Subject: [novaroma] ATTN (Religio Romana): Idus Martius (March 15)
From: "Antonio Grilo" <amg@-------->
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 11:22:49 -0000
Salvete omnes

Today is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance when legal business cannot take place.

The Idus of every month are sacred to Iuppiter. An white ewe is
sacrificed to Iuppiter by the Flamen Dialis.

This day belongs to Anna Perenna. Anna Perena is the deified
image of an old woman who either represents the flowing river (amne
perenne) as the indefinitely renewed years, or who had baked bread to feed
Roman soldiers near Bovillae. This is a picnic day, and the Romans travel
out and set up tents and camps around the first milestone of the Via
Flamina, near the Tiber.

This is also the day of the procession of the canophori (reed-bearers) of
the cult of Magna Mater. They come from the border of the Almo and enter
Rome to go to Her temple on the Palatine Hill. From today until the Dies
Sanguinis (9 days later), the woshipers of Magna Mater abstain from some
types of food.

The month of March belongs to Mars, who personifies
the protection of the state and the productivity of the community.

Salve All

This day is a very important one for me. On this date last year I was accepted as a Citizen of Nova Roma!.... The world has turned over many times since then, but my love for Roma has only increased. I hope that I can continue to contribute to our micro-nation at least as much in the future as I have in the past. When I found out I was a Citizen I was holding my 3 week old daughter, the one that we where told would never be born, and now she is as strong and healthy as my feeling for Roma!.... So... I hope this day leaves all of us with some small special memory that everyone can keep with themselves forever.

P.S.
I think, but I am not sure, this day in history holds some other less important event! ;-)

Verite... But the worst was that those who
made the augury true for Gaius Ivliuvs Caesar
ended up precipitating the death of all that they
were defending. In my most humble opinion,
perhaps Divus Caesar was far less dangerous
than those that followed him. If he had lived,
there is a chance the Republic may have been
strengthened rather than eclipsed.

From: Mike Macnair <MikeMacnair@-------->

Salvete!

By this letter I resign my citizenship in Nova Roma and by consequence my
membership of its Senate and my office as Rogator.

I have been considering my position since the resignation of Ericius and
have come to the conclusion that the differences which clearly exist among
us about the nature, purposes and political forms of Nova Roma are so great
as to prevent any serious effective collaboration. As soon as we leave one
controversy we stumble into another.

Further, I have no interest in a Role-Playing Game of the snake-pit
politics of the later Republic (which NR has too often seemed like) and I
cannot conscientiously associate myself with the promotion
(a) of NR as a formally oligarchic "optimate" interpretion of the
republican constitution, as an alternative to democracy - which, without an
effective tribunician veto, it increasingly descends into - or
(b) of romanitas as a sort of system of Victorian Values in the
field of gender, family and general hierarchy, which is a partial
falsification of ancient history as well as being unacceptable in the
twenty-eighth century since the foundation of the City; or
(c) of volkisch fantasies of "ethnic duty" to the gods like those
offered by Lobo Rubro in the recent past and episodically, further back, by
others.

It with surprise that i witness two declarations of renouncement.
It seems that this month of march is a bad one to Nova Roma. Two very respected senatores renounced, to their positions and citizenship. It is painful to me, and perhaps not only to me. Caius Ericius and Marcus Mucius Scaevola are reasonable, very intelligent people and are leaving us. Please reconsider, your opinions were very important to me, i learned a lot with you.

I am here for none of those things. I am here to
learn about Ancient Rome and to share the glory of the
"New Rome".

May I recommend a 30 day vacation to rethink your

Salutem

I, Nicolaus Moravius Vado, paterfamilias of the gens Moravia in Nova Roma, governor of the province of Britannia in Nova Roma, senator in Nova Roma and Flamen Floralis in Nova Roma, hereby tender my resignation from all the aforementioned offices, honours and dignities in Nova Roma, and of my citizenship of the respublica of Nova Roma, with immediate effect.

I name as my successor the dutiful and faithful Cornelius Moravius Laurentibus as the paterfamilias of gens Moravia in Nova Roma. It is my hope and trust that he will continue its best traditions here as long as he feels able.

