Subject: [novaroma] the various e-group lists

Salvete,

Pardon my ignorance, but is there somewhere on the NR main site a
listing of all the mailing lists related to Nova Roma? Both the
interests lists (like the Musae list, or the Law list) of the
languages lists (French, Deutch, etc..) are useful tools to the
NovaRoman community. Maybe a section of the main site could be
devoted to presenting theses list?

Subject: [novaroma] Report from Colorado
From: <gmvick32@-------->

Salvete Omnes!

It is my pleasure to report that the first group meeting of
Nova Romans in Colorado went very well!! Five of our 7
cives met for about 5 hours this afternoon.

We started off with a light lunch, then went shopping for
history, religio, etc. books at the Tattered Cover, and
finished with coffee and dessert before heading home on a
very rainy, dreary day.

This promises to be a great start for the Colorado regio!!!

Subject: [novaroma] Byzantine Military - Request for Source Material

Avete Omnes:

Venator hic:

A young man who is an acquaintence from the Heathen Community is looking for sources of information on Byzantine
Military History.
He seems a serious student and likes to get his answers correct. Looks like he is focusing on 9th to 11th century
Byzantium, since he mentioned the Varangian guard. So far the "only two works I can find (in English, anyway) are Hilda
R. Ellis-Davidson's "The Viking Road to Byzantium" and Sigfus Blondal's "The Varangians of Byzantium", both hideously
out of print." He is also looking for reports on how the returning Guardsmen affected their home communities (mainly
Kievien/Russian) through the influene of new wealth and experience.

Reply to me, and I'll relay.

mille gratias - Venii

The only primary military sources we Byzantine scholars from that period use
is
the "Taktika" by Leo III, "Praecepta Militaria" by Nikephoros Phokas, and

"Taktika" Nikephoros Ouranos.
Excerpts of these can be found in McGeer's "Sowing the Dragon's Teeth"
a scholarly book on Byzantine warfare in tenth century. (I'm quoted in it.)
Most of our discussions are done in form of periodicals, many are not
available to the public, however two of the most famous and useful are
"Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies" (BMGS) and Greek Roman & Byzantine studies
(GRBS).
If you point your browser to Amazon.Com/, there are a several books on
Byzantine warfare listed, the problem is these are out of print. For a
description of the make up of the Varangian Guard and its battle history one
can consult the "Alexiad of Anna Comnena" however this written in the 11th
Century. The Cambridge Medevial History Vol. IV has a chapter devoted to the
Varangians and the Rus, and of course there is Oman's "Art of War in The
Middle Ages" though dated in parts, is still one of the best surveys on the
Byzantines and their type warfare with a good discription of Dyrrhakium (1081
CE) the Guard's last formal battle with large numbers.
