230 million library opens in Alexandria, throwback to that of ancient times
By SARAH EL DEEB 10/1/01 6:11 PM

Alexandria, Egypt (AP) -- The $230 million library of Alexandria opened for
a trial period Monday not far from where Egyptian ruler Ptolemy I Soter's
renowned original stood in antiquity.

Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, delivered the
inaugural speech, saying the Biblioteca Alexandrina should be a "window for
Egypt to the world and a window for the world to Egypt."

"How important it is for us to know each other and open up to one another,
especially after the grave events that we have witnessed," she said,
referring to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Mubarak has long promoted the Biblioteca and chairs its board of trustees.

The drive to rebuild a world-class library in Alexandria began in 1990.
Construction was repeatedly delayed and the seven-story building was
completed more than two years late and $30 million over budget.

The trial opening, which should last no longer than six weeks, will test the
computers, audiovisual facilities, a hall for braille readers, chambers for
scholars and conference rooms.

A major concern is the shortage of books. Built to accommodate at least 4
million works, the library has only 200,000 so far.

Moustafa al-Abbadi, a historian of the city credited with being the first to
propose building the library, said its management must embark on a major
purchasing campaign.

An international library is "not viable unless it holds a minimum of 1
million titles, and that is a modest number," he said.

The formal opening of the library is set for April 23 -- U.N. International
Book Day.

The Egyptian ruler Ptolemy I Soter began the Great Library of Alexandria in
the grounds of his royal palace in about 295 B.C. The site is not known, but
recent excavations have revealed the palace grounds reached as far as the
waterfront abutting the new library. The modern builders dug up ancient
mosaics and these are displayed in the new library.

For 250 years, the Great Library served as a center for scholars from across
the Mediterranean. It contained 500,000 scrolls, including the originals of
the plays of Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles. Ptolemy III asked other
statesmen to lend him their books to copy. In a throwback, Spain has agreed
to donate copies of its old Arabic manuscripts to the new library.

For the new building, Egypt has retrieved a large collection of manuscripts
from old Alexandrian libraries and an important collection of scientific
manuscripts from the 10th to 18th centuries.

The bulk of the Great Library was believed destroyed by fire in 48 B.C. when
Julius Caesar attacked Alexandria harbor in his war against Rome. The
architects of the modern library have incorporated a highly sensitive
anti-fire system in the building.

Salve Amuli Claudi: It is good to have you back my friend. Yes much
has happened since you left. And some of our noble citizens have been
called up to serve in the campaign against terrorism and defend our
way of life in the western world. We wish them good fortune, and pray
they return to us safely.
I know that you have much E-mail to catch up with. Pompeia
Cornelia and I have left some messages for you that I know you will
want to attend to. Pompeia would like to appoint you to the position
of Legatus if you are willing, and I am in total agreement. We feel
that you are most worthy and deserving of this position. If you are
willing, that will be great, and I extend sincere congratulations.
Good to have you back. I was beginning to get a bit concerned.
But I suppose that I shouldn't have let myself get worried. I guess I
should be punished with twelve lashes from a wet noodle.:)
My best wishes to you.
Bene vale, ... Appius Cato

Salvete omnes,

I would like you to take notice of my absence during the next week.

As a flutist, it is part of my work to sometimes travel and give concerts
in different countries.

This is now again one of those times. I will be away on a concert roundtrip
around Hungary and will not be able to communicate. I will be back again
on October 14th.

Valete, Tiberius Annaeus Otho