I did not come to Nova Roma to spend my days and nights arguing with those whose beliefs and values are inimical to mine, but to share Romanitas with kindred spirits. I have spent far too much time doing the former, at the expense of the latter. If I remain here any longer, I see that this will only become more of a problem for me, because I will not ignore what is hateful to me, nor allow my silence to be taken as tacit agreement with those whose manipulation of this society has made it something I no longer wish to be associated with.

Aletheia Moravia leaves with me, and joins me in saying:

Salvete valeteque.

Salvete, Citizen of Nova Roma, and Conscript Fathers;

I am saddened and very discouraged at the resignation of two good and
honorable men from the ranks of Nova Roma. While they were not
gentlemen with whom I have always agreed, they were gentlemen of the
first caliber with whom I have always been proud to serve.

I did not know Senator Magister well in the personal sense, but his
ideas, decisions, and comments have always been extremely valuable to me
in my decision process both as a past Consul and as a Senator.

Senator Vado on the other hand served for a year as my Consular Advisor,
and my Chaplain. I have the greatest respect for him, and his loss is a
great loss both as a personal friend, and as a valued colleague.

I wish the both of you all the best in your future endeavors, and for
what they are worth, you have my extreme regrets in regard to this
decision to leave Nova Roma.

Salve quirites!

Today we have lost Senatores, A Legatus, a Praefectum Aerarii, and
above all, people who cared enough about Nova Roma to participate in
it. We may not have agreed on certain subjects, but I believe that
despite that no one can dispute that these cives brought thoughts and
knowledge to our Res Publica that were of value. I will sorely miss
Nicolaus Moravius Vado, for his wit and depth of knowledge, for his
diligence in the affairs of Britannia, and for his expressing his
views honestly and with conviction. Bicurratus was one of the first
cives to greet me in the Taverna, and he was a very gracious man
at it; as for Scaevola and Ericius, their knowledge of Roma Antiqva
has inspired me to seek to learn more.

Our Res Publica has been sorely diminished on what has truly resulted
a dies nefasti publici.

Today is a day of grave meaning for Rome: The Ides of March have arrived...

Already several great men and women have chosen to take the "placidum iter"
mentioned above and leave Nova Roma. Why they have elected to do so may not
be clear for many but they certainly have reasons for it, you can take my
word for it.

I could also write about a lot of things and persons I came to dislike about
Nova Roma in the last few months. But after Senator Aelius's departure and
after the way my daughter Livia was treated by the Senate I knew that before
long not enough would be left here that I really liked and that would make it
worthwhile to stay.

I, therefore, also made a decision to leave this Community and to share my
Romanitas only with those people I could really associate myself with. I mean
I could live with an Octavius, a Cassius and certainly with a Minucius Audens
but I can only leave with a Germanicus, a Fabulus Maximus and a Pornelius
Sulla.

So by this notice I formally resign and depose myself

from the citizenship of Nova Roma

from the Senatorial seat I possess

from the Praetorian scribe position

and from my paterfamilias power of gens Marcia which is to go to my son
Coriolanus as my last will

I also waive my reconsideration period of nine days, so that this becomes
effective immediately.

so happened on the ides of March 2754 AUC

From: gmvick32@--------

Salvete, Quirities:

By this letter I resign my citizenship in Nova Roma and by
consequence my membership in the Sodalitas Musarum and my
position as Musa Apollo.

In light of several recent events, I have been forced to
conclude that my own interests in Nova Roma are in
irreconcilable conflict with the will of the founders and
preeminent leaders of Nova Roma, and I will never again be
able to be in a position where I could work collaboratively
with certain people central to Nova Roma government.

Despite my repeated attempts to serve the res publica and do
good works for her, I find myself now in a position of
having the greater good that I've accomplished swept away
in a sham interpretation of an inadequate vote by the
Senate.

Despite the assurances of at least one Senator and Consul
that my prorogation would be judged strictly on the basis of
my job performance to date -- AND EVEN THAT SAID PERFORMANCE
WAS SATISFACTORY -- I was consistently judged on the basis
of anything but job performance. My work for you was
rendered nil over a set of petty alleged incident which I
was expected to refute blindly, without knowledge of my
accusors, and out of all semblance of context. I note that
others in Nova Roma have risen to positions far higher than
me after having committed far worse sins than my detractors
have tried to pin on me.

