please feel free
to contact me.

I remember a post from a while back about someone working on a
national anthem for Nova Roma. I was curious as to the progress of
this project. I was also thinking about asking a local musician for
help on our national anthem if the need arose.

Salve,Cai Flavi Diocletiani

I am glad you know Aternum and maybe other
cities(Sulmo,Teate,
Pinna,Interamnia,Corfinium,...etcetera)in the"IV
Regio" as Emperor Augustus nominated the Land/Region
that is today called "Abruzzo"(Italia).This land was,
over 3000 years ago, the place were groups of peoples
of Greek_Spartan descents settled; they were then
called Italic Peoples, the most famous of which, the
Sabini ( Quirini), by merging with the Latins,
founded Roma.
Only a few people know that the newly founded City was
called Roma in honor of Romolus but the original name
of the people living there was "Quirini"(not Romans)
in honor of the Sabini-Quirini people whose King,
Titus Tatius, co-ruled the City toghether with
Romolus.
I noted that in our Nova Roma it is often given more
importance to the influx of the Etruscan Culture and
Civilization(that, anyhow, is not to be neglected)
than to those of the Italics.
In this regard I have found an interesting Site
(www.sanniti.info)on the Samnites(Italic People,
offspring of Sabini)where you can see how advanced and
refined(have a look at the golden Armour Shield,look
at the"Legio Linteata", Corazza Linteata)was their
civilization!

Master Marcus Cornelius Tiberius;

In answer to your subject question, I have two books which have pictures
of recreations of the buildings of ancient Rome. Both books are in
color. The first is:

"Rome of the Caesars", Leonardo B. Dal Maso, Bonechi-Edizioni {{II
Turismo}}, Via dei Rustici, 5 - 50122 FIRENZE;

This book has two pages of "Coins of the Roman Empire" in color, and
quite a few photographs of ruins in Rome and other cities, with pictures
of the details of the same structures taken from the extensive
reconstruction model of "Ancient Rome in the Age of Constantine" by I.
Gizmondi which is located in the Museum of Roman Civilization. There
are views of:

--The Palatine;

--The Roman Forum;

--Temple of the Dioscuri;

--House of the Vestals;

--Temple of Vesta;

--Basilica of Maxentius;

--Campidoglio;

--Pantheon;

--Hadrian's Vills -- Private Library;

--Column of Trajan;

--Column of Marcus Aurelius;

--Forum of Caesar with the Temple of Venus;

--Forum of Augustus with the Temple of Mars;

--Forum of Vespasian with the Temple of Peace;

--Forum of Nerva;

--Colosseum;

--Circus Maximus;

--Circus of Caligula and Nero;

--Stadium of Domitian;

--Theatre of Marcellus;

--Tiberine Island and Bridges;

--The Baths of Antonius;

--The Baths of Diocletian;

--The Mausoleum of Augustus;

--The Mausoleum of Hadrian;

--The Claudian Aqueduct;

--Ostia -- Apartment Buildings;

--Tivoli -- Hadrian's Villa.

The second book is:

"Rome, Past and Present", R. A. Staccioli, Vision Publications, Nova
Zincografica Fiorentina S.R.I.

This book shows various views of Roman Ruins with clear overlays showing
how the ruins looked when they were first built.
The views are:

--The Colosseum;

--The Forum of Caesar;

--The Forum Square;

--The Temples of Saturn and Concord;

--The Temple of Diefied Caesar;

--The Temple of Vesta and the Arch of Augustus;

--The House of the Vestal Virgins;

--The Temple of Divius Romulus;

--The Bascilica of Maxentius;

--The Circus Maximus;

--The Temples of the Forum Boarium;

--The Theatre of Marcellus;

--The Tiber Island;

--The Mausoleum of Hadrian;

--The Pantheon;

--The Via Appia;

--The Catacombs (various);

I hope that this list may be of some assistance
to you.

SALVE PUBLICUS POPOLI ROMANI ET AMICII!

I would like to know the purpose of such
a task. Do we not have more pressing issues to
accomplish? We do not even have land. And yet we are
to have a national anthem? I humbly ask that we
continue with issues of outward growth. Such as
provincial temples and gatherings. Issues that truly
will breathe life into our culture once again. And
incorporate it into current society. Although there
are pockets of Romanized culture in Europe today. As
well as in other parts of the world, there is still a
need to bring us all together in a manner that is more
of an agressive posture (in regards to being in
current macronational societies) than being passively
contemplating a mere song that would attempt to
capture such a struggle.

