T Labienus Quiritibus Texani S P D

Inspired in part by Livia Cornelia's efforts in Colorado, I would like
to start sounding out our Texan citizens about the possibility of a
Texas-wide get-together in three or four months. Also, I'd like to
arrange a less ambitious informal meeting for those of us in the San
Antonio-Austin area sometime in the next month or two. I realize we're
rapidly moving into the holiday season, but I don't see why we couldn't
rendezvous for dinner or some other equally low-key activity.

If you're interested in either or both of these possibilities, please
contact me off-list to discuss when and where.

Any resemblance between the above views and those of my employer, my
terminal, or the view out of my window is purely coincidental. Any
resemblance between the above and my own views is non-deterministic.
The question of the existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold
them is left as an exercise for the reader. The question of the
existence of the reader is left as an exercise for the second god
coefficient. (A discussion of non-orthogonal, non-integral polytheism
is beyond the scope of this article.)

Subject: [novaroma] ATTN (Religio Romana): ante diem VI Idus Novembres (November 8th)
From: "Antonio Grilo" <amg@-------->
Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2000 15:29:18 -0000
Salvete omnes

This is one of the dies comitiales (C), when committees of citizens can vote
on political or criminal matters.

Today is the "Mundus patet" (open Mundus), when the Mundus is ritually
opened. The Mundus is the trench that Romulus created when he drove the plow
which marked the outline of the city at its foundation. The center of the
Mudus is considered the center of Rome, for it was from this point that
Romulus measured the dimensions of the city. An altar is reared over the
Mundus.
The Mundus is an arched subterranean cavity which establishes the
communication between the world of the living and the Infernus, world of the
dead, kingdom of Dis/Orcus/Pluto and Proserpina. To appease the Dii Inferi
and the dead, people deposit ther fruits, vegetables and other offerings.
Because the Mundus is the entrance to the chtonic world,
it is also said that the Mundus belongs to Ceres (Festus, p.126, 4).

This opening of the Mundus is also performed on August 24 and October 5th.
Several "religiones" ("religio" means "religious duty". Note: the word
"religio" had
not the same meaning which it has today. The Romans considered that there
were different cults - i.e. different ways of worshiping the Gods - and not
different Religions in modern sense) apply today:
- It is forbidden to engage in combat.
- It is forbidden to raise troops.
- It is forbidden to make troops march.
- It is forbidden to raise anchor.
- It is forbidden to marry or procreate.
Nevertheless, comitia and other public activities are allowed.

Today is the 5th day of the Ludi Plebeii in honour of Iuppiter. These
games were held between November 4 and November 17. Entertainment such as
chariot racing was held in the Circus Maximus. The games were probably
established in 220 BC by Gaius Flaminius when was Censor. Only the Ludi
Romani were more important than these games. They were the responsibility of
the Aediles Plebis.

The month of November is sacred to Diana.

Pax Deorum vobiscum
Antonius Gryllus Graecus
Pontifex

Subject: [novaroma] Invitation from Musarum
From: "For the Muses" <scriba_forum@-------->
Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2000 20:05:25 GMT
Salvete Omnes!

The Organizing Committee Members (the Delecti) are pleased to invite you to
take part in an interest group known as Musarum.

We are a group whose work is dedicated to the Nine Muses and Apollo in our
celebration of the arts...prose, poetry, music, dance, etc. It is our aim
to celebrate those aspects of the arts which contributed to the glory of
Rome, and those which materialized from Roman influence.
Indeed, this leaves alot of things to celebrate!

For how can we comprehensively celebrate the goodness of Rome without
addressing the arts?

In time, we hope to become a Sodalitas of Nova Roma. For now, we are a
group of individuals with a common interest.

