Salvete Quirites

Im mt term as Aedilis Plebeius, i spend some time to
build a "Fasti" novoromani, that is, a complete list
of officers of Nova Roma (who included magistrates,
vigintisexviri, provincial officers, priests,
senatores, lictores, scribes), who lies at:
www.angelfire.com/scifi/nrbras2/nr2.htm
Perhaps this list is not very beautiful to see, but my
emphasis was in the data, you know...
The list is not complete, and there are some "holes"
and uncertain data too.

Some statistics:

In Nova Roma, the seat of Consul was occupied in 12
different opportunities (below, n.op), by 9 different
people (n.dp); of then, 10 were consul ordinarius
(ord), and 2 suffectus (suf).

Statistic for all magistratures (from Consul to
Quaestor):
n.op n.dp ord suf
Cos: 12 9 10 2
Cen: 8 7 5 3
Pr : 10 = 9 1
AC : 9 = = =
AP : 6 = = =
TP : 10 = 8 2
Q : 26 20 25 1

Some curiosities:
-NR never began a year with two Aediles Plebei;
-only one of the 5 ex-Censores were in position the
full 2 years;
-only one was Censor 2 times; NR never know a Aedile
suffectus;
-the record for consecutive office holdings is of
Patricia Cassia, Quaestrix 4 consecutive terms;
-2 magistrates were deposed and 3 named in
Dictatorship;
-in their first year of existence, NR doesnt saw a
Aedilis Plebeius, or a Tribunus Plebis;
-in four oportunities, somebody holds two
magistratures at same time.

ex Aedilis Plebeius

Subject: [novaroma] ATTN [Religio Romana] ante diem III Idus Ianuarias (January 11th)
From: "Antonio Grilo" <amg@cris.inesc.pt>
Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 12:22:18 -0000
ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS PONTIFEX OMNIBUS CIVIBVS SALVTEM
Today is one a "dies nefastus publicus" (NP), a day of special religious
observance when legal business cannot take place.

Today is the first day of the Carmentalia, a two day festival in honour of
Carmentis, a Goddess of childbirth and Prophecy. Into her shrine, it is
unlawful to bear leather, for it reminds death and the slaughter of animals
(Ovidius, "Fasti", 1.628ss). The prayers offered to her invoke the
mysterious Carmentes (Goddesses Porrima and Postverta) who preside the
birth. Porrima presides the birth when the baby's head comes first.
Postversa presides the birth when the feet of the baby come first (Aulus
Gellus, "Attic Nights", 16.16.4). Some interpret those Goddesses as
presiding destiny, one presiding over the past and the other over the
future, being thus associated with Ianus to whom the month of Ianuarius is
sacred (Ovidius, "Fasti", 1.65; Macrobius, Saturnalia, 1.7.20). Today, the
Flamen Carmentalis, assisted by the Pontifices, offers sacrifice at the
shrine of Carmenta, which stays next to the Porta Carmentalis near
the Capitol. The two days of the Carmentalia are separated by an impair
number of days (the second day is on January 15), which is specially
pleasing to the Gods.

Today is also the festival of Iuturna, a water-nymph who presides over river
Numicus and also believed to preside over a spring (Lacus Iuturnae) in the
south-west corner of the Forum at the foot of the Capitol. This spring
included a pool and a shrine, and its water was used in official sacrifices.
Arnobius says that Iuturna is the spouse of Fontus (Arnobius, "Adversus
Nationes", 3.29). She is also linked to Castor and Pollux as she is said to
have watered the horses of the Dioscuri at her pool after they brought the
news of the victory at Lake Regillus in 404 BC, and again after the victory
over Macedon in 168 BC.
Today, those charged with the adduction of waters celebrate the birthday of
her temple, at the place where the Aqua Virgo (Virgin Water) aqueduct stands
at the Campus Martius (the Aqua Virgo was built by Agrippa in 19 BC). The
temple was built by a Lutatius Catulus, probably the consul of 241 BC, or
otherwise the victor over the Cimbri in 101 BC.

The month of Ianuarius is sacred to Ianus.

Di vos incolumes custodiant
