Salvete,

Could anyone help out this person? I am no expert on Roman
weddings and it sounds like she knows about what I do on the subject.

Is Crys still on this list? This sounds like a subject she
would know well.

I am writing a term paper for college about the wedding
ceremony during the
1st and 2nd centuries. I have many sources from novels
and periodicals,
but a brief statement from an existing Senator would be
wonderful source.
Any information you may know, perhaps passed down
stories, would be very
appreciated. Thank you very much for your time.

Salve, Fellow Romans!

A short while back, Drusus Cornelius Claudius posted a note on this list,
asking citizens what their dreams were for Nova Roma. I had put off
responding, pending confirmation of my citizenship. I was a bit sad to see
the subject was not picked up by others. But better late than never.

One reason I joined Nova Roma may perhaps be considered by some as ignoble.
It was to thumb my nose, to "flip the bird", so to speak, at the
"multiculturalists", who are happily balkanizing my macronation, the USA. My
country has no common culture anymore. We, as Americans {I know several Nova
Romans are not living in America} have no common identity to share, no common
values, not even a common language. All attempts to make English the official
language are fought on the grounds of "multiculturalism" and "sensitivity", bu
t when a Texas town passes an ordinace that Spanish is their official
language, and threatens to fire any town employees who cooperate with the
INS, this is "ethnic pride".
"Hey hey ho ho, Western Civ has got to go!" has been a rally cry on the
campuses of American universities. Instead, differences between people are
emphasized and glorified. The result is a nation with less and less of a
common culture and identity. Aside from consumerism and shopping malls, what
do the 'American people' really have in common?

Well, if "multiculturalism" is the name of the game, ok then. If it is
alright for everyone else, it is alright for me. I am a white male heir to
the wonderful heritage of the Classical world or Greece and Rome, and damn
pleased to be one. I have no interest or desire to malign or look down on
other people or their backgrounds. How can I, when my wife is an Asian from
the Philippines? I know very well that the world is larger than the West.
But the West is still here, and deserves respect and study too.

And this is where Nova Roma comes in. Why only read about classical
civilization when one can be a part of its modern revival?

I will end here for now. No one likes to get a book in his mailbox! But I
hope this can start some conversation on our goals and ambitions and values,
as well as strategies for getting there.

I'm in fact using this address in order to position myself in the calendar
and obtain some of the information, specially in what regards the
classification of days as fasti or other. Nevertheless, this is not the only
reference I use and filter, for it contains some errors (be careful when
consulting!!!). For example, the author fails to grasp that the meaning of
NP in days of special religious observance is not unknown, meaning simply
"nefastus publicus". I also use the Nova Roman calendar as a source, for
though it is not as "attractive", it contains more reliable information
taken mainly from Scullard's "Festivals and ceremonies of the Roman
Republic" and the Dictionary of Roman Religion. Another very
importancereference I use (and in fact have to translate from French) is R.
Turcan's "Rome et ses dieux".

Salve, Citizen Elizebeth Rie Mason;

Greetings to you and to your Gens. I read your message on the Onelist
and I hope the following is of some small use to you;

Marriage--

Roman marriage was monogamus. A full Roman marriage could only occur if
both parties were Roman Citizens or had been granted "conubium." The
minimum legal age for marriage was 12 for females and 14 for males, but
in practice age at marriage tended to be higher. In early times a
formal betrothal (sponsalia) usually occurred before marriage. Some
children were betrothed at a young age by their fathers. Until 44BC
Patricians could not marry Plebians, and a free person could not marry a
freedman or freedwoman until legislation under Augustus made it
permissable (except for Senators).

Roman marriage was a private act resting on the intial consent of the
partners. What was necessary in marriage was the living together of a
man and woman with the intention of forming a lasting union. There were
no prescribed formulas or words or written contract (except for
dowries). There were marriage ceremonies, but these carried no legal
status although they did indicate that the relationship was a marriage.
The law was primarily interested in the legitimacy of the children, and
so needed to know if there was a valid marriage. A dowry (dos) was also
an indicaton that the relationship was a marriage. Dowries were moral
but not legal requirements.

In early times, a woman passed into her husband's control (manus) on
marriage and was "in manu" (in manu mariti). By the end of the
republic, the woman tended to remain in the power of her father (sine
manu--without control) as long as he lived and was not integrated into
her husband's family. Under the empire, marriage became unpopular and
the birthrate fell, and so Augustus granted privelages to parents of
three or more children--"ius trium liberorum" (right of three children).

"Confarreatio" was the oldest amd most solemn form of marriage, from
which it was virtually impossible to become divorced. It was apparently
confned to certain priesthoods. The "flamen dialis" and "pontifex
maximus" were present at the ceremony, and a cake made of "far" (grain)
had some significance. Other marriage ceremonies commonly took place in
June, and included various rituals such as sacrifice and a wedding
feast.

Barony of Settmour Swamp - Quest XVII
Fri - Sat - Sun - Mon - May 26 & 29 - 2000

If you can't be at "Roman Days" in June; how about
some of us Nova-Romans getting together near
Flemington, New Jersey, on May 27 & 28 ?
There has been discussion in the past about a
NovaRoma gathering in the Mid-Atlantic Region and
although it is only two weeks before Roman Days;
those of you who can not make it down to Maryland
may want to consider the Quest XVII.
There would be time for a "Roman" conclave and
possibly some pre-discussion of the matters to be
considered at Roman Days.

I am willing to work as a laison between the Barony
and NovaRoma to arrange for our needs.
Please advise Gallio Velius Marsallas aka

The "Quest" is an outdoor team-hunt for clues and
information which leads to the solving of the Quest's
secret message and goal. It is a ton of fun.

Legion XXIV will have a presence there and would
welcome any other Romani who could attend with us.

Salvete,

My thanks to the words of welcome posted hear and sent privately!

Well met again Lucius Fimbria. It is nice to see that you have
survived the campaigns yet again!

And to Helena Cornelia Ovidia,

Maybe, as C. Aelius Ericus hinted at, it's time we had a "Roman Days"
here in California. Legio XX in Maryland is having all the fun! We
used to host a Roman Days but it was at an SCA War. This was pre-Nova
Roma and about the only folk that attended were ourselves.

I am currently working on a "Military Through The Ages" project, but
I believe that a two day event focusing on things Roman might better
serve.

For my part I can get a greater attendance if the event allows
camping especially if we are to gather in the LA area. However, there
is a 2 day Faire in June to which Legio IX Hispana and its SCA
version The 9th Legion is invited. It's usually held the same weekend
as Legio XX Roman Days... Die Romanii Occidentalis??

Planting seeds...

Thats an excellent idea. Where should it be located? I would be happy to

What should we do to get this started?