*****
Cives, I was removed from the governorship for referring a
cive to another organization that could provide them
immediate community. I was also removed for failing to
contact a cive who said he was disgruntled with Nova Roma
and make him feel better about it.
*****

I don't need any confirmation to know I was doing the job of
governor better than anyone else in Nova Roma ever has, with
the possible exception of Nicholas Moravius Vado. Shame on
the Senators of Roma who judged me lacking.

For those of the Senate who have interminably offered me
your "lessons" on leadership and management, I return your
words back to you with the contempt they deserve, for I have
no use for your brand of thinking. Several of you have
shown yourselves to me to have true contempt for other
people in the methods you advocated.

I fear that I have come dangerously close to mirroring the
actions of people whom I have come to have little regard for
in terms of their leadership style. For this reason alone,
I must leave lest my imperiled soul become permanently
corrupted by the likes of the people whom I have come to
regard in all forms as sacer and deserving only of contempt:
namely,

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
Flavius Vedius Germanicus
Marcus Cassius Julianus.

Other members of the Senate and I may have had
disagreements, but my objections are primarily with these
three men. I leave them to answer for themselves. I doubt
you'll get the truth from them.

I join my paterfamilias, Marcius Marcius Rex, and our other
friends into obscurity.

I renounce my right to the 9 day waiting period, said
resignation to be effectively immediately.

Salvete,

I have to agree with Scipio -

perhaps Divus Caesar was far less dangerous

Violent actions, carried out clandestinely, don't have a very good
historical track record :(

Salve All

It is unfortunate that a few of our better known and respected citizens have not found what they have been looking for in Nova Roma. But let us not loss sight of the fact that our Micro-nation is very healthy and will continue to grow beyond all of our wildest dreams! Do not loss heart, remember Roma was not built in one day or nor was it always a pleasant undertaking. I believe that those currently resigning have given up more then they themselves know.

Salve,

No, Livia...shame on the Senators........especially your much vaunted Vado
and your OWN paterfamilias.... who did not even bother to vote. Every
Senator has a right to their opinion and their vote. Had more than 12 of 22
bothered to speak at all, let alone in your behalf, you probably would have
been pro-rouged.

I am also shocked by this wave of resignations. This has me baffled and
disheartened, since I have recently been interested in spending some
time developing my Gens and finding my place in Nova Roma. Now I am
really confused and definitely feeling like I must have missed
something.

Salvete,

Even worse, violent actions, complete with accusations and
recriminations, have gone out today, in public. These are just as
bad,
if not worse. I came here expecting to find individuals interested in
Roma. I find many with some interest, and others with nothing but a
"my way or the highway" attitude. I have asked the Praetors to take a
look at the case of Senator Caius Aelius Ericius, and found out that
he will not declare against those who threatened him. In the case of
Livia Marcia, several of us tried unsuccessfully to reconciliate her
with our paterfamilias, and heard also unsubstantiated accusations.
To
this day, she has been unwilling to bring before the Praetores a
clear
account of this problem. With Senator Rex, although I hold nothing
but
the utmost respect for him, I believe that the personal attack that
he
launched in his resignation (and for that matter, all the personal
attacks to which we have been sad witnesses over the last months) is
below his Dignitas.

I am deeply saddened by this turn of events. This political mudfest
does nothing but tarnish our accomplishments, and really does no one
any good. Livia, I respect you for your accomplishments, and although
I cannot break the seal of confidence of our Gens, suffice it to say
I
and others tried very hard to bring concordia between you and Sulla.
You constantly rebuffed us, and since then you have continually
attacked our Paterfamilias (and by extension our Gens). The case of
your prorogation was infinitely complicated by a misinterpretation of
a simple question, and yet you choose to interpret this in the worst
possible light. I personally ask you, from my heart, as a former
frater of yours, do not leave. You are very valuable to Nova Roma;
this situation can be resolved with honest dialogue and the cessation
of these intrigues.

This plea I extend to all of those who left today; if I remember
correctly, our ancestors were a rather thick-skinned and resilient
bunch who could pretty much hash out even worse situations. Please
don't let Nova Roma fall prey to pettiness and childish tantrums.

Marius Cornelius Scipio
