Subject: In search of the Eagle, Chapter X

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the cross-posting.

I am really not sure who I should email about this anymore.
To make it quick, last September, I sent 10£ cash by registered mail to
England for an Eagle sub. No one from Nova Roma ever received it because the
address for the Eagle in London that was posted on the Nova Roma was
incorrect (and no contact name was given). Fine, honest mistake but still
have lost the 10£ plus the 5£ that it cost me to send the cash by registered
mail.

Then Audens and Patricia Cassia graciously decided to give me an Eagle sub
for free. I graciously accepted and in return sent a USD check for $15.00 to
the US so that Nova Roma wouldn't have to take any losses.

So now, it is mid-March and I still have not received any Eagle. And I don't
think that it is Audens or Claudia Aprica that are taking care of the Eagle
anymore. I am a very patient person (long lines and traffic jams do not make
me nervous) but I think that after 8 1/2 months and 45 USD, anyone would be
annoyed.

As some may remember, I was in favor of Nova Roma charging membership fees
in order to help Nova Roma grow. Now I am beginning to reconsider. If in 8
1/2 months, one person still hasn't received her subscription, then how
confused would things get if the 150 or so citizens started sending in
money...

Avete!

I am Gaius Valerius Tacitus Hibernicus of Legio IX Hispana operating
out of Southern California.

I just signed up with Nova Roma this morning and I hope you will see
more of our members signing up over the next few weeks!

We've been involved in Roman military reenactment for 5 years. Most
of our soldiers are also members of the SCA which has been able to
provide us a venue for our "expression" as well as an oppportunity to
put the military equipment to the test. We set up a large Roman camp
and can field 25 men and women in arms.

Our webite, www.legio-ix-hispana.org is currently undergoing a
metamorphosis to relfect our reawakened interest in serious Roman
reenactment.

Salvete,
Hibernicus

Salve, G. Valerius Tacitus Hibernicus!
C. Aelius Ericius welcomes you to Nova Roma.

I found your Legion on the web before Nova Roma was born, and I
was worried for the Legio IX fate during a period of time when the URL

stopped going anywhere. There are a number of citizens in S. Calif,
I hope all of you will be able to get in contact with each other. The

current governor of California Provincia lives in Los Angeles. That
is Ovidia Helena, Propraetrix. I expect she will soon contact you
with
her information and an invitation for the provinical mail list. That
list is
very, very quiet, but it is an additional channel.

I was Propraetor of California Provincia until last December when I
stepped down. I had a short exposure to SCA a number of years ago.
I could always see the presence of a group like the Leg IX Hisp being
similar to the focal point for Nova Roma get togethers in the same
way as the Legio XX in Maryland is. They have a Roman Days in
June of each year, which has been the closest thing to an annual
convocatio that Nova Roma has had in its few years of existence.

I've rattled on enough for now. May Fortuna bless you and your
Legion.

Vale.
C. Aelius Ericius

My Roman name is Quintus Gaufridus Canus, and I just joined Nova roma a
few days ago. I have been interested in ancient Rome since childhood. I
can read Latin at about a third-year High School level (I taught myself).
Religion-wise, I practice a reconstruction of Christianity as practiced
by ancient Roman Christians (with Mary as a sort of Mother-Goddess
somewhat akin to Isis), reconstructed using ancient Roman era texts as
sources. I practice as a full-time priest of this faith (I am aordained
by the U.L.C.). My gens is Gaufrida, which is the latinised form of my
real first-name, 'Jeffrey', according to the Collins Latin Gem
dictionary. My cognomen, Canus, means "grey" and is based on my real
last name 'Graham' which is Old English for 'Grey House'.

Salve Gaius Valerius Tacitus Hibernicus!

I am very happy to learn of a new, active and interested
Califoria citizen! (We have about 25 citizens in California
but only a third of those are even a little active.)
I soon plan to begin organizing a meeting here in southern
California to take place in April and we would love to have
you there!

-Helena Cornelia Ovidia
Propraetrix of California
& Rogator

Is this book anything like the other Latin learning series by Bolchazy
Publishing, both standard & CD version, that is fashioned more for
teenagers, or is it more of a college level book in approach and context.
