Ave,

Knowing the amount of ill will that has been built up between myself and
other citizens in Nova Roma, I now come before the People of Nova Roma
with an Oath that I will try my very best to act civilly to all citizens
of Nova Roma. I have given this situation alot of thought, and now that
the elections are over, I would like to repair some of the damage done
by the political rhetoric.

I will do my best to live up to the Roman Virtue of Concordia.

Subject: [novaroma] Election Results - the Junior Consul Elect Speaks
From: cassius622@--------
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 23:39:16 EST
Salvete Omnes,

I took today off to finish my holiday shopping, and have just returned to
find that I have been elected as a Consul for the second time.

No doubt it will sink in tomorrow, and I'll be all elated! ;) Right now,
however, what seems most pressing is all the work that needs to be done. In
this year a working foundation of a legal system must be built, and many
financial issues need to be solved. We must also consider such issues as
continuing outreach projects to ensure the healthy growth of our nation, and
beginning cultural programs such as educational projects.

The time of a magistrate is all too short, far less than a year when holiday
times and the next election campaign time are subtracted from the active
length of office. We all have hopes that this will be a banner year for Nova
Roma, and a lot of effort will be necessary to make things happen in the time
available.

I would like to take this time to thank *everyone* who stood for a candidacy
in this election. Win or lose, being willing to step up and take
responsibility for making Nova Roma a working nation is an honorable thing.
My thanks go also to everyone who took the time to cast their vote, whether
they voted for me or not. Active participation from all of us is the key for
the survival of New Rome.

This race for the Consulship was a difficult one for me, since my two
opponents are people I have met personally, and consider to be my friends. My
campaign was shortened as a result of this I think... I'd have been equally
content to work with either Germanicus or Vado, or to see them working
together.

In a personal note, I do hope that Nicholas Moravius Vado will consider
running for the Consulship again in the future. His work in the Britannia
Provincia has been exemplary, and Nova Roma will need his wisdom and vision
in the future.

Again, my thanks to all. I look forward to working with our Senior Consul,
Flavius Vedius Germanicus, in the new year.

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus
Junior Consul, Senator, Pontifex Maximus

Salve Quirites!

Congratulations to all our newly elected magistrates, and to Nova
Roma for an election that showed that our cives truly care for her.
Thanks to all the cives who voted, and I look forward to working with
my colleague (and bona fortuna to you, for being the first of your
gens elected to a magistracy, Titus Sertorus Albinus!!) in the coming
year.

The best thing about this election is that we didn't have to go
through 4 recounts and posing the question to our Praetoris Urbanis
to find out who our magistrates are going to be :-) :-) :-)

May you all enjoy the Saturnalia, and the holidays with your families
and friends. Lux, felicitas, et amicitia ad omnes!!!

Vale,

Marius Cornelius Scipio

Cinna. As Legatus Germaniae, I´m proud that one more citizen from Germania
made the race. Lucilla: Good work! All the best for you.

My special thanks to all the citizens who trusted in me and elected me.
Thank you all! I promise you to do my very best for our Res Publica.

Also my heartful thanks for our Rogatores who had some hard days and nights.
You all made a good job. Thank you very much.

To all new Magistrates: Let us now work together for our future. Let us all
cooperate to achieve the best for our Res Publica. With knowledge,
experience, hard work and our common sense of Romanitas we will have another
successfull year.

One roman emperor, I think it was Pertinax, gave following parole when he
took the laurel´s wreath: MILITEMUS - We want to serve. That was my leading
word in the past, and it will be in the future.

Again, Quirites: thank you all!
Again, newly elected Magistrates: Congratulations!

Vivat Nova Roma!

Valete
Caius Flavius Diocletianus

Not in Britannia, it isn't (I hope you were counting the Brits. as part of
Europe?) Though possibly it gets into tins euphemistically labelled:
"Kit-E-Kat Meaty Chunks In Gravy With Lamb". I tried some once, just to see
what the cats were making such a fuss about. It tasted terrible. Might not
have been too bad in a chili con carne, though. With enough chili.

