Subject: [novaroma] I Mourn
From: "Lingo Man" <dbarr@-------->
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 20:08:58 -0700
My maternal grandmother sustained a fall this morning in which she struck
her temple, causing internal cranial bleeding exacerbated by her being on
blood-thinners.

The doctors have declared her brain-dead. Her ventilator has been shut off,
but she is still breathing; she is not, however, expected to last the night.

Please pray to whichever god or gods you worship most dearly that her
passage may be easy and her rebirth be joyous.

Forgive the formality of these words -- I can write this no other way.

Doug

Salvete omnes,

Some of you may already know this, but Quintus, Lucius and I of the gens
Apollonia will all be absent during the period from August 2 until August
16. We're away to Greece. This is just a reminder so you'll know I will
only be able to respond to personal e-mails after that period.

The senior Consul's sister was seriously injured in a motor vehicle
accident this weekend, and this has delayed the opening of the Senate
session. Q. Fabius reports that she has shown some improvement yesterday,
and he may be relieved at her bedside by his brother.

I am certain that all civies will offer prayers for her recovery.

Thank you to all who have phoned or written, and for your prayers. They mean

My grandmother passed easily and painlessly, without regaining
consciousness, at about 9:00 PM.

Be well, and again my thanks.

Salve

I will pray for her.
Have faith and take all the time you need. Being
there, by her side, is important, both for her as well
for yourself. Feeling the love from the dear ones
sometimes helps more than medicine.

May everything turn out all right.

Subject: [novaroma] ATTN (Religio Romana): Kalendae Sextiliae (August 1st)
From: "Antonio Grilo" <amg@-------->
Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 20:19:08 +0100
Salvete omnes

This is one of the dies fasti (F), a day on which private and public
business are allowed.

The month of Sextilis was renamed Augustus in honour of Emperor Octavius
Augustus. This month is sacred to Ceres.

This is the day of the Kalendae Sextiliae. Today the Pontifices announce
the Nonas from the Curia Calabra, after performing a sacrifice to Iuno,
where Ianus is also
invoked. The Regina Sacrorum also sacrifices to Iuno at the Regia.
Today, capite velato, I have invoked Iuno Covella on the 5th day by
saying the traditional formula:
"Die Quinti te kalo Iuno Covella"

This day is also dedicated to Ceres, tutelary deity of the month Sextilis.

Today is the Dies Natalis of the temple of Spes (Hope).

Today is the Dies Natalis of a temple of Victoria.

For the faithful of the cult of the Divi Imperatores:
This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.
Today, a sacrifice of a bull is offered to Divus Augustus at His "new
temple". It celebrates the victory of Augustus over Marcus Antonius and
Cleopatra at the battle of Actium, as well as the ensuing conquest of
Alexandria.

Pax Deorum vobiscum

Antonius Gryllus Graecus
Pontifex

From: jmath669642reng@--------

Salve, Titus Curius;

I know that this will probably sound corny, but here in NR, my best
guide has been the Roman Virtues. When I am tempted to remind someone
how smart I have been or what I have accomplished, I remember Prudentia,
when I am tempted to disagree publicly, I try to exercise Concordia, and
when I want to lose my temper over someone's seeming stupidity I try to
remember Patentia and Clementia.

Now I really don't think any of this will make you or me any smarter,
but it makes you seem smarter by not opening your mouth and convincing
everyone that you are not very smart at all. Consideration for the
feelings of others always pays off, if not in the short cycle, always in
the long run. Let some of the Roman Virtues also speak for you such as
Industria, Veritas, and Dignitas, and keep your lips closed, and your
clever remarks behind your teeth, since you never know who is listening.

Recently a man whom I have known for several years now, who is a very
good and industrious gentleman and who was responsible for giving me my
name, years ago, before I was even a member of Nova Roma. This man is a
good friend of mine, but he does not suffer fools lightly and when
somebody made a statement just a little too wise and a little too clever
this gentleman "lowered the boom"--just like "Clancy" in the old barroom
song. When I read the first man's clever remark, I knew what would
happen and it did.

My friend Titus, there is always someone ready to "lower the boom", and
rightly or wrongly, it is usually best to at least appear dignified, and
quiet. Listen, for when your mouth is open, your ears are shut, and
what you want to hear may never be said. Will all this make you
smarter? Probably not, but it will make you appear that way. Am I
alwys successful at this exercise? Ohh no. I can be just a dumb as the
next guy and I often forget that harsh words of the moment can have
lasting effects in ways I have no measure of determining. Knowing you
should wash behind your ears doesn't always insure a clean head, and
knowing that Prudentia is the best way to go does not always shut the
mouth. The bright spot here is that I am getting better, and who knows
, in another twenty or thirty years ------- (Grin!!!!!).

Vale, Respectfully;
Marcus Audens

Hmmm... I've offered them coffee before now. It was not too well received.
With bewilderment, in fact, was my impression. I find they prefer wine (even
first thing in the morning).

course). Didn't do my insanity any harm at all...
