Greetings,

I was not suprised to see one of the topics on the mailing list when I
got home from work was that of our names and ancestors. After reading the
various replies, I quickly came to the conclusion that Caius Marius Merrulus
had hit the mark. We are not Romans, we are Nova Romans. I can speak only for
myself when I say that my choice of names comes ffrom not only a respect for
these long deceased men, but a love for them. I chose the praenomen Gnaeus in
honor of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, onthe grounds of his dedication to the
Senate and to his country, his loyalty to put it simply. I chose the family
nomen of Tarquinius in honor of Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, otherwise known as
Tarquin I. I chose this name not because I wish to be a king or even rule
over others, but because Tarquin I was one of the most kind, generous, and
most loving characters Roman History has given us, (not to say there weren't
others.) And finally I chose the cognomen Caesar because I do not see this
man the way most do. I see his clemency, his devotion & I believe that he was
misunderstood in his aims. I do not believe any of the above to be flawless,
and I do not strive to be like them in everyway. But I do look up to, love,
and deeply respect all of the above. I do not claim descendancy from any one
of them, I only wish to express my admiration of each's better qualities.
Caius Marius stated all of the above in general, I felt the need to put it
into a personal level for myself, Gnaeus Tarquinius Caesar. This desire was
prompted by the fact that this topic appeared on the board and also that our
Tribune of the People avoided using my Roman name at the top of the mailing
list, though he used everyone elses. I wish to be called Gnaeus Tarquinius
Caesar because I wish to revive the names of my gallant (chosen) ancestors,
and to honor their names with my words and deeds, to revive not the faults of
each, but the glorious acheivments they are also remembered for. I noly
assumed it was my right as a citizen of Nova Roma to revitalize the names I
saw fit for myself and to have those names respected by my fellow Countrymen,
if I was mistaken, please don't hesitate let me know.

With loving frowns,
Gnaeus Tarquinius Caesar

Hello and good day!

I saw several differant versions of the same event recently arrived
in my E-mail. As a new citizen of Nova Roma it is my duty to attend the
Celebrate History event this weekend. I am most certainly looking forward to
seeing th Legio X Fretensis as Lucius Marius Fimbria has recommended before
forming a mere three man legion of my own. I also saw someone say that there
would only be one Nova Roman there, wherever our table might be; I'll be
there all day Sunday if I can be of any assistance. I should finish my Toga
by then and am looking forward to meeting at least a few of you on the 11th.
I will be sure to keep my eyes peeled. Until then...

Ave dear Romans,
Gnaeus Tarquinius Caesar

RMerullo's idea has a lot of merit. I am best best set up for weekdays
as this is the season for weekend re-enactments. Thursdays and
Wednesdays are usually bad for me. Since I have no idea how months /
days are counted in the Roman Calendar, I would have to know in English
what date was selected. we could take in the exhibit, and have supper
together, and get to know each other a little better.

Perhps we coul d leave the cars at a parking area outside the city, and
take one car or the subway into the city. I'm not much on driving in
Boston, and from my tiny fund of experience, there does not seem to be a
great deal of parking available.

Apparently Steven Saylor thinks so, too. His "Catalina's Riddle," while
>it's fiction and speculative, seems more willing to give Catalina a bit
more impartial a view.

I must comment on this book here, even just briefly. It was in my mind an
excellent book and brings a lot of humanity to the situation. Having once
been able to speak with Saylor over e-mail about the book, he says it was a
very difficult book to write and that is why the following book he wrote
("The Venus Throw" for any interrested) was a more "light-hearted" mystery.

Avete Omnes!

I have limited e-access right now. My hard-drive crashed big-time! (2.5
gigs gone!) Luckily my old 400 meg drive still works, but I am in process
of reconstructing things (Win3.1 works ok, but Win95 is still elusive).

I caught the warning of the potential virus before I opened that file.
Callidus, thanks for the e-mail version of your proposal.

I shall be back on-line more fully in a few days, I got a new 6.4 gig drive
to install.

As far as the cross-fertilization of day names are concerned, probably a lot
of adoption by Germanic-Nordic countries of "southern" ideas as time went
by. The only old Norse day name I have run across is Laugersdaeg (Bath or
Wash Day) which lined up with the current Saturday (which some think is
named after a Germanic nature/agricultural goddess: Saeter). Hence the old
custom of Saturday as bath day???

Labeling ourselves: I am by faith a retro-heathen and in thought I am
philosophically a polytheist. The religious manifestation of my Faith and
Philosophy is termed Asatru by some. I sometimes also answer Minn Tru or my
faith. Polytheist, pagan, heathen, all, or none. Makes no difference to
me. I am child and friend to my Holy Ones. That's eneough for me.

RIGHT?! >>

That's not the way I remember it....

If I recall, Hyacinthus was a beautiful young man with whom Apollo was in
love. Boreaus, the North Wind (or is it the West Wind), was also taken by
his fancy. But it wasn't Ares.

Anyway, one day when Apollo and Hyacinthus were playing discuss, Boreaus - in
jealousy - caused the wind to send the discuss smashing into Hyacinthus'
head. His wound was so extensive that even Apollo's healing power could not
heal him back to health. Apollo then turned him into a flower to preserve
his beauty.

Anyone else care to add to the story? I may be missing some details here and
there.

I'm no expert either, but the handle is the name that you will use in the
chatroom. I use the handle GaiusMarius, and so, if I type "Salvete", others
in the taverna read

GaiusMarius: Salvete

To get into the chatroom, you need to enter a handle, that is, a name that
identifies you and only you, LCaeciliusMetellus, LCMScaevola or some other,
and a password.

I hope I see you in there sometime.

So much for my experiment in using the Roman calendar. I meant April 12 (II
id April) & 19 (XIII Kal Mai), next Monday or the Monday thereafter.

May is hard for me because I am expecting my daughter to be born sometime
during the first half of the month. Maybe I should skip being present at
the birth if it means a chance to meet our highly esteemed Augur :)? That
would work out all right as long as I change my legal name and move far away
within a couple of days....

Anyway, between my overly long commute and the approaching birth, I cannot
be too committed to any plans right now. Please, pick a day that is
suitable for all of you, and I'll try to make it.

Personally I think that having Roman names is a plus. I don't think
people should make outrageous claims of kinship to the ancients, but
since we are trying to reclaim Roman culture, I believe it should
include the names and gens. We don't necessarily have to have 100%
Roman Latin names, we can do as the Britons and others assimilated
into the culture did and adapt names if we wish.

My friend, a "handle" is a code word by which you will be known outside
your real name to enter the chat-room. Let's say if you are a sailor,
your handle might be Boat, Oars, Ship, or Captain. If you are a
politicain your handle might be politics, voting or magistrate. You
will be asked to type it into the admission block and then type it again
to register it. It then becomes your pass-word to enter Chat-room.
Your should write the "handle" down somewhere (in your address book) so
you will have access to it at all times.

Salve,

It was my intention to attend the entire weekend of the Celebrate
History. Unfortuantley I will be unable to attend. As some of you know
about 3 weeks ago, my mother was in the Hospital due to Complications of
Diabetes. Last nite she has been readmitted, for the same reasons, and
is expected to have surgery sometime this weekend. Unfortunately her
condition is very serious, and I am going to be there as much as
possible. This also will explain my absence from the Taverna in the
past 2 months. I wanted to attend, and my sister was going to attend
with me. However, my sister and I will remain at home taking care of
our grandmother. I do apologize for not being in attendance, I was
really looking forward to the Convention and meeting Ericius, Gangalius
and others. Perhaps after Nocta arrives we will have to plan a trip up
north.