These giant South American aquatic hamsters the size of pigs are outrageous
creatures. In Britain, there are colonies of them, descended from ancestors
escaped from zoos and the country estates of the eccentric rich, notably in
the East Anglian wetlands like the Norfolk Broads. The largest rodent on the
planet, and vegetarian, at that. I've never met anyone who's eaten one. BTW,
I do not think it would make an acceptable sacrificial substitute for an ox.
;-)

Regarding the European wartime diet of cats, during the Second World War my
grandmother's cat ate better then than at any other time in his life (all
kinds of stuff used to fall off the back of Army lorries in those days). The
cat grew big and strong on SPAM, MacConochie and tinned Canadian red salmon
convoyed across the stormy U-Boat-infested waters of the Atlantic to
blockade-embattled Britain in those dark times. The cat loved my father and
grandmother, but was a terror to everyone else in the neighbourhood. There
is a legend that the local butcher had to be hospitalised after being
savaged by a long-tailed black rabbit...

Subject: [novaroma] NOVA ROMA: capita I et II
From: "S. Apollonius Draco" <hendrik.meuleman@-------->
Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 14:30:57 +0100
Salvete Novaromani!

Here are the first two installments of the Nova Roma Mars story. Don't hesitate to write me with honest, constructive criticism, I appreciate all sorts.

a.. Veni, vidi.
It had been a day like any other in Nova Roma. The faint red shades in the sky, the rusty soil, the sounds of voices filling the air in the streets and the marketplaces, people clad in togas walking everywhere, and an occasional ship flying over the Urbs, leaving a long trace of milky dust that seemed like a comet's tail. Yes, everything looked very normal, and it was very normal, too.

If it hadn't been that Marcus Cassius Iulianus had been murdered that day.

He had been practically the founder of the Nova Roma colony on Mars, and was a greatly honoured and respected man among his people, being a Consul and a Senator. The Senate and the People were shocked, and not in the least is friend and consular collegue Flavius Vedius Germanicus, his wife Patricia Cassia, and their gentiles. Through a Senatusconsultum a general state of crisis was declared, and the man or woman who could catch Cassius' unknown murderer and bring him to justice would be greatly rewarded. However, no fingerprints were found, and the only thing the Praetores investigating the case knew was that he had most likely been poisoned. Of course, the news spread like wildfire across the Red Planet, and soon enough every press agency knew of the horrible news.

Some extended their sympathy to the gens Cassia, and offered help in their times of emotional trouble, while others began gathering in dark tabernae, or at remote villae, speculating and gossipping about the identity of the murderer - if the murderer wasn't among them! Some contended it was a political murder, others assumed it was a personal action that had sprung forth from some kind of vendetta or vengeance, and many others thought it had been an assassin sent from Earth, their close neighbour and economic concurrent. However, the Praetores, Quintus Fabius Maximus and Caius Flavius Diocletianus, were in deep trouble. They led the investigation personally without leaving it to the countless Aediles in the Urbs, and even though that cursed day everyone was in panic, it was evident already that this riddle would remain unsolved.

b.. Tempus fugit
A few days later, at a large villa in the outskirts of Colonia Marineris, a middle-large town in the neighbourhood of the legendary Valles Marineris, a deep red canyon that surpassed the greatest natural wonders seen on Earth. The canyon was about ten kilometres deep and ran for thousands of kilometres across the surface - if the weather was clear, you could even see it from space. Of course, the Colonia Marineris was mainly a touristical spot, and it was doomed to disappear due to the terraformatio-project that had been initiated a few years ago by the Senate and the various Comitiae. The progress of the terraformatio was slow though, and even though the Martian skies were slowly being filled up with oxygen by subterranean clusters of plants and bacteria, there was little change in the weather pattern, and the daily lifestyle of the common Martian - or Roman, it was nearly a synonym. Right now there was a minor dust storm, and all gates of the city were closed. Through the thick, transparent glass of the city's protection shield the swirling dust was visible, raging above and around the glass, as though the town itself was captured in a gigantic storm, and was flying along with the orange winds. However, Marcus Octavius Germanicus didn't pay attention to all this. He was alone in his villa, in his study, a large room with genuine white marble coating, and large windows. The corners were ornamented with replicas of ancient statues, both Greek and Roman, and on the wall hung a red standard with the golden letters SPQR stitched in. Albeit the windows were large, they didn't catch much light at this time of the day, and certainly not when there was a sandstorm outside. The only sound in the room was the slight, quiet buzzing of a computer, and the ticking sounds of Octavius' fingers sliding over the keyboard, with an occasional click from the mouse, or a muted bell sound. His face was a mask of concentration, and he was utterly oblivious to everything but his current activity. He was a Senator, and moreover he contr
his all by himself, but when he was at home he continued digging in the systems just for fun - a sort of fun few would understand, though.

