EX DOMO PROPRAETORIS BRITANNIAE

Nicolaus Moravius popularibus suis plurimam salutem dat

Urgent family business takes me north up Bremetenacum way tomorrow, for several days.

The inhabitants of that backwater of a retirement colonia are so stuffy, they think an internet cafe is a fish restaurant - so I'll be out of touch during that time.

Therefore, for any urgent business relating to Provincia Britanniae, please contact my deputy Procurator Publius Claudius Lucentius Severus Bicurratus, at bicurratus@--------; while any urgent matters relating to gens Moravia should be directed to moraviuspiscinus@--------.

Bene valete

Vado.

Subject: [novaroma] Pater/Materfamilias guidelines
From: "L. Cornelius Sulla" <alexious@-------->
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 21:10:14 -0700
Ave quirites

After having a lengthly discussion with Livia Cornelia we discussed the subject of the Role of Pater/Materfamilias. In this discussion I came to develop some guidelines for Pater/Materfamilas in the conclusion that by the end of next year we will most likely have over 1,000 citizens. I know that I have probably left quite a few things out but so far have come up with the following set of guidelines:

1. Guidance for newbies
2. Promoting their Gens members via political and religious offices
3. Keeping their gens members informed on NR events like Sodalias and other goings on...
4. Approving new members
5. Being available to all Gens members as needed.
6. Conflict management between members of the same gens
7. Conflict management between members of other Gens.
8. Promotion of the Gens within NR and outside of NR.

First off, I would like to know everyone thinks of the guidelines I came up with. Secondly, I would like to get information like if I left something important out. As I am Paterfamilias of one of the largest Gentes in NR, I would really appreciate some feedback so that I can further define the role of Paterfamilias. Also, as Censor I would like feedback so that I can give a more thorough explanation of just what it means to be a Pater/Materfamilias. Thank you for your time in response.

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix

Subject: [novaroma] New List
From: "L. Cornelius Sulla" <alexious@-------->
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 21:22:58 -0700
Ave quirites

In an effort to alleviate traffic on this list and to foster
additional and more detailed conversation on the specialized
subject of ancient Roman and Nova Roman law, I have created
a list called NovaRomaLaws@--------

Here is the description for the list:

This list will be about the discussion of Nova Roma Laws in
all capacities. Not only past laws, but the lawmaking
progress. This list also will focus on ancient Rome's
laws, both Republican and Imperial. The same scope will be
given (discussion on ancient laws and the law making process
and implementation.)

I hope that some of our legal experts, past magistrates and
future magistrates might join this list so that we all can
have an opportunity to gain knowledge from each other!

A long term goal would be the creation of a Sodalitas
focusing on law and political science.

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix

Subject: [novaroma] Fw: [CaliforniaNovaRoma] Re: another question about citizenship and reinacting
From: "Caius Flavius Diocletianus" <3s@-------->

Salve, Ron.

About auxiliary troops:

The auxiliary forces in imperial times had generally non-citizen soldiers.
After serving 25 years, the soldiers reward was the granting of roman
citizenship. There are 2 exceptions to this:
- the ethnical "numeri", irregular troops, served for a specific time for
money. They were mercenaries and received no citizenship after completing
their service.
- Furthermore, there were auxiliary units consisting of roman citizens,
called "civium romanorum". These were units who received citizenship as a
reward for bravery or outstanding service or the unit was compeltely raised
by roman citizens in time of emergency.

Their commanders:

During the early imperial time the commanders of cohortes and alae were
usually legionary centurions with a title of "praepositus". From the first
century CE onwards the commanders were usually members of the equestrian
order, called "praefecti". Sometimes members of senatorial status were used
as commanders of auxiliary units consisting of roman citizens (see above) or
some outstanding units as alae miliariae (Alae consisting of thousand men).

Hope this helps.

Vale
Caius Flavius Diocletianus

I thank to everyone who either with email, prayers or even a simple good
