I believe that SPQR, by bizarre Roman logic, actually stands for Senatus
Populusque Romanus, which would seem to defy the simplest rule of Latin

Salvete,

I am just getting around to sharing this too cute experience we had
with Terry Wednesday night.

After dropping the older 2 off with their mother we went to a local
mall to pick up a thing or two for Saturnalia. We were wandering
around when Terry saw Saturn!!! He was, as usual, under the mis-
conception that he was this guy named Santa. Guess the
hypnotherapy isn't working yet <G>.

Well, this little girl elbowed 4 kids and 3 parents out of her way,
marched right up to this guy (who actually had a REAL beard and
mustache), said "Saturn" and invited herself to climb up into his
lap. He look a bit perplexed, being marched up to like he wasn't
the horrible, coal-giving, be good or you get the switch Santa the
other children in line thought he was (two little girls were in tears
with the fear of seeing this guy). and so just sort of picked her up
automatically. He also didn't seem to understand the name she
called him (he STILL thinks he's Santa, but Terry corrected that for
him <G>).

Once he recovered, he reminded us that there WAS a line (like
Terry cared) and asked if we were staying for pictures. We
declined, hoping to give the retailers some money before they
closed for the night.

And so Terry (aka Prime Iunia Terrelina) has had her first
experience with Saturn. She likes him but wishes he knew who he
was <G>. Perhaps next year she will be old enough to tell him his
true identity <G>.

...et respondeo:
Yup, SPQR = Senatus Populusque Romanus...and actually there is no
inconsistency here in terms of noun/adjective agreement; 'Senatus',
Populus', and 'Romanus' all agree, and the maverick '-que' is merely a
suffix that means 'and'. The phrase could just as easily have been
"Populus Senatusque...", 'People and-Senate...'

Another Latin suffix is '-ne' as part of a statement (to turn it into a
question-phrase; they didn't have punctuation back then!): "Tune
iocationem facis" = 'You're kidding, right?' I think there might be
others, but they elude me at the moment... Suffixes do not get
declined (their 'endings' don't change, since they *are* endings
themselves).

Heilsa (or as you Romans say Salve),

I am Marcus Virginius Julianus, Pater familias of Gens Virginia. I know I
know it is a relatively obscure gens that probably no one knows or ever
really cares about. I am writing this because I feel that Barbarians are
not getting any coverage in Nova Roma. In the days of Rome, the Barbarians
were supposedly conquered by Rome and eventually sacked the very city that
claimed rulership over them. My question is this, how can Nova Roma exist
without other cultures being involved as well? Toward that end, I introduce
myself. I may be a paterfamilias in Nova Roma, but I am also what you would
consider a barbarian. I do not hold allegiance to the Gods of Rome, but
neither do I willingly displease them. I am a follower of the Viking Gods,
and I seek other "barbarians" to join my Gens. I want Gens Virginia to
become the Barbarians Gens.

Well we did have a barbarian, who used to post fairly regularly, and he was
more active than some of our Civies in the Taverna (chatroom) as well. His
name was Vercingetorix. He was very enjoyable and posted some very humorous
posts. Hopefully he might return.... On another point we do have citizens
who believe in the Norse Gods, such as our Censor and Webmaster Flavius
Vedius Germanicus and our elected Quaestor Venator, who happens to be my
personal assistant. I am sure there are others in Nova Roma who share your
interest. As a matter of fact, there might be some ways in which you can,
perhaps create a Sodalicum in regards to your interests, since Nova Roma's
period of interest definitely coincides with your own interests. Perhaps
you could look into that?

Hi Audens,
I am very impressed that your name means "daring
and bold". In honor of that, I think that you
should have an anthem of your very own and so I
have written one for you.

It's set to the music of "Joxer the Mighty" a
tune for the brave hero "Joxer" (from the tv
series "Xena, Warrior Princess")

Audens the Mighty,
He is so Brave and Bold,
He is really tough,
He knows lots of stuff,
He's Audens.... He's Audens the Mighty!

Audens the Brave hero,
He's nothing like Nero,
He is really cool,
He should open a Roman school,
He's Audens.... He's Audens the Mighty!

That's it!

Subject: ATTN-DEX--Uxbridge, MA Gathering
From: Jenni Hunt moonloon@--------
Date: Sat, 27 Nov 1999 20:31:33 -0500
Salvete omnes!

I hope no one minds if I take some initiative in organizing this gathering,
as I live so close by Uxbridge -- about 15 miles. This evening, I visited
the Quaker Motor Lodge, and it seems to be a very nice Mom-and-Pop,
family-owned kind of place. If you plan to attend and haven't yet made
reservations, I suggest you do so and let them know that you'll be with the
Nova Roma group so maybe they can book everyone in adjoining rooms near the
meeting room. The phone number is (508) 278-2445 and if you want to check
them out, the website is <www.quakermoterlodge.com>.

