Ave, Pompeiia Cornelia!

I have read the Pilum's article on the rowers and have a comment or
two on it. I agree that the rowers were likely NOT slaves but trained
members of the Navy. That point is not in debate with me.
"Ben-Hur", the book, was written in the mid-19th Century by Genrl.
Lew Wallace. At the time he was a very well-trained Union general and
classically educated. Therein was the problem when he decided to
become an author. As an Army General his grasp of the Ancient Roman
Navy might have been a bit shallow. Furthermore, historical research
on the Roman Navy was likely not as well done then unlike the study
done on the Legions. I would contend that the passage of Centuries
and the Rise of Christianity would have precluded any serious study
and was likely subject to the prejudices of Judeo-Christian views
rather than Roman views based on fact. The 'slave' minorities slant
and 'oppressed' peoples slant most prominent in that work hide any
enlightened view of the Roman world, in my opinion.
While "Ben-Hur" remains one of my favorite films for views of the
Roman world it is, as the article so well stated, rife with
inaccuracies. I find myself, with every watching, marveling at the
religious bias (against Rome) that permeates the film. The 'fat,
corrupt Romans' line is getting mighty stale. Perhaps I'll raise
hackles here but the bias is VERY PRONOUNCED.
Still, one has to remember that 'Ben-Hur', both film and book, are
products of their respective times and need to be regarded as such. I
regard them as entertainment and not serious studies of Rome and Her
world. I agree that there are more than enough truly serious scholars
of Rome and things Roman that H-wood needn't look to hacks for a good
story line with historical plausibility. We have very good experts
here in Nova Roma. Sadly, H-wood is not interested in fact, only in
the almighty dollar. Rome has paid the price for it too, I believe.
My views and comments on this particular article. My intent was
merely to express them, not offend.

Vale!

Um.. sorry..

"gob-smacked".. literally, "hit in the mouth".. it's that state of utter surprise when you're standing there with your mouth open as though someone has hit you.

I suppose I could have said "pleasantly very surprised" but it really doesn't have the same ring to it.

Subject: [novaroma] Medical History?
From: "Chantal G. Whittington" <aerdensrw@yahoo.com>
Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 15:04:39 -0800 (PST)
Salvete, omnes!

I am a citizen pending approval and have been reading
this list with interest since submitting my
application.

I checked the Sodalites list, but I don't see anything
with my particular Roman interest covered. So...Is
anyone on this list interested in Roman medical
history?

I'm interested in such things as--medical ethics and
philosophy (a Roman healer's attitude toward the
practice of medicine), leges, educational system,
surgical practices and innovations, forensic
anthropology, archaeology, physical examination
procedures, and writings.

If this is your cup of tea, please write me!

Valete,

Renata (might be Livia, Corva, or might be Gaudiana
someday, if they let me!) :)
aka Chantal Gaudiano Whittington

---Salve Chantal et Ali:

I am most interested in this area of Roma antiquita. I am a nurse
with an interest in the ancient medicines, from Hippocrates, Galen
upward, the use of herbs, and the prevailing medical theories of
antiquita.

Anyone else out there interested in this sort of thing? I know
someone (was it you, Salix Astur?) who talked about putting together a
health and wellbeing sodalitas last year.

Perhaps all of these related medical/health topics would make
a pretty neat mailing list or sodalitas.

Personally, I am too busy to be much of an organizing factor right
now, but I would certainly join and contribute if someone wanted to
take on the initial establishment of a mailing list, etc.

Thanks for writing, Chantal. And I look forward to your becoming a
citizen on Nova Roma.

Valete!

Pompeia Cornelia
Praetor
