- Well, I don't know. One goes off-list for a couple or three days, and
returns to find the Society Wedding of the Year has happened 8 days ahead of
schedule. One's plans for preparing something clever (like an epithalamium)
shot down in flames... (sigh). We didn't want to air any congratulations

Still, now...

Like the festivals of Ceres, Liber, Libera, etc, Fortuna fasti were
celebrated by the entire population, not only plebeians, but I must say
specially by plebeians. Fortuna had a Temple on the Avenine, which has you
may know was under the responsibility of the Aediles Plebis.

Dear Antonio

The patriarch of Constantinople is the summit of the orthodox christian world, something like the pope of Rome, only he has seniority over the pope. What he exactly said is that the Acropolis of Athens should become the symbole of the nation, because Paul gave a discourse before the Athenians at the Areios Pagos. The christians are terrified at the possibility that the traditional Hellenic religious movement will manifest itself at the Olympics of 2004, and that we may ask to get our temples back.

Avete Omnes!

I shall be offline for 9 or 10 days. I am attending the Theodish
(Anglo-Saxon Heathenry, as differenced from mine own Nordic Heathenry)
Midsummer celebration in Watertown, NY and leave for there very early on the
16th. So, if anyone has anything for me which needs immediate attention.
mail it not later than 5PM Central tomorrow, the 15th.

My wife and I had three Theodish folk as houseguests last evening.
Hildiwulf, the immediate past High Steward was one. He has read the Nova
Roma website and liked the dedication he saw for the history, culture and
Religio. I would like to say his overall impression was "Well done." So,
Germanicus, Patricia, Gangalius, et alia - pat yerselves on the back.

Otherwise, I bid thee all, Work Hard - Play Safe - Live Well...

Well, old Marcus Audens (and I feel old after this weekend!!!) is back
home from the adventure in Maryland. It was a very nice event and quite
successful! The Marietta Mansion where the event was held is a lovely
old home, which had been owned by a lawyer in the early years of our
country and who ultimately became a Supreme Court Justice. The
buildings and the grounds were quite beautiful, and very well cared for.
The staff of the mansion bent over backward to assist us in every way,
and were never very far away in case we needed something.

On Saturday there were four legions in attendance (XXth, XXIVth, XIVth
and the IIIrd). The third came all the way from Louisiana!!! There were
15 fuuly armored, weaponed, and accoutered legoneries on site. There
were also an additional 6-9 people portraying civilians, etc. The
encampment was filled with weapon and accouterment displays, which was a
real testament to the abilities of these re-enactors, as those things
which, for the most part, we know about only as drawings or written
description, came alive in our hands, Clay oil lamps, pitchers. small
clay wine cups, palisade stakes, armor, shields, pila, coins, buckles
etc..

Cassius and Cassia presided over the Nova Roma Tent with a full array of
NR Materials and fliers with class and style. Cassius was in full dress
as a Senator with toga, purple stripes and red shoes. Cassia in a
lovely purple period gown. Consul Cinncinnatus was there as a soldier
of the XXth on Saturday, and dressed in a Consul's Tunic on Sunday.
There were sample issues of the Eagle on display, which drew a lot of
attention and much praise. We are very fortunate fellow NR's, in our
Eagle Editor!!! The famed "leather' tent of the XXth legion was pitched
in camp. There were some ladies and children in period dress in a
lean-to with bunches of wild seasonings hanging from the ridgepole, and
down on the lower grounds were some people with period things to sell.
Also on the lower grounds below the house was an arena set up for the
purpose of demonstration. There were four demo periods, two on Saturday
and two on Sunday.

Between visits to the demo field, all interacted with the visitors to a
great extent, and probably over the long weekend we had about 250-300
visitors. There were a lot of good questions and the visitors exhibited
a real interest in the topic of the Legions and of Rome. Marietta
Mansion provided a very nice announcing system which was used to explain
what was going on at the demo field, which was much appreciated by
visiitors.

The legionaries were very well trained and executed several difficult
field manuvers together with precision and effectiveness at each of the
field demos even tho in some cases they had not worked together before::

--testudo;
--battle advance;
--javelin throw;
--field drill and movement.

All the field commands were given in latin by the Commander of the XXth
Legio (Matthew Amt) who portrayed the rank of Optio. His frequent
explanation periods went a long way to let the visitors see with clarity
what was going on and why The Commander of the XXIVth was also in the
ranks, and all four legions set up excellent displays of weaponry,
tools, marching kits, and the more personal items of the soldier. One
of the demo periods was given over to Legio Olympics as the troops
competed in running with full armor, and the javelin throw..

There were also some one on one duals between legionaires which was
quite exciting and demonsrtrated as nothing else could the use of the
shield for throwing the enemy off balance. The equipment was all very
similar, but none of it exactly alike, which added to the authenticity
immeasureably. But primarily it was the usage in the field
demonstrations, of these weapons of war that gave a freshness and life
to the whole event. These soldiers were simply superb, and they stayed
on the field in armor with their weapons as long as there were
questions. Matthew Amt as the Optio was an expert in the ways of the
legions and assured everyone that we were invincable. It made me feel a
lot better I can tell you!!!! We had some ladies who cooked for the
legions which were much appreciated and the Pro-Praetor of the
South-East Province graced us with her presence for both days and was
welcome as well as lovely..

All in all my friends, this reporter believes the event was well worth
attending, exciting to be involved with, and most enlightening to listen
to or to watch. My personal thanks go to the four legios for their
excellence and their endurance rain or shine. I also much appreciate
meeting some of the NR members that I had not met before, and having the
opportunity to share ideas and interests.

Respectfully;
Marcus Audens.

Fair Winds and Following Seas!!!
