Salvete, My Friends;

Let me offer you my congratulations and felicitations for your weddig
plans. I am afraid that I won't be able to offer you much about Roman
Weddings customs but my blessing. As Venator so eloquently said, may
you have the happiness and security that I have found in my marriage
these last 38 years.

Blessings on you both;

Salve Patricia Cassia . Quaestor, Nova Roma
As for information on Roman marriage, Cornelius Nepos in "De Historicis
Latinis"
is good for some info: Before historical times two forms of marriage had been
in Rome. One, coemptio, was a form of wife purchase, it was at first observed
mainly among the lower class of the Plebs. The other involved a solemn
religious ceremony performed by two senior priests, the Flamen Dialis and the
Ponlifex Maximus. (Talk about a conflict of interest at your marriage!)
This was marked by the exchange of wafers made wheat and was called
confarreaho, and was strictly binding divorce being practically impossible.
The aristocracy of early Rome mainly observed this form of marriage.
This was a strongly marked oral tradition of matrimony
.Marriages by bride-purchase had some religious flavor, for of
the copper coins, asses, were brought by the bride, two of
were given to the household lares. The bridegroom kept
the third coin. It was a symbolic dowry.

Catullus explains that Roman Marriages occurred in the evening. The bride
would appear in her father's or paterfamilias doorway in a long white robe
with a woolen girdle fashioned in the knot of Hercules, her veil, hair net
and shoes were also red. (Red pumps?) The bride's hair was parted into six
separate strands by a spear-shaped comb (A rat tail comb in your case?),
three on either side of her face, because this was preferred by Vesta, and
this style was worn by the Vestals.
The she was then lead by the Goddess Juno to her new home. Except that Juno
was represented by "pronubae" matrons who had only been married once. A
torch bearing group of relatives led the way. A gay procession of well
wishers (sounds like a bunch of drunks to me) accompanied her to the groom's
house. There at his house she anointed the door with scented oil and adorned
the doorposts with woolen fillets, then she was lifted over the threshold
while the wedding party called "Talisso!".
She would be given the gifts of fire, (a lit candle) & water. She would join
hands with the bridegroom, and a victim had to be sacrificed to Jupiter.
(Maybe a release of a pigeon, for your nuptials?) If the victim's auspices
were favorable the two were married. Cat. doesn't say what happened if the
omens were unfavorable! (She runs sobbing back to Pater?)

Then there was a feast, afterwards the couple would retire to consummate the
wedding, the occasion being enlivened by bawdy songs and ribald comments of
the well wishers outside the bed chamber!

Salve,

Thanks to Ericius for providing an interesting site! This brings to mind the
fact that we have our own Amazon.com associate bookstore right in the
Macellum... and we could do even better than the above site I think. For
instance, the Herculaneum Bookstore has no titles concerning the Religio
Romana, and I also don't see *several* books on other subjects that could
easily be included.

If our new webmaster, Gnaeus Tarquinus Caesar, would be willing to work on
the Nova Roma bookstore at some point I volunteer to assist! I actually was
able to put up an Amazon.com bookstore at my Julian Society site even though
I don't know much about web pages:
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/1568/index.html

This is definitely a project to think about since it would provide money to
the NR treasury without us having to disburse funds which we don't really
have.

My colleague having scooped me again on the results of the Senate's

of any who might be interested that there is an old (pub. 1888) text on
"The Development of the Roman Constitution" at auction on eBay. The

The author, Ambrose Tighe, is described as having been a tutor and

the auction ends at 10:15:56 PST on Sunday.

I would bid on it myself except that, being currently involved in moving

If I remember right, much or almost all of "traditional weddings" is
Roman pagan in origin --- exchanging of rings, the cake, giving the
bride away, carrying over the threshold ( but I believe the bride offers
a coin to the houshold Lar during this time). The only thing that varies
is the wedding procession from the wedding to the couples house--- I
think the bride was carried by bearers on --- What did they call those
platforms? and I think surrounded on the platform by flowers??? Possibly
people in the procession played some kind of music I think and then once
the couple got to the grooms house the procession/wedding party would
act just like as if a couple had eloped instead today and their hideout
was found---- with a whole lot of noise and wracket in a fun festive
atmosphere outside the house.

I found a websight or maybe a book about 2 years ago on the subject
and I was amazed how much things really haven't changed in two and a
half millenium.

Salvete all Roman pagani!

Remember to honor Ianus and Fortuna this day!

Tomorrow morning for the Kalendae remember to honor
and offer to Ianus Consivius for the New Year. It is
traditional at your household Lararium to burn a
little spelt wheat cake and bay leaf with a drop or
two of honey (this is the "Ianual," sacred to Ianus.)
Offer this cake and a few grains of frankincense at
your Lararium altar.

