Salve!

I am not in, or from, Australia Provincia but I do want to
welcome you to Nova Roma. I pray that you have a long and
happy relationship with Nova Roma and make many friends here.
Your work in the Archeology Department sounds interesting.
The closest I did during my time was logging slides. LOL.
Once again -- Welcome to Nova Roma.

research and classify a collection of Roman pottery sherds from
Britain and Syria circa Late Imperial period. Its difficult and
time-consuming, but great fun! Lack of information is the biggest
hurdle. It seems Roman pottery takes a back seat to Greek vases in
the
publishing stakes (My university library would have 10 books on Greek
pottery to every one on Roman). Still, it makes for a challenge!

Salve,

If you're a gamer, I recommend any of the Civilization series (Nothing
like wiping out the Carthaginians, though a "salt the earth" command should
be included), or the very excellent Caesar III, which is like Sim Rome.
Both excellent games, with good historical foundations.

Didn't like Age of Empires 1, so can't say anything about 2. :-)

Salvete omnes

This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.

This is the 3rd day of the festival of Ceres.

Today is the Fordicidia. Thirty pregnant cows (one 'forda' for each Curia)
are sacrificed in separate temples in honor of Tellus, the earth-goddess for
whom this day is sacred. After the victimarii (butchers who assist the
sacrifice) have taken the calves from the belly of their mother and entrails
have been cut and offered in the altar fire, the Chief Vestal burns the
foetuses whose ashes are the ingredient for the fumigations of April 21.

Also, don't forget that the month of Aprilis is sacred to Venus.

Please keep us posted on your games -- it'd be great if you could write
up something like a sports report on the action, something like Q. Fabius
Maximus did (although you don't *have* to do a play-by-play).

A munus is very appropriate! You can keep the dedication simple, if you
like -- or more elaborate, if you prefer (again, see what Q. Fabius
Maximus wrote for Ceres). All you have to do is "get her attention"
first, by naming her and who she is, where she is, that kind of thing;
then explain to her that you are dedicating your games to her and what
you'd like in return. (Maybe just a fruitful year, either literally or
figuratively.)

Thank you so much for sharing your games with us!!!

Again, if anyone else has experience creating virtual games (or
role-playing), your assistance would be most appreciated. Personally, I
think I lack the imagination to create it from scratch, although I could
describe it well were it before my eyes.

I'm really sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but the "Rise of
Rome" Expansion set only works with "Age of Empires 1". I just recently
purchased "Age of Empires - Gold" which comes with "Age of Empires" and the
expansion set "The Rise of Rome" for $30.

While I'm a former English teacher, I don't get picky about punctuation,
spelling, etc. unless it's so bad it's distracts from the story. If
you're submitting by email, you may either submit the entire piece in a
post, but if you send it as an attachment, please put it in .txt or .rtf
format first. There are no length requirements, but no book-length
submissions, please. We have only six days to read and judge all the
entries.

M. Lucius Sulla will be helping me judge the entries, and if anyone else
would like to assist, an odd number will prevent a hung jury. (hint,
hint)

Again, the deadline, April 27, is fast approaching, so get those pencils
sharpened and start writing!

My mistake -- and with much humility and apologies -- I misnamed the
other judge (inexcusable!) as M. Lucius Sulla, when I meant to say M.
*Cornelius* Sulla.

Sincerest apologies to Sulla and the Gens Cornelius.

Nope The Roman Addition is for Age of Empires one....

Age of Empires two is the better game... And takes place in the medieval
ages

But AOE 1 is still a great game ... And takes place in the time of
Ancients...

Of course, there is no historical evidence for the supposed 'salting the

Salvete Omnes!

Two grammatical (or at least orthographical and
phonological) points for fellow Latin pedants:

I was rather surprised by the fact that it was recently
proposed to mark the long vowels in the Roman rituals with
circumflexes, since coding macrons is rather difficult. I
have no objection to this; it is also done with Romanised
Japanese on occasion. However, I want to remind everyone
that the ancient Romans sometimes (inconsistently and
fitfully) actually did mark long vowels with a supersign
called the APEX. The form of these apices was very close to
that of the modern acute accent. There would be no harm in
using these again, and they are easily codeable, being used
in French and a few English words from French, e.g.
"fiancé". The only problem might be that in some Catholic
materials the acute is used to indicate the ictus accent,
not the vowel length per se. But surely one could clarify
that to the reader and so use the original Roman mark.

Names such as Nicolaus and Iaroslaus are rather special in
their terminations, and are declined (and here the acute
indicates an accent, not necessarily a long vowel): Nom.
"Nícolaus" ("-laus" = 1 syllable), Gen. "Nicholái" (4
syllables), Dat. "Nicoláo" (4), Acc. "Nicoláum (4), Abl.
"Nicoláo" (4), Voc. "Nícolae" (4, i.e. Ni-co-la-e). It is
disturbing to contemplate an accent on the syllable *before*
the antepenult (!), but this is indeed so indicated in a
book by A. Schildknecht SMB entitled "Vivum Latinum:
Grammatica" (Hualien 1966/67), who devotes almost half a
page to this class of proper nominal ending. It is my belief
that this was a lapsus calami (the book is really a
published manuscript), and that the vocative is really
accented "Nicoláe", which would be consistent with the other
oblique-case accentuation. But at least about the
orthography there is no doubt and I have other sources. Does
anyone have any confirmation or disconfirmation about the
vocative accent, though?

Soon to be a citizen, I hope, I remain everyone's
