I am happy to be of service. I really think this is something that will
benefit a number of our Citizens who might want a way to at least be
informed of official notices without slogging through the main list.

The machinery is already in motion to send out a one-time mailing to all our
existing Citizens informing them of the existence of the list. (After that,
I don't want to pester them about joining through direct mails.)

I would also ask our esteemed Censores to include a mention of the new list
in the welcoming email they send out to new Citizens. Should our Curator
Araneum find an appropriate place to do so, a mention on the main web site
would also be quite appropriate.

I agree with Publius Sentius Rutilianus Dexion. There are citizens in
NR who don't care about politics, but they are attracted by comunity,
history, philosophy or something else.

But Marcus Octavius Germanicus is right too. Higher magistrates spend
a lot of time, labour and maybe money too to keep NR sites in
progress. A reasonable tax is a good way to advance NR further.

What is the costitutional way to establish taxation? Who is competent
to make it? Senate? Consuls? Comitia?

There have been a number of good thoughts on
fund-raising (internal and external) -- but I must
repeat my recommendation that a committee be formed to
make some recommendations on income for NR. If we
don't, we'll either beat the carcass until the horse
has no hair or forget it when the next crisis emerges,
and nothing will be done.

We have two volunteers for the committee already. I
hope those who are interested in serving will raise
their hands now and be counted so a plan can be
developed.

The Senate has the authority to establish taxation:

"The Senate may, by Senatus consultum, impose taxes, fees, or other
financial requirements on the citizens in order to maintain the financial
welfare of the state." (Constitution paragraph V.B.2.)

No "committee" (as has been suggested) is required. However, the reason I
introduced the whole subject here was because I wanted to get (and give the
rest of the Senate a chance to see for themselves) a feel for what the cives
thought about the idea, and to solicit ideas about how such a thing could
and/or should be implemented. Indeed, the Senate vote on the subject
probably won't happen for several months, after we've all had a chance to
thoroughly discuss the various options. But ultimately the final decision
will rest with the Senate.

Bear in mind that membership dues (taxation), if adopted, wouldn't take
effect until next year, as such would need to be included as part of the
budget.

I would think it wouldn't be too too hard. If the box on the form were
checked, a blank email could be sent (using the applicant's email address as
the "from" address) to the NovaRomaAnnounce-subscribe@--------
address.

Another alternative would be to have the html code that yahoogroups provides
on the verification page after the citizenship form is submitted. Something
like, "Your application has been successfully sent to the Censors. If you'd
like to subscribe to the Nova Roma Announcement list, which is..." and then
a box for them to put in their email address and click to join.

It could very well be automated; our Curator Araneum would be the best
source of advice. Marcus Octavius?

Lucilla Cornelia Fortunata and I have finalized plans for this weekend's

Once everyone arrives we'll go grab a bite of lunch, so we can all chat and
get acquainted, and then back to the Museum! As of this morning, it looks
like there will be three of us from Nova Roma attending (plus a couple of my
friends may tag along - don't worry, although they may be barbarians,
they're tame ones ~_^) myself, Lucilla Cornelia Fotunata (driving all the
