I've said it before, but I need to say it again. Ullerius' mead manual is
nothing less than amazing (my only suggestion; put the next printing in
normal text, rather than all caps!). If you're at all interested in mead
(drinking or brewing), you need to have this small but wonderful reference.
Bravo, Ullerius, and I hope that your effort will be emulated by others.
Anyone want to make an armor-making handbook?

Hesitating to insert myself into this exchange, I have
nevertheless had to study this subject recently.
Scotland, like many another country, is an artificial
creation, bringing together, usually by force, several
disparate groups. First, of course, are the Picts, who
were the main group in Caledonia during the occupation
by Vetus Roma. Afterwards came invading groups of
Scots from Ulster who mostly occupied the highlands,
Britons (the Celtic peoples of Britannia) who occupied
Galloway, which is why surnames such as Walys and
Wallace (i.e., "Welsh") are so common there, Angles
who settled the lands to the SE of the Antonine
Wall--this area was once part of the Northumbrian
kingdom (which is why the language called "Scots" is
related to English, as it is an offshoot of Old
English), and the Norse, who settled the islands
around and about. I should say that "Scots" aren't
Irish, though the original "Scots" (who speak "Gaelic"
today as opposed to "Irish") came from the large
island called Eriu; nor are the "Welsh" in Galloway
from Wales--the two groups are merely descended from
Brittanic chieftains who managed to maintain their
lands against the Angles and Scots (a good bulk of
those called "English" are actually descended from the
original Keltic Brittanic population whose culture and
language was gradually extinguished by the invading
Angles and Saxons; indeed Cerdic of Wessex, from whom
descend Alf the Great and the British royal family,
was a Keltic Brittanic chieftain, as were his
successors for about a century after his death).

Valete.

Venii: I did the initial run in the Trajan font. But, I am in process of
editing for a possible small press commercial edition. I've had an offer to
review the manual by the ownwer of a couple of home brew shops in northern

Venii (raises hand a bit sheepishly), um, I'm working on an basic armoring
manual as a fund raiser for the Asatru Folk Assembly. As I have offered a
non-Roman edition of the Mead Manual to folks who don't want a donation
going to Romans (those monies go to the Odinic Rite copier fund), I shall
offer a non-Nordic edition for those Romans who would rather a donation to
Nova Roma instead. Publication is set for the Kalends of October. More
details to follow.

I am currently working on vinting a recreation of the Falernian. I think

Salve Salveteque,

At 05:37 PM 20/08/1999 EDT, Marcus Marcius Rex Gaio Mario Merullo scripsit
inter alia:
With regard to the Annals....well tempting, I would have to say IŽd be
interested in helping to compile the facts (together with Papirius who seems
to know the digestes by heart, something I could never even hope to achieve).
But I think Marcus Gangalius can be trusted to write these Annals "sine ira
et studio". His work was my only source for Nova Roma history and I found it
very well written and to the point.

Respondeo: you flatter me ... while I might know Justinian's Digest by
heart (or at least by liver, give or take a large section on inheritance
which never fails to put me to sleep), I hardly think myself qualified as
an annalist of Nova Roma primarily in terms of time -- I'm overwhelmed with
papyrus-work here in my Atrium (so many clientes, so little time. Besides,
Gangalius is, as you say, doing a fine job and I'm sure he will continue to
do the same.
