Its easy Fabius, they are the government. As long as they dont violate the
Supremacy Clause of the Constitiution of the US. They can bascially do what
they want...as power is granted from the 10th amendment. Or if they dont
violate a Supreme Court Ruling

Salvete Qvirites,

I have read with interest your notes and would like to share my point of
view to some questions:
- I like the idea of raffles, but what about auctions of books or any
things connected with Roman history for example real roman artefacts -
and the benefit will pass to NR treasure.
- If some of you consider about any meeting place or center (this is the
right word for you are talking about) out of the US or West Europe, the
main requirement (by my humble opinion) is to have nearby an US military
base - it can, but not necessary asure security of the "capital".
I reply, because have heard something about Africa or Albania.
- It would be better for europeans to have this center on the eastern US
coast, but here I would like to share you my opinion that Africa and
especcialy Northern Africa is forevere lost for NR. I would not be very
surprized if one day we will have some citizens in SAR, but northern
Africa -never.
Some of you are very critical to Christianity but here is the
place to note that it is the only space where NR could expand. Islam
culture for example is very far away from the Roman world and its
philosophy. On the other side Eastern Asia has its own cultural
traditions at least so strong as Europeans.
- Have you ever consider of reestablishment of some indian tribes? As a
small boys we have played once as Roman and Cartaginians (the good were
Romans) another time as cowboys and Indians (the last ones were good).
In NR I see the chance to combine these two games moreover many of you
are Americans. It would be a honour for me to enter into Nova Comanches
tribe, for example. I know few indian words as "vigvam, how, Manitu "
and I hope at the beginning it would be enough.
I love Carl May books.

If ever we put some sort of an auction together might I suggest the
following--
years ago I recall a charity auction in which each person bid on an
item. The high bidder of course came home with the item in question
however whatever anyone bid win or not - that was the amount paid
anyway. Placed that way here one day on this very list it could add to
some interesting competition and a fun way of raising funds for N.R.

If that was done every couple of months with a few items at a time
it could work out alright. Anyone else like the idea?

Salve Ericie! Khaire Pythia te (sorry, have forgotten how to decline
Greek vocatives)...

My point is, that Athena (aka Sul, aka Minerva) can have whatever colour
hair she likes. She's the Boss's daughter, after all. Plato called poets
liars, but I think they sometimes perceive divinity in an uniquely
privileged way. The Classical poets, though, especially Homer and
Hesiod, have too long been regarded as infallible sources on divine
attributes and characteristics, largely in more recent times by
academics whose interest is purely scholarly rather than devotional.
What I'd argue for is a more empirical approach (which also explains how
I know She has red hair). I'd also contend that an attribute or a
function or a characteristic are not the same as an epithet.

Vale Khaire Kale te,

Nicolaus Moravius Vado.

From: "D. Iunius Palladius" amcgrath@--------
Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 12:47:00 -0500 (EST)

Salvete Cives! I am pleased to announce that the Senate has voted to
approve the Sodalis pro Coquerer et Coquus, formed by Piperbarbus Ullerius
Venator, Quaestor of Nova Roma. Below is a brief description of the
group and an introductory note by him. I hope you will join me in
welcoming this new group, dedicating to filling the Roman
stomach--authentically if possible! :)

In service to Rome,

Decius Iunius Palladius, Consul

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Salve Omnes!

I am Piperbarbus Ullerius Venator, Cives Romana, Quaestor and now,
Dominus Sodalis pro Coqueror et Coquus.

I am gladdened by this further opportunity to be of service in the
Re-Awakening of the Genius of Roma Antiqua. I should just like to quote
the Statement of Purpose from the Magna Charta ex Sodalis:

The Sodalis Pro Coqueror et Coquus (Sodalis hereafter) shall be devoted to
the research into and preparation & enjoyment of, the Beverages, Foods and
Dining Methods of Roma Antiqua, those of the Cultures with which She came
into contact, those of Nova Roma and the Host Cultures of Nova Roma's
Cives. The main emphasis of all efforts will be Roma Antiqua, with an eye
to the future of Nova Roma. The Sodalis shall provide a forum for
improved communication and exchange of information between the Brewers and
Cooks of Nova Roma, and to the benefit of the general population. The
Sodalis shall also strive to act as a training ground for Civies
considering service as Curule Aediles. The Sodalis shall strive to help
the members to improve in their skills of research, preparation and
presentation, thereby helping all Romans to increase their enjoyment of
Drink, Food, Feasting and Celebration.