Octavius had found something interesting. He had been cleaning the message boards earlier at the actual building where the mainframe was (Nova Roma itself, of course), and had found some persistent tidbits of binary insects that didn't go away. Of course, being the perfectionist he was, he wanted everything clean, and decided to examine the digital insects further at home. What he found was interesting though. The "bugs" he had found were actually small packages of information, some sort of digital footprint that had been left by all e-mail flowing in and out of the server system. Some contained legible characters, others were merely discarded attachments and rubbish. Quickly enough Octavius had found a solution, and created a "raptor" programme that immediately searched for files that had any reference to an e-mail. They were also in the same directory, so the work was fairly easy, although it took quite some time to delete remnants of e-mails of which some were over fifteen years old. No wonder the servers had been so cranky lately! Throughout many familiar errors and computer crashes that didn't surprise Octavius, the raptor programme had suddenly found something very peculiar. It was an e-mail that had been somehow cut into pieces by a bot, and encrypted, but the most odd thing was that it didn't have a person whom it was addressed to, not even a blind carbon copy. The Senator enlarged the window of his raptor programme and started deciphering the code, that would have been just numbers and patterns to someone else. During his deciphering, it also became appearent that the message had only been sent four days ago, even though the path from the message indicated it was created seventeen years ago. In the dusty shades of his study, a deep frown formed on his face, as he continued to translate the codes into legible characters. The parts of the message that survived said:

Factum est. Primus casus est, alii sequentur. Alea iacta est.

Eugenias

Although Latin was an official administrational language in the colonies of Nova Roma, not many people wrote in it, and most of them were able to speak only a few words or phrases. And what was even more interesting, usually e-mails without an addressee were never sent. Also, not many people had Greek names, so Octavius assumed Eugenias was a pseudonym. He leaned back in his hard, wooden armchair and thought carefully. Of course the link with the assassination of Cassius was easily made. Everything seemed to be corrrect, but the most frightening thing was that if this Eugenias was indeed the killer, or one of the men that had plotted Cassius' death, there would be more to follow. Thusly, Octavius did not hesitate and sent an e-mail to the Praetores investigating the case, along with some technical specifications. There was no time to lose, nor to waste.

Meanwhile, the sandstorm outside grew larger, and the glass bulb that protected the Colonia Marineris continued to wage its senseless battle against the elements of Martian nature - Mars, who was after all the God of War.

I thank you for your trust, citizens of Nova Roma, and I hope that this token of esteem from the people means something for the Senatus, regarding their vote on the necessary exemption of the Lex Iunia de MA I need.

From: jmath669642reng@--------

Salve, Appollonius Formosanus;

It would seem in the last few weeks that there has been much about Nova
Roma to dismay you, since most of what I have heard from your pen is
complaint directed against a growing and lively micronation. A
micronation finding itself and serving those who serve her. She also
must develop teeth to restrain those who take advantage of the pleasures
that she offers.
As I have offered in the past, I see no such dismay, except that of one
individual who would wish to get on with her life and her restoration to
Nova Roma, but who is faced everyday with the reminder of an unpleasant
occurance.

Human rights are of course important, and should be addressed by any and
all who assume the mantle of a Magistrate. However, the transgressions
of individuals against others in the same orgaization must be measured
and guarded against by the revocation of certain rights to prevent the
complete disruption of the organization, and those who labor within that
organization by those who would have no restrictions at all.

If the worst thing that ever happens in Nova Roma is the certification
against a transgressor by the Majority of the Senate, supported by a
Tribune, and with at least three former precedents, then I shall be
quite satisfied. The Comitia was not available and well you know it, or
the whole mess would have been brought before it, and well you know that
as well. My Consular Colleague and I have demonstrated our wish for an
open and fair Consulship often enough for even you to be able to see
that. The recent election results support my statements better than any
words.