Our group is divided into 10 Collegium, or Interest Areas, named after
Apollo and The Nine Muses, as follows:

I. Calliopes (Epic Poetry)
II. Clius (History and Social Science)
III. Euterpes (Music)
IV. Melpomenes (Tragedy)
V. Terpsichores (Dance)
VI. Eratus (Lyric poetry)
VII. Polyhymniae (Sacred Song and Verse)
VIII. Uraniae (Astronomy and Natural Science)
IX. Thalliae (Comedy)
X. Apollonis (Plastic and graphic arts and architecture)

To become a part of Musarum, please do the following:

Subscribe to the For the Muses Egroups list by linking to the following URL,
and just follow the instructions.

www.egroups.com/group/forthemuses

Post a note on the list stating your intent to join the group....this is
important, as merely subscribing to the list will not relay to us your
intent to actually be a part of the organization. Please look over the
Collegia as listed above and indicate in your post the name of the Collegia
(you may join more than one) to which you would like to be associated. As
of November 22 2400 EST, membership acceptance shall be closed for a time,
and those who have joined us will be engaged in planning for nominations
and elections of officers. Details regarding this shall be posted on the
"For the Muses" Egroups list. Elections are slated for December.

Not a citizen yet???? Not to worry! You are most welcome to join us!

Citizenship in Nova Roma is not essential to membership, although it is if
you wish to hold an office.

We do hope that you will consider joining us for some delightful sharing of
materials and experiences, and the planning of enriching experiences in the
celebration of the arts.

For Apollo and The Muses,
Bene Valete!

Musarum Delecti: Aeternia Draconia (Foundress )
Gn. Moravius Piscinus (Rogator)
P. Cornelia Strabo (Obstetrix)
Senator et Proconsul L. Cornelius Sulla Felix
Sextus Apollonius Draco (Rogator)
Propraetor Alexander I.C. Probus

Subject: [novaroma] Roman Presentation
From: jmath669642reng@--------
Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2000 15:51:32 -0500 (EST)
Salve, Laura Maria Crispa;

I live about two hours from Boston (depends on who is driving, I
suppose) and would be willing to come to Boston to give a Roman
Demonstration / Presentation. I will leave it to you to determine a
list of 5 possible topics that you and your people would like to have
presented. Currently my open weekend days are:

Nov. 18 and 25;

Dec. 2, 9, 16;

Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27.

Weekdays are virtually any date, as I am retired.

So that you will have some idea of my interests in Nova Roma, in order
to perhaps match up with your group's interests, I offer these topics:

--Roman Military Engineering and Architechture;

--Sodalitas Militarium Founder;

--Sodalitas Egressus Founder;

--Student of Roman Naval Arcitechture / Tactics;

--First Person Reenactor.

Vale, Respectfully;
Marcus Minucius Audens
Consul et Senator

Subject: [novaroma] Reposting of ATTENTION PLEBEIANS (changed)
From: dougies@--------
Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2000 23:53:30 -0000
Ave quirite et pater conscript,

I am posting this message in the hope that you (plebeians) will all
write to me with your opinions and so forth on the topic.

I have been considering the idea of creating a chat room to act as a
sort of a Comitia Plebis. The reason for this is that the main list is
becoming crowded with debates, the normal citizens have little
interaction (other than reading the main list dispatches), and it is a
long process trying to get the ideas of everyone heard. The chat room
will allow a running, continuously updatable discussion on topics,
issues and ideas. On specific days (posted on the main list) the
tribunes would set these aside for discussion and passing of laws and
bills, or to have them passed on to the senate for discussion. At
first, I felt that this made it seem a bit elitist, but I have found
that the patricians have equal methods under their grasp (I am not
trying to make the patricians sound like tyrants, far fom it. I know
that many of them are great people (Lucius Cornelius and Livia
Cornelia as an example)). All I ask, is that plebeians who read this
e-mail me back with ideas on how it could be implemented and governed
(especially since we can't ask the tribunes to constantly see over the
assembly...they are only human after all).

I would also appreciate the tribunes of the plebs giving their
opinions about this, as I hope to have them actively involved in this
venture. I have already received ideas and opinions about this, and
have created methods for the assembly based upon this. If you would
like to hear these ideas, please e-mail me to request them (along with
any opinions) and I will be more than happy to oblige.

Please write to me you ideas or opinions about this. They will be
greatly appreciated.

Ave, atque, vale for now,

Gaius Sentius Bruttius Sura