Being retired Army, I feel that the Geneva convention rules do not
apply to those captured under arms against the US:

1. There was no declared war
2. none of the captured criminals was wearing a uniform
3. none of the captured criminals was wearing any badge of rank
4. none of the captured criminals was enlisted in any armed force
of any nation, as is recognized by modern day reckoning.

Therefore, the geneva convention rules do not apply to them.

I just hope the military tribunals will begin as quickly as possible
and the sentences meted out as expeditiously as possible.

As the work with my Aedilship has gone on, the ambitions of myself

Salvete, Luci Quirine Vesta et alii,

I reviewed the website you recommended about the Samnites. I´m sorry but I cannot understand Italian, but it´s still worth to visit. There are fine pictures. Some I know from the men-at-arms book "Early roman armies". I have deep respect for this ancient italian cultures, including the etruscans.

During my visit in Italy in 1999 I visited the necropolis of Cerverteri, and the museum in Chiusi (Clusium). I spent 2 days at Lago Trasimeno, and visited the old battlefield. Later, I visited the ancient site of Veji, too. This was a very beautiful day, it was sunny and hot, with a light wind blowing, and in the surrounding valleys the air was comfortable. It was very quiet, and my girlfriend and I were the only visitors. Only the ruins on the top were as hot as an oven.

Thank you for your interest and for encouraging words of Pompeia.

> At my web about celtic languages! The names occurring in the coins

dialect of Boii.

The initial pre-home of Boii was modern Bohemia /Boiohaeum/. So, I
would prefer they to be classified as Celtic dialect than Gaulish
i.e. related to the territory of modern France. Well, please, do not
take so seriously what I have written. I am just joking.

>

Definitly images were influenced by Romans, anyway the weight
standards shows on previous Macedonian influence too. During the 1
century B.C. the Romans were the power to be respected even in the
remote from the Roman borders countries.
The previous issues of Celtic coins do imitate tetradrachmes of
Philip II. and Alexander III. of Macedon, but their artificial
quality is lower than later coin issues.

Personnally I like the idea of these terrorist prisoners paraded through
the streets, in chains, as indications of the victor's triumph

(simlar to what was done when American soldiers were being dragged
through the streets in Somalia)

and then imprison them, and sort them for crusifixition, sending them to
the games as food for the beasts, or enroll them as the lowest grade
slave gladiators.

I should like to see the bravery, arrogance, and religious zeal
displayed by these "animals" while safe in thier hills; displayed before
a hungary leapord in an arena -- the "jihad fighter" having no arms
besides those provided by nature. I wonder what effect his words,
sponsored by those who hate all but those of thier own faith and
beliefs, would have upon a beast intent upon his dinner!!!!

While I freely admit that my faith is not probably up to such a test, I
would very likely bet, that their much vaunted zeal will quickly break
down at such a occurance. At least, it would be an interesting test,
and certainly no less fair than beating women, with wire whips, for
showing thier ankles, or hanging men for minor infractions of a
Draconion Law imposed upon innocent people.

In many ways, the Romans had some good ideas, and as we have said in the
Gladitorial School on many occasions, nothing was wasted, even the dead
bodies of the gladiators who failed before the Games Official, were cut
up in a butchery, far below the ravening crowds, to feed the ever
hungary beasts of the arena. Somehow the idea sounds more appealing
when applied to a certain class of people in today's modern world.

Salve,

We want people to be active in Nova Roma, but quiet
often when someone has an idea or wants to do
something that would add a little something special to
Nova Roma, we get post like this.

Why not have a national anthem? If someone is willing
to achieve this goal, why not go for it. We are
working on land ideas and census ideas and growing our
nation. So a national anthem may not be a Big, Weighty
issue, but it is an admirable one none the less.

Thanks

Well those terrorists don't deserve any bit of
coverage by the Geneva Convention. Plus it drives me
up the wall when these human rights groups start
complaining based on two pictures. THEY ARE PRISONERS
they don't get to romp around freely as they please.
Plus a couple of weeks ago I saw the British goverment
complaining about it. Well they are not one to talk
based on their treatment of IRA Irish nationalists.
But they would just call them terrorists too so. Long
Kesh was worse than Camp X-Ray. We should not concern
ourselves with the humanity of this ordeal. There was
certainly no humanity shown towards those at WTC, and
the Pentagon. The human rights activists would be
screaming for heads if their family members were
murdered. This is not a matter that US citizens
should be concerned with. Yes they are 70 miles off
our coast. But if they run towards Cuba they'll be
blown up by Cuban mines. If they run the other way
the sharks will get them. It's a military matter so
we should leave it with the military.
vale,
Quintus Cornelius Caesar
