Salvete,

I'm probably the last person in NR to see this thing, but can't help but pass
it along just in case!

A few months ago a software company put out an 'alternate history'
commercial, in which Rome never fell. I don't catch that much TV and missed
it while it was on the air. :(

However, Quintus from Legion XX just put out a newsletter which includes the
URL of a place that has the commercial online:

http://www.ca.com/media/tv_empire.ram

I couldn't help but exclaim "Aaaawwww, that's CUTE!" and I hope anyone who
hasn't seen it already enjoys it.

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus

Salvete,

Great newsletter. I especially like the Watling Street
article. I actually lived right on the Edgware Rd for
almost three years and I never realised it was formed
from the original Watling St. Fascinating!!

I just looked at it and think this is GREAT!

I signed up for the course offered despite my deployment here in
Cuba, and would gladly encourage all newbies and older civs who have
been around a while and want to take part to go ahead and sign up.

So how is everyone?

I am interested in joining a roman reenactment. But I live in
California. Do you know of any groups from California? Or do I
have to make one? I know how to reenact because I have been
doing civil war reenacting for 2 years this is going to be my third
year. I want to do this because it looks interesting to me to join.

thanks alot maximus

Ave Marcus,

I'm proud to say that Aussie re-enactors did that one! It was shot in Sydney, but most of the roman legionaries (all bar one I believe) were from our group in Brisbane, Pax Romana. We had a fabulous time at the shoot, and the people shooting the ad were totally gobsmaked by the enthusiasm of the re-enactors.

There is a longer version of the ad, which I'm told aired in Uk/US but I've never seen! If anyone happens to have a copy of it I would really appreciate a look!

One of the funniest things that happened on set was while we were filming the scene in which "Caesar" makes his big speech. He was meant to make his speech and we were meant to cheer wildly at everything he said - not too hard! But the first time he came out and said "Hail Romans!!", the re-enactor audience responded as one, with a big salute and a rousing "Ave, Caesar!!!"... the guy playing Caesar got the fright of his life and nearly jumped out of his skin! I guess they weren't expecting that response.. anyway he calmed down after a while and as you can see it all turned out great.

You only get to see it for a split second on the short ad, but they actually went to the trouble to re-create a modern London as though Rome never fell.. a red double-decker bus with Latin ads on the side, all the street signage was in Latin and even a fake "Dogmatix" tube stop. All very silly but appealing in a strange way! Even though it was totally not historically accurate, I really liked the look of the sleek black helicopter with "SPQR" and the roman eagles on the side.

I'm glad you enjoyed the ad! We certainly enjoyed making it!

Thank you very much for your kind words, consul.

Seeing that you share our enthusiasm with this project is an Extremely
Good Thing :-). I hope that you will not refrain from making
suggestions in order to improve the Academia.
