Subject: [novaroma] A question on elections.

Salvete,

Forgive my ignorance citizens, but I'd be grateful if someone could point out to me why the voting on the current proposals are taking place via the centuries as opposed to the tribes.

My understanding is that as the republic progressed, the centuries were increasingly consulted soley for the elections of consuls and praetors, whilst the tribes were more likely to be consulted for the voting on leges in addition to voting for the more junior magistracies.

Is this reversal, such as it is, merely out of deference to the early republic or am I simply missing something from our own constitution?

Apologies if this issue has been raised before - I'm new here.

Valete,

Decimus Iunius Silanus.

Salve,

I'm off to Washington DC tomorrow, and I won't return until the 15th. I'll
be seeing the sites of my nations capitol and getting some actual sleep.
Four whole days without having to hear my mother go "wa wawa wa waaaaa" in
the morning will be quite enjoyable. I probably won't read email until the
17th, or the 21st, if then. If you don't hear from me in three months time,
please make sure CNN is paying more attention to my disappearance than to any
affairs with married congressmen three times my age I may decide to have
while there.

Have a nice week,

In this specific instance, because the major lex being voted on (the law
changing the rules by which the Comitia Centuriata votes) must be enacted by
the Comitia Centuriata itself. One Comitia cannot change the rules of
another. The other two Comitia have already adopted similar changes to their
rules; this law merely brings the Comitia Centuriata in line with the
others.

The vote amending the privacy law is included merely because the vote was
going to take place anyway, and many of the governors asked for such a
change in a timely fashion. No other significance other than timing.

Hope that helps.

Next year in the Forum!

Vale,

Flavius Vedius Germanicus,

Vale!

Thank you very much for your very kind words - I am both honored and
humbled by your praise. I have already accepted an invitation from
Gens Iulia, but have visited the associated web sites of the other
Gens who so kindly responded and have been quite impressed. Thank you
so very much to everyone who responded - your kindness and
thoughtfulness are very much appreciated.

Valete!

Salve, Proconsul!

I thank you for your consideration and kindness - it looks like the
process is currently as far underway as possible given the current
freeze due to the vote in process. My own interests tend towards the
time of the Roman Empire and its military, political, and historical
significance, along with my admittedly eccentric interest in the
Byzantine Empire (or, as I like to think of it, the Later Roman
Empire). Ultimately, as they say, 'It's all good!'
Nova Roma's citizenry, on the whole, strikes me as intelligent,
thoughtful, and very courteous and considerate - your response here
epitomizes that outlook. I look forward to counting myself in the
ranks.

Vale,

R Palaeologus

HI all,

After several attempts at removal and a new and different anti-virus

I hope this didn't cause any problems with others on this list. If so, my
apologies.

Ave,

I've recently decided to join Nova Roma, cause it seems like a great
place to meet other people that have the same interests as me ; I am
greatly fascinated by roman culture and welcome every opportunity to
expand my knowledge about it and promote the conservation of roman
culture.

So now I am looking for a family in which I would be welcome ; since
I am from Belgium it would be a plus if one or more family members
were from Belgium, but it isn't a necessity.
I'd like to talk about this with any pater familias that is accepting
one more civis, so I can decide which family would suit me best. You
can contact me by e-mail or ICQ #105326606.

greetings,
Michiel

I have another question. Was the original privacy law approved by the
Comitia Populi Tributa? If so, shouldn't it be ammended by the CPoT
itself?

Thankyou - makes perfect sense to me. Just to clarify, voting on leges that does not have implications for the comitia centuriata, for example, would normally be put before the tribes right?

Vale,

Decimus Iunius Silanus.