The following is a prayer in Italian that can be said
to Ianus before making the offering:

"SALVE GIANO CONSIVIO (adoratio)! TUE CHE PROPAGHI IL
GENERE UMANO, FA' CHE LE GENTE ROMANE ED ITALICHE
CRESCANO NEL NUMERO E NELLA PIETAS SOTTA LA TUA REGALE
TUTELA. PEK CIO ACCOGLI QUESTA MIA OFFERTA GIANUALE
CHE ID TI OFFRO CON CUORE PURO. COSI VUOI, COSI E!"

After this continue on with prayers to your gens
deity(ies), the Lar and Penates, and your Genuis/Iuno
and lastly Vesta. Remember throughout the day on
January 1st, to where white clothing, for purity in
honor of the new year. Exchange and eat sweets, for a
sweet, happy and prosperous New Year!

And as the Romans would say "ANNUM NOVUM FAUSTUM
TIBI!"

Salvete Cives Novae Romae!!

It is my final day of office as consul. At 12:01 AM Roman Time,
January 1 (6:01 PM EST, 31 December), the new magistrates take office. I
wish them all well as they lead Nova Roma through the coming year. They
are an able group of people and will serve well.

This has been a momentous year for Nova Roma. It has seen our
nascent Republic almost fall apart in the "Civil War" and yet it has seen
great progress as well. Our population has doubled during this period, and
during the dictatorship, our political and religious system was
strengthened ( in some areas rebuilt from scratch) and are functioning as
they were designed. The months since the dictatorship have seen
unprecedented stability, with a government that I think has re-earned the
confidence of the Nova Roman People.

Something that I think helped earn that confidence was the obvious
strong working relationship that I had with my co-consul, Lucius Cornelius
Sulla Felix, who has seen a fortunate and well deserved turn around in his
status in Nova Roma. As Consul, Sulla Felix worked tirelessly to increase
the lines of communication between the government and the People. His aid
has also been invaluable in the creation of the new laws that we drafted
and passed. I thank him as friend and colleague for his efforts as
consul and I wish him well as my successor as censor. Ave Lucius
Cornelius Sulla Felix!!

In addition to Sulla Felix, In parting let me also thank some other
Nova Romans who have worked with me on behalf of Nova Roma this year:
Flavius Vedius Germanicus, for his monumental effort during the
dictatorship and since. Marcus Cassius Iulianus for his work as Pontifex
Maximus and censor; Gaius Marius Merullus and Titus Labienus Fortunatus
for their tireless work as rogatores and for the advice they have given at
every stage of the political process. Marcus Minucius Audens, for his
invaluable work on the budget and as praetor, senator and friend. Outgoing
governor of California Caius Aelius Ericius for his work as
Propraetor since last year and for his efforts in the senate as a
fair-minded Roman. All the Senators and magistrates who have served with
honor and distinction this year. Avete!!

Thank you each and every one of you who have participated in the life of
Nova Roma, especially those of you who participated in the last election
of the year and thank you one and all who have expressed confidence and
support in us.

Again, I believe we end this year with Nova Roma stronger, and more
stable. We hand over the reins of a government that is better equipped
than ever to face the future.

Ave Nova Roma!!!!

Gratias vestri ago, omnes!! Gratias Omnes di Romae!!

Valete,

Decius Iunius Palladius,
Senior Consul, 1999 CE (2752 A.U.C.)

Salvete Omnes,

Well this monumental year is now drawing to a close. In this year we
have witnessed many events that will probably affect Nova Roma for many
years to come. Hopefully most of those wounds have healed or are now
beginning to heal. I know that I have been involved in many of the
events of this year, and I hope that I have, during my Consulship,
helped begin in the healing process. My primary goal, when I was
elected Consul of Nova Roma was to help build confidence in the system
and I just wanted to thank personally, Decius Iunius Palladius Invictus,
who has emerged victorious from a tumultuous year, for his efforts in
guiding me on a fast track and helping me catch on speed during my 3
month tenure as Consul. It would have been impossible to accomplish any
of my agenda without his assistance and guidance!

While I would like to be able to say that I have accomplished everything
I wanted to for Nova Roma, that would not be truthful. While many of
the tasks that Palladius Invictus and I accomplished were necessary and
prudent, I am also aware of some tasks that didn't get completed, such
as
the new chatroom and the Dues Legislation. However, if there is only
one way the Consulship of Decius Iunius Palladius Invictus and my
consulship will be remembered it would be this: we showed just how much
work can be accomplished when there are two colleagues who genuinely
value each other's opinions, judgments and ultimately friendships.

I hope that the upcoming Consuls will look upon their predecessors in
office and will remember the choices and decisions they make affect not
only them but everyone in Nova Roma and that the spirit of camaraderie
continues.

Long Live the Res Publica!

In Aosta Valley, where I originated, let´s spell it correctly, Augusta

of celtic origins, we still salute each other in new year´s day with the

there is the creiscein, a sweet bread covered with sugar and honey in
