Subject: [novaroma] A curiosity about the large scale of ancient Roman trade

Salvete cives NovaeRomae:

In the ancient city of Funan (Phnam), in the delta of the Mekong river, coins with the image of Antoninus Pius (138-161) and Marcus Aurelius (161-180). It also seems that Funan, that in that period, was part of the Champa kingdom, was a major harbor to occident.

Also the "history of Liang" (chapter 54) mentions the frequent visits of Chinese Merchant to Funan. And also is mentioned, a Roman embassy sent to Luoyang (the Chinese Capital) in 166 AD composed by Romans citizens (mainly Syrian traders from Palmyra). Other embassies were sent in 226 to Nankín, and 284 to Luoyang.

These contacts by no means were a exclusivity of Roma; Chinese sources mentions the name of a Parthian 'king' Man Qu:

"In the thirteenth year (101 AD), the king of Anxi (Parthia) named Man Qu [Pacorus II? circa 79-105 AD] again offered lions, and some of the large birds of Tiaozhi (Characene and Susiana), which people call `Anxi birds' [ostriches]."

In fact the name don't correspond to the parthian king (by that period, Pacorus II) but of the persian "king" Manchihr I (vassal of the king Pacorus II). Al so in post-Roman times we find notices of the contact between China and Occident:

553 emabssies from Heftalites (White Huns) and from Sasanids Persians.
558 embassies from Heftalites and Persia
560 embassy form the kingdom of Kucha
564 embassy from Sogdiana (Samarkand region)
567 embassy from Bujara (Amu Daria Valley)
574 embassy form Khotan (tribute of horses)
578 embassy form Persia

Archaelogical findins also have revealed the permanent establisment of Roman traders and craftsmen in India along all the coast (east and west, around 150 AD) at the enclavements of: Minnager, Bharukaccha, Kalyan, Muziris, Kolxoi, Produke and Massalia (the most oriental Roman factory in India).

T Labienus Fortunatus Quiritibus SPD

I pray to the patron Goddesses of my gens to aid me in the year to come. I
pray that Discordia shall limit Herself to fostering only healthy competition
among Nova Romans, and that She aids me to see to the heart of any disputes
that may come before me. I pray that Fides shall remind me at all times of the
oath I am about to swear and of the duties of my office. I pray that Fortuna
shall smile upon the Res Publica, granting to us a year of growth and
prosperity. Tonight, I shall offer incense and wine that these things may come
to pass.

I, Titus Labienus Fortunatus (Conrad Davis), do hereby solemnly swear to uphold
the honor of Nova Roma, and to act always in the best interests of the people
and the Senate of Nova Roma.

As a magistrate of Nova Roma, I, Titus Labienus Fortunatus, swear to honor the
Gods and Goddesses of Rome in my public dealings, and to pursue the Roman
Virtues in my public and private life.

I, Titus Labienus Fortunatus, swear to uphold and defend the Religio Romana as
the State Religion of Nova Roma and swear never to act in a way that would
threaten its status as the State Religion.

I, Titus Labienus Fortunatus, swear to protect and defend the Constitution of
Nova Roma.

I, Titus Labienus Fortunatus, further swear to fulfill the obligations and
responsibilities of the office of praetor to the best of my abilities.

On my honor as a Citizen of Nova Roma, and in the presence of the Gods and
Goddesses of the Roman people and by their will and favor, do I accept the
position of praetor and all the rights, privileges, obligations, and
responsibilities attendant thereto.

Valete

Candidates For Praetor;

My sincere congratulations to Senator / Praetor Titus Labienus
Fortunatus for winning the hard-won fight against two willing and
competative opponents.

I also thank both Senator Quintus Fabius Maximus and Citizen Decia
Sepulchatia for thier obvious interest in the Political Side of Nova
Roma, and for thier Candidacy in this running. I would hope that
neither would be discouraged with this outcome, and will stand again for
office in the future.

Meanwhile, my sincerest congratulations to Senator Fortunatus, and I
look forward in the coming year to working with you in the Senate and as
a Member of Praetor Strabo's Assensai Staff.

Respectfully;