I can't be there Friday night, as I have an office party that evening in
Providence; if anyone would care to join us there (we'll be a LeCav in
Providence) and/or spend the night at my place, please email me and maybe
we can arrange something. If you're coming from the south, you'll be going
right past where I live, but it's only a one-bedroom apartment and houses
three cats in addition to me.

The meeting room has plenty of space for up to a couple dozen people. The
owner says to just let him know what tables, chairs, etc. we'll be needing
and he'll see that it's set up for us. It has ice and snack machines in
it, as well as a wood stove (I think) at one end. It's a cozy room and
will cost us $50 for the day (unless we actually book 10-12 rooms, in which
case we can have it free of charge, but that's rather optimistic, I
think.). We'll probably have to divide the cost of the room amongst
ourselves this time.

I was thinking we'd spend the day Saturday in the meeting room, beginning
with an opening ritual. I've already begun outlining a blessing rite for
the gathering, and I hope the Cassii will assist me in preparing and
celebrating this rite on Saturday morning. (Cassius -- I need your phone
number!!) It'd be nice to have some sort of schedule or agenda so that we
can prepare and know what to expect and bring with us. I know that there
was some mention of discussing flags, coins, and such. I also think we
need to have brainstorming sessions on local outreach, future event
planning, and maybe meeting together at other New England festivals and/or
reenactments. We could also have presentations on Roman clothing, Roman
cooking, Religio Romana, and such. I'd like to do a presentation on Roman
hearth beliefs and practices, if there's interest in it. (It would be
similar to one I did at Wellspring last spring.) Saturday evening we could
go out to eat and then reconvene back in the meeting room for music,
fellowship, story-telling, etc.

Then Sunday, we could meet elsewhere (after checking out) for breakfast
and/or more discussions and/or presentations. I was thinking that I could
have folks over to my place on Sunday, if folks are up for it. Again, it's
not the Taj Mahal, but I can host a small gathering of six to ten people,
if there's interest. I suppose we could have dinner together, if no one's
in a big hurry to get back home. I'm going to need to know ahead of time,
however, so that I can prepare for it. So email me privately if you're
interested in hanging around a bit on Sunday.

Lastly, for now, directions . . .

Directions from the North and/or East: Take 95 South to 90 (Mass Pike)
west to the 146 exit (yes, there is one now -- work on it was completed
this summer, so it might not be on your maps, but there is one). Driving
south on Route 146, take the 146A, Chockalog Road, Uxbridge exit. (If you
find yourself in Rhode Island, you've gone too far.) Turn left at the end
of the exit ramp and you'll see the lodge on your left.

Directions from the West: Take 90 East (Mass Pike) to the 146 exit (yes,
there is one now -- work on it was completed this summer, so it might not
be on your maps, but there is one). Driving south on Route 146, take the
146A/Chockalog Road, Uxbridge exit. (If you find yourself in Rhode Island,
you've gone too far.) Turn left at the end of the exit ramp and you'll see
the lodge on your left.

Directions from the South: Take 95 North to Providence where you will pick
up Route 146 North just past the new Providence Place Mall (the Filene's
sign is the most prominent now, as it is still under construction).
Continue on 146 north past Woonsocket to the 146A/Uxbridge exit. Turn left
at the end of the ramp and the lodge is about 1 1/2 miles on the right.

I do apologize for not having them posted already. I am preparing my report to you, the citizens on the mailing list. They were very enlightening. Many of the recommendations I have gotten I have and am currently trying to implement. Unfortunately, due to recent illnesses, flu and such, work and other life related issues I have had to postpone the completion and the posting of my article. However, now that everything is starting to lighten up, I will complete the article and post it on my next "weekend" off...which would be this Monday and Tuesday. The primary reason for writing this is to let everyone know that I have not forgotten about the surveys, and that I have been actively reading them and trying to incorporate them, as much as I can, for my term as Consul of Nova Roma. Finally, I feel that it is important that each of you who took the time to complete the survey's are aware that they do matter, and that the suggestions I have gotten are important.

I ask all of you, from all over the world, to run for an office in Nova Roma
if you can. Noone knows whether Nova Roma will grow to anyone's
expectations, but whatever the future holds, the good that can be done here
can only be if we actively pursue it. And Nova Roma will never be what YOU
want it to be, if YOU reading this leave it to someone else to shape.

Please, everyone in office now, run for another office for the coming year.
And we need new people for the offices of quaestor, aedilis (plebis and
curulis), and all the vigintisexviri. In a way, these lower offices are
just as important as the very highest. Not only are the lower offices more
functionally defined, but also, they are the training grounds for the

If you believe in Nova Roma and have even a few hours a week to give to her,
please consider running for office.
