Pukulpa Tjunguringkunytja - by Diana James

We walk together on sacred ground. Black feet, white feet, treading softly
on the land. Mother Kuniya moves beneath our feet, the Tjukurpa/Creation Law
breathes life into the sacred landscape of Uluru. White guides and Anangu
guides, working together. We stand firm in the laws of the two cultures,
keeping the cultural and natural heritage strong. Our feet on sacred ground
our hands reach up to hold the new circle of life; The campfire, the
waterhole, where people of all cultures can meet and share.

Salvete Omnes,

There are currently two new models of shrines
available at
http://www.caesar.cityslide.com

There is a Mithraem and a non-dedicated shrine
currently available. These low introductory prices
will not last long!

Commissions are welcome.

The shrines are entirely hancrafted with original
artwork, carvings and various ancient motifs.
The next model due out is dedicated to the Egyptian
Netjeru. It is currently not dedicated to a specific
Netjer. Anyone interested in Kemet Orthodoxy may
request or inquire as to details of these shrines.

Next slated is a Lararium possibly with a sculpted
Lars motif.

These shrines are waterproof and I will soon be
offering fountains in the ancient styles.

Let's all patronize our Macellum, there are many other
products besides coins and flags available from
various vendors.

Remember, 15% of the gross of your purchase from me
goes to Nova Roma.

Current models are available for shipment right away.

Subject: [novaroma] a thought on land
From: mark zona <pitdog2002@-------->
Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2001 10:28:42 -0700 (PDT)
Salve quirites!

I have been giving some thought to the Nova Roma land
issue for some time, and I would like to share my
thoughts.
First of all, I would like to say that I am in no way
opposed to the acquisition of land by Nova Roma as an
organization, and believe it is a dream worth
pursuing.
However, I feel that distinction must be made between
public and private land acquisition.
On the one hand, we have the dream of a piece of land
that is owned by Nova Roma. The Senate would purchase
the land with monies by Nova Roma and declare it a
sovereign nation. All would have a near equal share in
such a land acquisition as it would have been
purchased with Roman money collected thru tax and
contribution.
On the other hand, for the most part, the land of most
nations is not owned by the government. It is
privatley held. I am an American citizen, but the US
government does not own my little acre of land that I
live on. I do. In fact, very little land is owned by
the government. Only enough to suit its administrative
purposes, no more. If the government has excess land,
it either sells it off to the private sector or
delares it a preserved area.
So is Nova Roma's goal of land all communally held or
is it to be redistributed to private ownership? I
imagine it is to be communally held.
Consider the evolution of the way nations form. People
of similar religion, language, culture, and location
acquire land and agree to band together for a common
goal. Protection against hostile neighbors, commerce,
building projects, and such. But their land never
passes to public ownership or government ownership. If
it does, it is only a very small amount. The private
individual owner contributes at most a very small
amount of land. Because it is in the best interest of
these private landowners to protect there own land,
they will band together to fight against invaders to
protect it, or to add to their land by banding
together to conquer other lands. Because it is in
there best interest to do so, they will submit to
taxation in order to build roads, bridges and such.
They would also want some of that tax money to be used
to build public temples as a way for the nation as a
whole to invoke the gods just as they have private
larariums at home to invoke the lars, as this also is
in there best interest to do so.
Now I do not believe that anyone is going to go beyond
there own personal best interest to acquire land for
Nova Roma. In other words, I do not believe that there
is going to be a large plot of land donated or a large
sum of money contributed to this purpose. If I wanted
to build a temple to Jupiter on 5 acres of land I
owned, I would be very hesitant to put it in the hands
of others. I would want to handle the project as a
private citizen of Nova Roma and not turn ownership or
control to a governing body. I would want my resources
and my land to be used my way, and would not risk
seeing my dream of building a temple to Jupiter
suddenly bogged down in a Senatorial debate on whether
we should build the temple to all the gods or just
Jupiter, or should we not sell the land and use the
money for a better location. I believe that people act
in there own interest and that is the way most anyone
would handle that situation.
So the way I see it, Nova Roman land is not something
that Nova Roma owns. It is existing land that is
privatley owned by the citizens of Nova Roma, tiny as
those pieces of land may be. The citizens of Nova Roma
are banded together by common culture and religion,
and together as a people are under the protection of
the Roman gods. In that sense, Nova Roma is a nation.
A nation with land privately owned by its citizens. A
nation santioned by the gods of Rome.
If you have a lararium, and if you look to the gods
and goddesses of Rome, and you look at the land in
which your lararium stands, and the land the lars
protects,
then you are standing on Roman soil.
You are standing in Nova Roma.

Valete!

Zeno

Do not forget that we are getting together at Grigg's
Reservoir next weekend October 13th for an informal
reunion of all the local Nova Roma members. Everyone
bring a dish of something, we're going to have a pot
luck picnic, play some games, and get to know each
other. We'll also be planning for a major NR event to
be held here this spring. Our Provincial Governor
will be flying in for the gathering, Quintus is coming
down from Cleveland and setting up a small display,
and the weather promises to be decent to us.
:o)Please contact me offlist if you are planning to
come, so I can get a rough estimate of the number of
people in attendance.

Curator M. Octavius Germanicus Civibus Omnibus SPD,

I have added a useful and exciting new feature to our web site.

At http://www.novaroma.org/bin/calendar/cview
you may view a calendar of Nova Roma events, holidays, and such.

If anyone has events to submit, mail me the information. I am
especially interested in getting all the religious festivals in
place (and verifying the classification of each day as Fastus,
Nefastus, etc.), so I ask the Pontifices to please look into this.

Valete, Octavius.

Once again, I applaud your initiative. My only suggestion would be to
follow the traditional Roman dating for each day (e.g.; today it would
be pridies Nonis Octobris, instead of the 6th of October).

Ave,

I think both dates styles should be shown. Remember we have alot of
people who might not know very much about ancient Rome. I think if we
have both styles we can be a resource for those individuals who are
curious as well as those who are very serious about following the Roman
Calender.

Respectfully,

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix

Thanks!

I decided against putting the correct name of the day on the month-view
page for two reasons: it is much larger, visually, than the simple
ordinal number; and also, it's much less understood. Most people, when
looking at any square on that calendar, would not understand how the
label "ante diem III Kal November" relates to some day this month.

However, if you "zoom in" on one day by following any of the links,
the title on that single day's page does include the proper Roman
date (as best I know it!)

Also, I've added the event you just announced.

Vale, O.

I hadn't realized that one could "zoom in" :-). That certainly includes
the traditional nomenclature. I would say the choice is certainly
yours, but maybe there could be some way to follow censor Sulla's
suggestion of having *both* nomenclatures indicated through the use of
traditional Latin acronymes. Today could be registered as
"6 P·D·NON·OCT", while the 25th of October could be indexed as
"25 A·D·VIII·K·NOV".

As I said, the choice is yours.