As founding Dominus, I shall fill all offices until we can get fully
organized. My main methods of communication will continue to be the List,
the Eagle (SUBSCRIBE Y'ALL!), the Message Board and private e-mail.
Eventually we hope to have (under our charter) a newletter to be called
"Fabulae Mensa" - Table Tales.

If you are interested (and within "Brewers" I do include those who make
Ale--------ead--------d Wine), e-mail me at: <a href="/po--------ovaroma?protectID=243232178182078116015232190036129" >amgunn@--------</a>. I'll -------- a

In Cervisia Felicitas, In Bona Ciba Aequus Animus!

In Amicus et Fidelis - Venator

Salvete Omnes, Bona Fortuna!

I am delighted to acknowledge the action of the Senate as announced by the
esteemed Consul Palladius. For the next little while, I shall address Sodalis
mail on Thursdays. The subject line will always start "SC&C #X:".

Again I say, if you are interested, either in joining or seeing our founding
document, e-mail me and I'll send the text file as I receive the requests.

I hope to be able to give more attention to the Sodalis after I complete the
Mead Manual and a coupl of similar projects already in the works.

I thank the Senate for their trust and confidence. Roma Resurgans!

Valete - Venator Dominus Sodalis Coq. et Coq.

I like the idea! Maybe every two months? We could run pics of the items in The Eagle, too.

Or the whole auction could take place on the Website, but this entails a lot of work for an already overworked
Webmistress. Unless someone volunteers to be Curator of the auction site.

Also, if we get bids from outside our membership, do we have to collect/pay state sales taxes, get permits, etc.?

Salve, Honored Censores;

I take this opportunity to humbly address you in amatter of some
concern. In working toward the creation of a Comitia Populi, the Senior
Magistrates are at present confounded by the absence of a complete
roster of citizens from which the Tribes and Centurie lists may be
developed and thus the Comptia Populi created for the consideration of
legislation to be proposed by the Consuls.

I find much to my embarassment that even though I am an elected officer,
my name does not appear on the Citizen's List surrently held by Consul
Cincinnatus. I appeal to you to provide an up-to-date listing of
citizens to the Consuls as soon as possible, or if that is not possible
rovide a date by which this important and needful information can be
provided. I offer my poor assistance, such as it is, in the job of
compilig or transmitting the required information.

I thank you most humbly for your most kind attention to this message.

I do apologize for disturbing you but I would like to inquire in regard

Congratulations, My Firiend, on the authorization of your Sodalitas.
You may count me as one of your first members. Just tell me what you
wish me to do. I am interested in all aspects of your Society (wine,
ale, mead and food) so I feel very comfortable here.

You will by now have read my message to the list regarding the Citizen
List. I wonder if you would be so kind as to write a message to the
Censores in similar language urging the forwarding of this list to
Consul Cincinnatus and asking at least three other NR friends to do the
same. Consul Cincinnatus hopes that perhaps a groundswell of
dissatisfaction will shake this information loose, and I am not sure how
else to get it started.

Agai my congratulations for your Sodalitas, and I hope that we shall
have the opportunity to hist a glass of something together, before too
many more moons have passed.

quiter than Terri..According to Crys. So here are the vital statistics:

Lapis was born at 10:09 am, he is 6 lbs 12 oz. He is 18 1/2 inches
long. His APGARS Scores were 8 and 10.

She thanks everyone for their prayers and well wishes. She has already
walked this afternoon. and is doing quite well.

Well thats the most recent update. If you want to call her please

About sales tax and permits. Sales tax only applies if someone
buys the item in question in the same state they reside or if they were
to pick up the item in person in whatever state.
Permits- well yes come to think of it for our purposes if we have an
auction or are just selling some sort of goods directly through Nova
Roma we're going to need a fed id number and a state sellers permit-
maybe a locality sellers permit in certain places. If let's say several
people from Nova Roma went somewhere - a convention, festival, etc to
sell goods then we would probably need a mobile sellers permit. All
state laws vary and certain municipalities might require other types of
licenses or permits. A fed id number is free, and like in WI the sellers
permit is about $20.00. Really easy to do an should be basically the
same anywhere.

Glad to see everyone thinking about funds and getting excited
about different ideas. Implementing these things are definitely in the
realm of being a senator though- not much will happen without a senatus
consulta who will make the decisions as to what will actually be done
and then start appointing duties to other magistrates. All in good time
I guess.

When exactly are we going to be officially registered as a
nonprofit organization?
