Might you be gotten to share some of these ideas and proposals with
us...? I believe this is what the questioner was looking for in the
candidates' responses when he asked what they actually planned to *do*
if elected Praetor. What have you got in mind?

Ah! --That *does* put a different face on things; and with that
clarification, your objection makes perfect good sense to me. What you
must understand, however, is that it is not always (or even usually)
like this; our candidates for this year are campaigning in mid-voting
period because they have had precious little other time to do it!

Last year's electioneering began a good couple of months before the
actual election, IIRC; you might like to check with your worthy
opponent Antonius Gryllus Graecus on the exact date, as it was he who
fired the first salvo! >({|;-) ...Anyway, it started in
September-ish; the October edition of the Eagle was an election
special, as previously-mentioned, with profiles and platforms of the
candidates, and photos of several of them; so by the time the voting
started we all knew who was running and what they were about--we hoped!

This year, OTOH, we had a Constitutional crisis over the summer which
resulted in a vacancy in the Consulship; upon recovery we had to elect
a Consul, which resulted in our losing a Praetor; so we had to hold
another interim election for the empty Praetorship; and that election
had scarcely been completed when our normal, annual elections for *all*
the magistracies were upon us. (Not to mention that a lot more
magistracies to be filled were created under the new Constitution!)
So, with three elections back-to-back, the time for campaigning has
been extremely compressed; why, we didn't even know who all the
candidates were going to be until the last possible minute before the
ballot could be made up!

I think this illustrates something we might all wish to be a little
more careful of, especially those of us who are fairly new to Nova
Roma: Before criticizing 'the way things are', take a look around and
ask yourself:
-- Is it really that way, or does it only seem so to me?
-- Has it always been that way?
-- If not, how was it before, and how and why has it changed?

Then get out there and ask some of the long-term Citizens the last two
questions. (Or post it to the List; we'll help ya!) This will help
you to place what you are seeing in context; which in turn will help
you (and all of us) develop the long-haul perspective that was such a
part of Roman law and the Roman character. It'll also put you in
contact with some really great people!