The "Right resident in the majority" that you speak of rules in every
aspect of our macro-nation and has ruled in every major decision in Nova
Roma. The Majority Rules and the Minority is heard. On this basis we
do everyday business in all walks of life, large amounts of money are
granted or denied on the basis of such decisions, people's dreams,
wishes and hopes for the future in a thousand different venues each day
are decided by such
means, and it is no different in Nova Roma, except in your eyes.

Certainly it is true that the SPCA is a necessary adjunct to our
civilization, because animals cannot speak for themselves, and in all
but a very few cases must depend upon the generosity and love of those
who can and will speak for them to do so in keeping them from harm and
insuring good treatment and a loving home. I am sure that you will not
compare your "extremely bad case" to a dumb animal. She certainly has
the ability to speak, which is what got her in trouble.

The NAACP is an organization which is, in my view, one which is designed
to fight the idea that a man or a woman's color is more important than
thier contribution to the society in which they live. The travesty of
slavery throughout the world, brought on primarily by the fact that
blacks could survive the work in the sugar cane fields of the New World
(South America) gave rise to a horrible travesty which we are just
recovering slowly from. But your "extremely bad case" has no such
background problems as she is an honorable veteran of her nation's armed
forces and a law-abiding resident in the State of Texas, which indicates
that she has little difficulty with Texas Law or U.S. Law. She has been
admitted back into NR as she requested, after resigning while in office

I find that it is hard to compare these two hard-working and extremely
useful organizations to a single person who has satisfactorily endured
the laws of the Military and the State of Texas for years, and must be
suddenly unwilling to continue such within NR. Further, this person
made a mistake in my view, and the majority of the Senate agreed and
further agreed upon a penalty which was carried out. A similar penalty
was carried out in previous cases providing precedent, and the person
was then left alone to continue as they may. In one of those previous
instances a penalized person rose to a distinguished position in NR
through his own efforts and the trust of the people, so the previous
penalty, in that case, could not have done much harm.

However, this above gentleman, did not have the benefit of someone who
constantly kept his name and transgression before the people of Nova
Roma, even as I am led to believe against the will of she who is being
defended. He did not have someone who consistantly at every turn, made
mention of the fact of the transgresson, reliving such almost each and
every day in post, and attitude. This of course is pursued only in the
spirit of well meaning with no personal wish to advance oneself or with
an eye to the main chance. That much is certainly understood----by the
Minority.

The "incredable arrogance" to which you accuse this Consulship and this
Senate is both insulting and unjustified. I would say rather that the
"incredible arrogance" could well be placed at the door of a single
individual, who feels that his view should prevail against that of the
Majority, and that the Minority should rule rather than the other way
around. It would seem that in this case the injustice is the situation
as seen by you--many others see no such injustice. It would seem that
the standards must be your standards and anything other is
unsatisfactory. It would seem that while there is an appearance of
someone protesting that he has not gotten his way, by many--that too is
to be considered only in the light of that individual's views, rather
than that of the majority.

I consider the "incredible arrogance" of this situation to be the
arrogance of one person declaring that the Majority has no rights, that
the penalty for a minor transgression is "an extremely bad case" and
continuing in this vein ad nauseum without making any effort to correct
the situation through Lex or Consultum.

I am glad to hear that you will be working to flesh out the Civil Rights
already granted in skeleton form in the Constitution. You then will be
working with both myself and my Consular Collegue while we labor to
continue the work on the Civil Rights Laws as we did throughout our
Consulship, and with the authority granted to us by the citizens of Nova
Roma.

As I said in my former post on this subject, your deliberately excessive
comments and your incessant harping do no-one any good--least of all she
who you would make a martyr. Establish a Sodalitas if you must to your
Civil Rights, as you see them, gather your supporters, and do something
about the situation other than talk---but I am sorry----that won't work
since the decisions on such things are done by Majority here and you do
not believe in such. Hmmmm!! A difficult situation indeed!!! I cannot
say I wish you well in your efforts, but I do say that it is your right
to continue to harangue the List--that is one of the rights guaranteed
as long as you maintain a moderate and civil dialog.

Vale, Respectfully;
Marcus Audens
